We pride ourselves on trying to find extreme values here at winestore., but this one is potentially in a league all its own.

If you love Pinot Noir, I am here to tell you this is a dead ringer for high end Burgundy, and is utterly delicious for only $12.99.

My wife is very into Pinot Noir right now, so I tested my theory out last night. I poured a glass for her, went up to say a final goodnight to the kids and came back downstairs.

Wife: "That is exactly what I'd like you to bring home. How much is it?"
Me: "$12.99"
Wife: "No, seriously"
Me: "It's crazy, I know. But it's $12.99"
Wife: ***silence as her entire world shifts off its axis***

Funny thing here? This isn't Pinot Noir at all. It's Grenache... (this is where I would insert a funny emoji but I can't figure out how to do it)

Le Paria hails from the Cabardés region inside Languedoc, and a little town called Ventenac, in the rolling foothills of the Pyrenees. For France, this is warm climate viticulture though it is not so different from the southern Rhone Valley climatically speaking. In general, the Languedoc doesn't cool off in the same manner as the Rhone but Grenache is happily at home in such a sunny place. And the family is invested not only in their historical sites and vines on the side of Montagne Noire but also in sustainable viticulture (they’re members of Terra Vitis - link HERE). The vineyard is free of chemical inputs and the wine has no added sulfites; it’s aged only in traditional concrete tanks.

Every year we try and pick a "Wine of the Year" and a "Runner Up" based on which wines had not only the largest impact on our business, but also seemed to have the biggest impact with customers.

If there were ever two wines that absolutely rocked our world in 2020, these are the two (and it's not like anyone really needed any rocking in 2020).

"Mountain-grown, it’s the richest kind,” as coffee commercials used to say, but it’s also true of Cabernet. Highland Falls mountain grown goodness catapulted it to our #1 selling wine since its release in July of this year...and it's not exactly close for 2nd place. It has a commanding 3,528 bottle lead through yesterday.

Foley Family's pedigree doesn’t hurt either: the guys who bring you Merus, Kuleto, Chalone and Chalk Hill Wines are behind the powerhouse Highland Falls lineup too. 

At $9.99 per bottle on sale, I sometimes think I may take for granted that quality of this level, at this price point, even exists....and that statement rings true for our runner up at $10.99 as well.

I've always loved Albariño, and Clos Delfines has become a benchmark for the brand - but never in a million years did I think it would take off as it has in 2020. This is also the first time ever a white wine has made it into the Top 2!

Sales of this crisp white with hints of green apple, pear and peach rocketed a stunning 3,920% this year (and no we did not sell just 1 bottle last year :)

I think though that our biggest takeaway from the success of these two wines is that there are still some stunning wines being made at the $10-$12 price point...and it's happening all over the globe. We've just got to keep hunting them down and bringing them your way.

Clearly you all love these two as much as we do - so the sale on these gems extends through Sunday!

Gascony ain't just the Three Musketeers, though they have a place in our hearts as well. More than anything, Gascony is foie gras, delicious plums and apricots, rich dinners with Armagnac to follow. But the white grapes grown here are not just for great brandy, they have always been consumed as wine too and the last decade or so has seen an embrace of clean, cold winemaking to preserve the aromas of otherwise neutral grapes like Ugni Blanc or Folle Blanche. It's also seen new plantings of Sauvignon Blanc, a grape that requires no heroic measures to reveal its aromatic riches. Whats fun here is that these same winemaking methods generate something bright and vibrant but without much resemblance to other such Sauvignon Blancs (I'm looking at you, New Zealand), many of which have begun to seem like self-caricature. I drink A LOT of Rhone wine (is that a bad thing?). I love Chateauneuf du Pape, Cotes du Rhone, Cornas, Gigondas, Hermitage...I love it all. So when a wine like this comes along that tastes as it does, and only costs $12.99, I get super fired up. This could easily pass for a $50 Chateuneuf du Pape. It's that good.

So what's the up with the wine?

You may start by asking, why is this place called God’s Plain? Isn’t that a bit presumptuous?

Well, the tale is told that the name harks back to the Middle Ages, when walking across this wide, bandit-infested forest and scrubland was like committing your fate to God. But now it’s mostly vines on red clay and alluvial pebbles and cobbles. Nothing but red wine here, from the usual suspects of Grenache (mostly), Syrah and Mourvèdre. But like its neighboring Côtes du Rhone Villages, Plan de Dieu’s reds are made more complex by the regional garrigue, the aromatic, Mediterranean flora, particularly bay, thyme, and lavender.

While some New-Worlders just can’t wrap their heads around the idea that the nearby plants might add something to the wine, it seems pretty basic. If you can stand in the vineyard and smell those other plants, then some of those aromatic molecules are in the air, on the grapes and end up in the wine. It helps to have skilled and experienced winemakers too - The Chamfort family is a fourth-generation winery, with about 100 acres of vines in Sablet, Rasteau and Vacqueyras, as well as Plan de Dieu, where the bottles are embossed with the AOP’s insignia of grapes with a halo over them. Hmm. Maybe greater historical accuracy would have meant a bandit’s mask and a knife sticking out of the cluster, but they didn't ask us for our opinion on this one.

Only 168 cases came into the US this fall - and you have access to every one of them :)

Les Bassets in one short year has become
our best selling white Burgundy - and for good reason. In a world where
white wine from France is subject to 25% tariffs, value like this is
extremely tough to find.

On the flip side of that coin, Burgundy is like a vast field of
mushrooms: potential beauties are popping up overnight, seemingly out of
 nowhere, and they may be tasty or they may be just terrible; only the
experts know for sure. And maybe the word "expert" is too precious a
term; it’s more like the people who have wandered about and scavenged
the hills for years and know where the good stuff hides. Cary Potet is
an ideal example of hidden Burgundy; the label disappeared after being
imported by a small producer for decades. Retirement of the
owner/vintner was the simple explanation. Fast forward to today and the
wine is currently being made by a new family who similarly loved the
estate (particularly the Montagny we are offering today), its little
castle, and the wines it created. These folks, the Desfontaine family,
have been making wine for 12 generations at their own nearby estate in
the Cotes Chalonnaise. The family motto is ‘Ex Nihilo Nihil’: nothing
comes from nothing. But from hard work, delicious wine can be coaxed
from the old stones.

The concentration and fullness of their wines reach a level that exist
in only a handful of Montagny producers, none of which are producing
wines at this level of value.

Pat Kuleto was one of San Francisco’s preeminent restaurateurs when he bought almost 800 acres in eastern Napa Valley (not a bad investment). Over the years, they established vineyard sites and started a winery that has since been gobbled up by the Foley empire, but that’s not a bad thing.

With wineries across the globe including Merus, Banshee, Chalk Hill, Roth, Lancaster, Chalone, Lincourt and EOS in California; Lucien Albrecht in France; and Dashwood, Mt. Difficulty and Grove Mill in New Zealand, Bill Foley has shown real zeal and smarts in his acquisitions. Foley’s wineries always provide first rate value and the Native Son bottling is definitely intended to over-deliver, offering more than the sum of its parts. Its parts? 27% Zinfandel, 22% Malbec, 20% Petite Sirah, 20% Merlot, 11% Tempranillo.

Gascony ain't just the Three Musketeers, though they have a place in our hearts as well. More than anything, Gascony is foie gras, delicious plums and apricots, rich dinners with Armagnac to follow. But the white grapes grown here are not just for great brandy, they have always been consumed as wine too and the last decade or so has seen an embrace of clean, cold winemaking to preserve the aromas of otherwise neutral grapes like Ugni Blanc or Folle Blanche. Among the diverse operations the Vellas family manages on their estates in Languedoc and Roussillon is an equestrian center and a “Manades” or farm where they breed Camargue bulls, bred solely for the "course camarguaise" (Camargue style of bullfighting). It’s not the bloody affair that we associate with bullfighting (at least, that’s the goal). We have been chomping at the bit to be able to release this deal to you guys - we just had to wait for the product to arrive.

This may go down as one of the top deals of 2020 - and that is saying something.

Let’s just state from the outset that simply because Cambria is a big and successful winery, owned by a bigger and successful winery (Jackson Family) doesn't mean that their wines aren’t interesting. How do I know that? Because Chateau Latour is a big and successful winery (more than 30,000 cases per year, by some accounts) and nobody seems to complain about that. And they too are owned by a bigger and successful company, Groupe Artemis, who also own restaurants, publishing houses, clothing companies and Christie’s, for starters.

So, can we dispense with the attitude that merely because Cambria sells a lot of Pinot Noir, it must not be very good. Think about that for a second. If they sell a lot of wine, they MUST be good, right? They have this new clonal project and it includes Clone 4 (most people call it Pommard) which they planted back in 1970. If I was making Pinot Noir and I had to pick a single clone to rely upon, it would be Pommard. It produces Pinot Noir that is deep, delicious and keeps you coming back for more.

When third generation vintner José Maria Vicente took over Casa Castillo it was mostly a rosemary plantation. Now it’s arguably the best winery in Spain’s burgeoning Jumilla region, where many heralded wines are coaxed out of old Garnacha and Monastrell

The #1 breakout wine for us in the last 12 months has been Escorlada. I'm not sure any wine in recent years has put together such a great package, flavor, and price point.

So naturally we want to celebrate when the new vintage arrives, and we are doing so by putting it on sale the rest of this week!

What makes the wine so special?

Bodegas Lo Nuevo is crucial to the modern success of Spanish wine, especially wines from the Levante, the Africa-facing south. Here the Almansa region grows Garnacha, among other traditional Spanish red
grapes, but unlike the oxidized, alcoholic wines of yore, the new wines are bright and sunny with all the original fruits from the grape preserved. Lo Nuevo has few peers in this grand evolution from the
ancient and occasionally noble to something populist, fruity and modern. But they would be the first to insist that their success is conditioned upon old vines grown at high altitudes. Here the Garnacha is at nearly
3500 feet, where the otherwise relentlessly warm temperatures see nighttime cooling into the 40s.

These old garnacha vines produce BIG and RICH red wines that don't require the same price points as some of the California peers because, quite frankly, the costs to make them in Almansa are simply not as big
as they are in Napa.

So you're getting top quality stuff for very affordable prices. That may explain why the bottles essentially walk themselves right out the door :)

So I know what I'm drinking tonight - you may want to grab one too!

A couple of times this year we have gotten those "once in a" type deals as wineries continue to try and move product that was normally sold to restaurant channels.

This is one of those deals.

All across the California wine industry, Napa particularly, has been a place that attracted those wanting to fulfill their winemaking dreams and even if the businesses last a decade or two, they usually get bought up by someone else with more understanding and skills in the industry. Gus Anderson was one of the few who actually put in the hard work; sure, he was an orthodontist who decided to be one of those “hobbyists” but
Gus truly worked to understand and succeed in the business. Most importantly, he and his wife (and his son Todd) planted some extremely good vineyards and those vines are still chugging along and producing
great stuff, even if Gus is no longer with us (he passed away a few years ago). The winery to this day is still with the family, and those vineyards, and their decades of know how, are producing some absolutely
awesome wine.



So while inexpensive it is not, if you want a ridiculous deal on a Napa Valley icon to help get you through until
the election :) , you may want to grab a few bottles. I know I am!

We are always, and I mean ALWAYS, on the lookout for delicious wine that costs less than $10...because let's be honest, there is a lot of not so delicious wine out there for less than $10.

No matter where it comes from, wine is somebody’s passion. Whether it’s the product of a tiny garagista, or a brand residing in the portfolio of an obsessive importer. In truth, most of the international wines that have achieved great fame are only in the U.S. because some crazy importer (I’m looking at you, Eric Solomon) decided they just had to show it to wine lovers.
 
Convinced that American enthusiasts haven’t yet understood the potential of Argentine wine, here we have two guys in the Midwest that started this import company back in 2010 and they were smart. They focused on grapes they knew they could bring to market at a winning price (hello $9.99!), or at least draw people’s attention – it didn't hurt that they partnered with good wineries. They also jumped on strange and unusual varieties from Italy; they played around in a good way.
 
This Malbec is from Argentina, of course, because if you were trying to bring really good Malbec to the US at the best price, well, you wouldn’t go to California. And Malbec is two things: so friendly that it positively gushes with enthusiasm, and rather demanding in that it wants you to put some damned meat on the grill. Right now.

So get some Hamburgers, get some Malbec and let's party like its 1999 :) - or really party like it is any year other than 2020.
