As we've told you before, maybe THE wines that got us into drinking lots of Spanish wine was Alto Moncayo. Unlike anything we had tasted from the country, they really blazed a trail for modern, full throttle winemaking in Spain. Their Veraton bottling also happens to be one of longest running "hit" wine - selling out again and again, year after year, in record time.

Alto Moncayo was born from the mind of Spanish importing wizard Jorge Ordonez and Spanish wine powerhouse Bodegas Borsao. The Garnacha vineyards, nestled high up in the Moncayo mountains (we've been there and the trek was a little on the scary side) produce some of the most powerful and robust wines we've tasted. Throw in Australian winemaking wizard Chris Ringland (think Clio, El Nido etc) and you've got some serious wine on your hands!

The wine has been rated among the top 1% of all wines in the world by Vivino, was our 2019 Wine of the Year and is an all around ridiculous value at $14.99 per bottle.

What's the background?

Bodegas Lo Nuevo is crucial to the modern success of Spanish wine, especially wines from the Levante, the Africa-facing south. Here the Almansa region grows Garnacha, among other traditional Spanish red grapes, but unlike the oxidized, alcoholic wines of yore, the new wines are bright and sunny with all the original fruits from the grape preserved. Lo Nuevo has few peers in this grand evolution from the ancient and occasionally noble to something populist, fruity and modern. But they would be the first to insist that their success is conditioned upon old vines grown at high altitudes. Here the Garnacha is at nearly 3500 feet, where the otherwise relentlessly warm temperatures see nighttime cooling into the 40s.

These old Garnacha vines produce BIG and RICH red wines that don't require the same price points as some of the California peers because, quite frankly, the costs to make them in Almansa are simply not as big as they are in Napa.

So here we go, for six days only, maybe my favorite wine in the store for what is an absolutely silly price.

Maybe one of my favorite finds over the last 12 months has been the 2017 Copain "Les Voisins" Syrah.

I would love to blind taste anyone on this wine and ask them what they think it is. Some people don't drink Syrah, or say they only like Cab or Pinot etc. But I think anyone who tasted this completely blind, not knowing a thing about it, would really fall in love with it.

Why? Because it’s clean and redolent with fresh, well-preserved fruits of red and black cherries, along with the spices of new barrels (cinnamon, pepper, allspice and toast).

So if this is all so awesome, why am I a little sad? Well, our deal on this wine has run its course (at least until we can make the winery change their mind) and we have just 350 bottles left (thats less than 4 cases per store!).

If you're looking to step a little outside of your normal routine and find some greatness in some wine, I would look no further than Les Voisins...just don't fall too hard for it!

The Luce Estate in Montalcino I think may be one of the most beautiful places on earth. While I don't like to judge a book by its cover, typically operators that spend this much money in the vineyard and on their facilities churn out quality product.

So it should be no surprise that the flagship wine from this estate, Luce, rests easy in a world of 99 and 100 point scores and $135 price tags. That said, not all of their wine costs and arm and a leg, and the quality doesn't suffer.

Lucente is the second wine to Luce and is absurdly delicious at a very reasonable price. This also happens to be the lowest price we have ever been able to offer Lucente...and I'm not quite sure how long that is going to last (you know, inflation 😭). Centuries ago the DO of Almansa produced high quality wines, albeit at that time they were sweet ones. The locals used Alicante Bouschet, but today they call it Garnacha Tintorera, and for the most part all the producers have nixed the sweet part of the equation. In the case of Carmita, they mix the Garnacha with 30% Monastrell to make this wickedly powerful red wine.

It's easy drinking, big, rich and all around delicious.

Oh, did we mention that the winemaking team behind this gem are involved in some of the most celebrated wine projects in Spain? So the street cred, in addition to everything else, is off the charts.

So the votes from our blind tasting are in, and there was a clear winner - 2019 Willowlake Cabernet.

I have to say I'm not surprised.

We told you when this wine was released in August that this Cabernet was "the best 100% Cabernet under $50 we will offer you this year (other than Cape Charles)."

We also noted; "You are not going to find 100% Cabernet from Napa or Sonoma for $29.99 per bottle that is going to outdrink the quality of this - full stop."

I think you all may agree with us! Major shout out to 2nd place winner Cape Charles Cabernet and the 3rd place winner Caymus Cabernet!

What did we originally tell you about Willowlake?



From that table of insanity comes the best 100% Cabernet under $50 we will offer you this year (other than Cape Charles).

So yes - on that table was a sample from a lot of 6 barrels of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from a winery that while I can't tell you their name, I can tell you up until we bought the lot we had never heard of them. That sample was brought to us by Baron Ziegler (who I mentioned to you last week)
 
Clearly other people had heard of this estate though. Their winemaker is one of the most legendary female winemakers in California history. Their $150 Cabernets regularly receive insanely high scores (the 2019 Estate Cabernet - the same vintage as our juice - received 98 points from James Suckling). Their program apparently was so successful that they even started bottling some of their leftover juice themselves (vs. bulking it out) and were still charging $80 per bottle!!
 
This is dense, dark, tannic Cabernet for those of you that like the big stuff - but it is not over the top. First sip you can tell the quality of the fruit, and the craftsmanship.
 
With everything going on with the supply chain regarding dry goods, the massive shortage of wine, and all the inflationary pressures out there right now, I am able to tell you this; You are not going to find 100% Cabernet from Napa or Sonoma for $29.99 per bottle that is going to outdrink the quality of this - full stop.

So if you were waiting to see what all the fuss is about, now may be the time to check in 😁

The old saying about academia is that the battles are so fierce because the stakes are so small, and pointless arguments about which grape is the “greatest” are similarly stupid. There are tens of thousands of grapes and most people have had only a handful so what do we collectively know?

But now that I’ve raised the issue, shouldn't Chenin Blanc be in the discussion? It can be stunningly complex and long-lived as a dry wine, off-dry wine, sweet wine and even dessert wine. If that weren’t enough, the grape can also offer silky and complex sparkling wine. This has 20% Chardonnay to add to its richness, eighteen months on the lees, and more character than you can imagine unless you are already familiar with sparkling Chenin.

You'll find other Chenin Blanc aged in the caves of Saumur at prices like $38.00 (HERE) and $30.00 (HERE) - but we have found nothing even remotely close to this quality at $14.99. It's like a little celebration for your taste buds and your wallet, all at the same time 😁

It's been a minute since our last blind tasting (or any real themed tasting for that matter). Actually it's been about 1,313,280 minutes...but who's counting 😂

Prior to the pandemic, blind tastings had become something of a crowd favorite here at winestore., and why wouldn't they be!?! Blind tasting is just flat out fun!!

That is why we are beyond excited to let you know our blind tasting schedule is getting back in action, and we're starting with one of the all time favorites!

Caymus Cabernet is one of the hottest selling wines in any given year, but if we placed it in a lineup with less expensive offerings - could you pick it out? Would it still be your favorite? We're going to find out this weekend!

I mean, a Ducati is supposed to go faster than a bicycle, and a $75 wine is supposed to taste better than a $25 one. Right? Well, maybe not. A wine's success isn't measured in MpH, it's measured in the taste that is transferred from the glass to your mouth. If you don't know the price, can't see the label, and can't hear someone waxing poetic in your ear about the wine's "score," then all that is left is the juice and your taste buds. It's a scary proposition for any winemaker. That's why you have marketing departments that design catchy labels, create campaigns to build a wine's image, and spend all of their time and energy essentially trying to convince consumers that a wine is great. The problem is that you can't out "market" a blind tasting.

That red Chateauneuf du Pape dead ringer we told you about has a sister white wine...and it is every bit as stunning as its red counterpart.

A white blend of Vermentino and Clairette from the region called Saint Guilhem le Désert is something maybe you haven’t heard of - and that’s okay. But you might want to know that perhaps the most famous and most highly regarded wine in all of Languedoc-Roussillon, Mas de Daumas, is part of this area. Those wines? $40 and up.

What I find most interesting though is how a wine that is packaged this beautifully, that is this well made, from a small medieval town in the middle of almost nowhere south of France can show up half way across the planet on the shelf for only $14.99. It's tough to really comprehend...but lets not look a gift horse in the mouth!

2021 L'Azerolle Minervois Rouge

Much of southern European wine is ancient but Minervois carries its history loudly and proudly; local cave paintings and fossilized footprints confirm human activity here more than 8000 years ago. The town of Minerve, only 25 miles from the Mediterranean is named after the Greek goddess Minerva, and the vines here probably arrived with the Greeks in the 6th century BC.

The area prospered under the Roman Empire and its thirst for all such local wines, but in the last century or so the region’s reputation declined. Chateau Mirausse may have something to say about that...

Under the steady hand of Raymond Julien for the last 20 years, this estate has been churning out some extremely high quality red wine...at prices that are sure to please. Here, the two most important Rhone grapes, Syrah and Grenache, are given the stage along with the no less intense grape Cinsault, all drawn from 50-year-old vines.

Easy drinking and easy on the pocketbook. A combo I can always get behind!

I miss Bob Foley.

I used to see him a lot because I was obsessed with Pride Mountain Vineyards, producer of one of the world’s great Merlots. Bob started at Heitz Cellars, but more importantly spent 15 years as the founding winemaker for Markham Vineyards (more great Merlot). Then in 1992, Bob began another 15 years as the founding winemaker for Pride Mountain Vineyards. He also created the highly acclaimed Switchback Ridge, Hourglass, Paloma, and School House wines. Now he has his own eponymous winery on Howell Mountain, and I don't get there (too many other places to be) but there he makes Cabernets as well as various blends, like The Griffin, the Foley Family crest in Irish heraldry and a blend of the best in the red wine cellar: Merlot, Petite Sirah, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Charbono, Petit Verdot, and sometimes others.

Those of you that know The Griffin, love The Griffin, and the new 2017 vintage has finally arrived. We will also have it on the tasting machine at all 8 stores through the weekend so you can see what all the fuss is about!

If you're a Chianti fan like I am, this is a do not miss wine.

Castello Vicchiomaggio is a part of Tuscan history, even if that is a place that these days more often serves as a film backdrop or wedding venue than as the beating heart of a great wine estate. But they’ve always had the money to do really good wine, and indeed they have done that at times. It’s just that you have to stay on top of what they are doing if you want to get that really good wine. From the late 1990s a new family took over this nearly millennia old estate, and they want to be taken seriously – this wine is a good start; they would argue that they started moving towards excellence as soon as they took over. They may be right; nothing in wine is fixed: the great have their off vintages. The decent producers can suddenly do excellent wine. That’s our job: find them.
 
Agostino Petri Chianti Classico is Vicchiomaggio with a Riserva designation, Sangiovese with a dollop of Cabernet Sauvignon, again a single, great vineyard; this wine is aged in the used La Prima barrels, and then aged in larger format barrels for another half year or so. This is the Italian way and these both reflect that heritage. But they also reflect how much Italy has changed in the last twenty years and how modern and exciting the wines have become.

So.......full bodied Chianti Classico Riserva for less than $20 from an epic producer? Yes, please!

We hit the point last weekend where so many people had asked "Why can't Benières be part of the Labor Day sale?!?!?", that we just decided we had to go ahead and put it on sale this week.

Our #1 goal here is to give the people what they want - so here we go!



We told you back in December 2021 that for the 2nd year in a row Benières Pinot Noir and Chardonnay didn't win the voting here for our Wine of the Year, but maybe they should have. That we were not sure there is any brand we carry more on fire than Benieres - and that there is no brand bringing more thunder when it comes to the quality / price ratio than these wines right now.

The guy who wrote the review above about the Benières Pinot Noir clearly agrees 😂 My guess is he is buying a case at this price.

I'm not typically prone to hyperbole, but this honestly may be the best value white wine we've ever carried. At the sale price of $7.99, there honestly is no light, dry, crisp white that we know of that can come even close to touching it.

That's a good thing, because I need more value like this in my life. You know, like the kind where the quality of the product far exceeds the price. Too often lately I think we're being presented with sub optimal options at insane prices.

What's up with the wine?

We found the Vivarés brothers from Cotes de Thau – you’ve probably not heard of it but it’s the hilly coastal part of Languedoc in Mediterranean France. They live in Pézenas, which you should visit someday because it’s the charming birthplace of France’s greatest playwright, Molière. Robert Vivarés has a B&B with a fine restaurant and Paul travels the world for his business tasting a lot of wines. They needed a house wine that reflected the place where they grew up. So they blended Picpoul, Terret and Colombard from the hills around them and called it Bleu Blanc and its straight up a silly value.

California winemaking master Rob Fischer is no stranger to epic high end wine. His track record includes stints at Cuvaison, Beaulieu Vineyards, Etude, Lyric, and several others. The dude knows what he's doing.

But while he can churn out the expensive stuff, his passion is providing unbelievable value for the money. We've seen it in his value projects like Valravn (have you had their Pinot Noir?!?!?!?), Averaen, and Marine Layer.

With the Kingstree Chardonnay, I think you'll get what we are talking about. It is BIG, lush Chardonnay that competes on the table with some competition churning out wines at more than 2x the price. 70% of the Chardonnay fruit in this gem comes from the Russian River Valley,  and at $10.99 per bottle on sale, we think you're gonna agree this is some extreme value.
