So usually a couple of times a year we just need to send a simple reminder that yes, we have Meiomi Pinot Noir. Yes, it is $14.85. Yes, our commitment to low prices knows no bounds!

So we're just going to leave that price right up there for you, and make this the 2nd shortest newsletter of the year :)

"In spite of rock and tempest's roar, in spite of false lights on the shore, sail on, nor fear to breast the sea!"
- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

The quote above is from the 2019 Dry Creek Mariner front label, and while it has absolutely nothing to do with how delicious this wine is, we thought it was pretty awesome and thus decided to include it in this e-mail. If you want to geek out and read the whole poem like we did, you can find it here.

Anyhoo - back to the topic at hand - Dry Creek Mariner at the lowest price in the US! If still waters suggest depth, a wine of this balance and equanimity is proof that noise and intensity aren't required for richness. A blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, 11% Malbec and 8% Petit Verdot, this has length and character, but it’s not ever about the high alcohol intensity typical of California’s celebrated wines.

The wine pairs well with Wednesday evenings and people who like drinking awesome red wine :) You can also watch a pretty cool video about the wine by clicking HERE.

We recently told you about Belcoop Red. It's an absolute stunner of a wine, and at $9.99 it may end up being one of the top value wines we have uncovered in the last few years.

Well....it turns out they make a white wine as well, and it is every bit as delicious as the red!

What's going on here?

Grenache Blanc, a white mutation of Grenache Noir, is a work in progress but only because the consumer is still discovering it. Producers long ago realized its potential for crisp white wines that are so much more than merely crisp. With enough sunshine, Grenache Blanc can develop weight and power, not quite Chardonnay but no light white either. In truth, it’s not wholly a white wine in its density, befitting its kinship with the major grape of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The wine is fermented like Chardonnay in some ways, though the stainless steel variety; its lees are stirred in the tank, creating greater richness and texture, and Grenache Blanc is very happy that way.

You will be too, once you try this thing!

So let's end this month like we started it, shall we? Focusing on the thing that gets us most excited in the wine world - when inexpensive meets high quality! My taste buds and my wallet are equally happy!

Let's get to it!

Lillie's Collection is back!!!!

October 2021 was the last time we saw this wine and honestly we thought we would never see it again. It was (and still is) and project for BevMo in California from Langtry - but the winery called us back in November and asked if we would be interested in the wine again...as BevMo may have ordered more than they needed.

The answer was of course yes, as this absolutely stunning red blend was one of our best selling wines for the short time that we had it.

What makes this wine so awesome?

The wine business can be a weird place, and the story behind this wine is a prime example.

So there was a wine made by a Guenoc Winery and Langtry Winery partnership called "Lillie's Collection Victorian Claret" for a California wine powerhouse called BevMo.

Guenoc and Langtry decide to split up. Langtry owns the trademark to "Lillie's Collection". Guenoc owns the trademark to "Victorian Claret".

Potential problem? Indeed.

Langtry continues producing the wine for BevMo but has to put "Red Wine" on the label instead of "Victorian Claret". BevMo says that doesn't work - now they don't want the wine anymore. (notice how on Bevo's website it still says "Victorian Claret 👀)

...one thing leads to another and next thing you know we get to offer you this wine at an absolutely silly price. Like I said, the wine business is a weird place.

Langtry Farms was originally founded back in the 19th Century by entertainer Lillie Langtry, who purchased 4,200 acres in Northern California around 1888. Today, Langtry Estate makes up over 21,000 acres and is one of the largest continuous land holdings in all of California.

Their Petite Sirah, which makes up the base of this blend, is one of the best Petite values in the North Coast. Both powerful and well balanced, it's a prime example of what stunning values can come out of the North Coast when left at the hands of a master like winemaker Eric Stine.

So BevMo's loss is your gain - at least until it runs out again!

As always, THANK YOU for your business. We are humbled and honored to serve you day in and day out.

Happy Thursday!!

Austin Hope, makers of the eponymous Austin Hope line of wines, as well as Treana, Liberty School, Quest, and a few others, released a few years ago an "entry" level Cabernet that is downright insane for the money.

Austin Hope’s family started farming grapes and wine in Paso Robles more than 30 years ago. While they planted apples, they were quick to realize that grapes could prosper as well; few did in 1978. Cabernet Sauvignon, along with Zinfandel, has long been their lodestar, and the power of Paso Robles Cabernet is now a benchmark for California wine. It also doesn't hurt that one of Austin Hope's mentors was Chuck Wagner (of Caymus fame).

The Hope family used to sell grapes to Caymus, and many have opined that the Austin Hope line of wines are eerily similar to Caymus in style, at a fraction of the cost. We will let you all decide if they taste as good!

How about an offer today that is one of the best red wines under $15 we've tried in awhile, at the lowest online price in the US (heck, there are even people out there selling this wine for $40+ (here), in what may be the heaviest glass bottle of all time?

I'm in!

So what is the background on Maginifico?

Well, the wine business is a funny thing. Botter was founded in 1928 in a small town near Venice, selling local wines in barrels and demijohns. Today Botter is one of the largest producers and exporters of Italian wines, accounting for something close to 5% of the exports of all Italian wine bottles. They are clearly successful in the modern world, even when using old vineyards for Zinfandel, I mean, Primitivo (let’s use the original name).

Magnifico is sourced from ancient bush vines, handpicked, and then fermented in a modern manner, using a submerged cap system, with a 12-15 day maceration and controlled temperatures. That creates burly, powerful, Zinfandel (I mean, primitivo 😂) - and let's be honest, isn't that why we drink zin? The bigger the better!

I know what I'm drinking tonight! Happy Tuesday y'all!

We've got a good one for you today! Let's kick the weekend off right!

So winemaker Ted Henry back in 2021 was named head winemaker at Groth Vineyards (here). The man has an incredible track record in the valley. Winemaker at Clos du Val, Jarvis, Artesa just to name a few. He also started a pet project in Coombsville called Prime and as part of his deal with Groth he agreed to shut the winery down in November of 2022.

That means somebody needed to close out some wine - and given how much we already loved this project, we were there with open arms.

We are able to offer this wine to you today for only $34.99. Total Wine still has it for sale at the “Winery Direct” price of $77.99 (here)

Only hiccup is obviously this wine will not be made again, so this is a one time deal. 123 cases landed just two weeks ago - and we only have 160 bottles left.

I know what I'm drinking tonight!

TGIF!

Tyros Napa Cabernet - Lowest US Price!

You may recall the Silenus flagship wine we offered you a few months ago. It was a $50 bombshell full of fruit that used to make up the base component for Silver Oak.

Well, they also make an entry level Cabernet called Tyros - and it is absolutely delicious as well!

Silenus has quite the history in Napa. The estate used to be known as Newlan Vineyards. Bruce Newlan was a rocket scientist from San Jose who liked to vacation in Napa Valley, so he decided to start a winery (why not!). He chose this southern portion of Napa Valley because it enjoys a longer growing season, earlier bud break and optimal ripeness. But Newlan had to change hands in 2008 and so Silenus rose up, starting on a track that has culminated in being one of the first Napa Green properties (the sustainability program from Napa Valley Vintners) to develop a Carbon Farm Plan for the vineyards to become Carbon Neutral, regenerative farming that is the gold standard in sustainability and healthy farming. While other types of farming (organic or biodynamic) may be healthy for the grapes, they do not address the use of fossil fuels or the work required of vineyard workers. Owner and President Scott Meadows came aboard when it was Newlan but now he, his wife Yuko and his two daughters live, garden and create wine there.

Let's get to it, shall we?!?!?

2021 Préjugés Chardonnay

Release Price: $18.00
SALE Price: $12.99 (net)
SAVE 28%

Lowest Online Price in the US!

*Curbside Pickup Always Available*

In the Chardonnay sea of Sonoma Cutrer, Rombauer, Mer Soleil, Benieres, Sea Sun, Frank Family etc. hides one Chardonnay that outsells them all here at winestore. Its name is Préjugés, and it is one of those wines that kinda re-arranged my entire belief system in what value wine could taste like (in a good way, of course).

Préjugés is one of those wines that flies under the radar, but once you get it in your weekly rotation, it rarely leaves. The numbers are quite staggering, but would you believe that you all have made NC the #1 market for this wine on planet earth? 'Tis true. The wine is just silly good.

What makes Préjugés so awesome?

If you had told me that a French Chardonnay, from a little known producer, from a little known region (Cabardès), would become our top Chardonnay offering in 2019, 2020, 2021, and run third place in 2022 only because we could not keep it in stock with all the supply chain disruptions - without question I would have thought you were crazy.

California Chardonnay dominates the charts here at winestore., but Préjugés is something special, and took our sales by storm.

I mean, Cabardès has not always been a favored site for white wine, but its intense limestone soils are beginning to consistently offer Chardonnay of Burgundy-like nerve. This barrel aged white has qualities that both California and French Chardonnay lovers are going to go "ga ga" over, and it drinks better than some California Chardonnay and white burgundies at 4x the price (no joke).

I know what I'm drinking tonight!

The last time I saw a wine that achieved a 100% taste to purchase ratio off our tasting machines, the wine became our best seller for 3 years running.

Field Trip Cab Franc has achieved that ratio - but it can't become our best selling wine. Why not? Because there are only 122 cases made. You read that correctly. Only 122 cases of this wine exist.

Why such a small amount?

Well, super well known and expensive wineries always have extra juice left over - and that extra wine gets gobbled up and usually blended into other wines to make them better etc. etc. In this particular case, we worked out a deal where the Echolands Winery was willing to bottle this wine, produced from two crazy nice vineyards, in a one time bottling for you guys, our amazing customers!

What's up with the wine?

As Walla Walla Valley grows its reputation among the wine aficionados, it’s Cabernet Sauvignon that has led the way, with Syrah perhaps not too far behind. But ask any winemaker there and they will sing the praises of Cabernet Franc, that tertiary grape among the Bordeaux triad. It’s not so unimportant in Bordeaux though; many of the most famed of Right Bank Bordeaux (you know, chateaux like Cheval Blanc, Angélus, Dôme, Lafleur, those kinds of place) believe in the grape’s inherent greatness.

But not everybody has figured it out yet. Far too many Walla Walla winemakers insert a little of Cab Franc in each of their Bordeaux blends but rarely let it take center stage. This Cab Franc-forward version hails from two of the region’s most important vineyards, Blue Hills Vineyard and Seven Hills Vineyard, the AVA’s most prestigious vineyard. Aged only in French barrique for 14 months, it should offer a worthwhile introduction into the grape’s success in Walla Walla.

I know I'm in for 6. First come, first served. Let's get to it!

It's the final day T. Solomon Wellborn Pinot Noir will be on sale!

Can't read the whole e-mail? What will you miss?

Dan Kosta of Kosta Browne (here) owned Pinot Noir, 100% Single Vineyard from Campbell Ranch, for $24.99.

Ok so tell me more!

2nd Place by only a couple of votes in the Belle Glos blind tasting was 2020 T. Solomon Wellborn Campbell Ranch Vineyard Pinot Noir.

But today I am actually able to tell you where this juice came from, and it makes this final $24.99 sale all the more special....

You read that correctly - this is the final time this wine will be at $24.99, as this wine is running out.

Sooooooooo.......where did it come from?

Well, would you be interested in Pinot Noir from the people originally behind Kosta Browne at 65% off?

On August 23rd of last year, a winemaker we have worked with in CA for many years sent us the sample in the pictures below. He told us it was 100% Pinot Noir, but other than that we had no idea what these notations on the bottle meant.

So we tasted the wine. It was good. Like really, really, really, good. Like I actually ended up drinking the entire sample bottle good (not by myself of course 😂).

The winemaker of course went into this explanation of how he could not provide us with the source of the juice, he didn’t want to violate his NDA, etc. etc. etc. and then told us the price.

So it turns out that cryptic message on the bottle "2020-ALD-PNCB” stood for "2020 AldenAlli Pinot Noir Campbell Ranch”…no wonder it was so good.

If you are not familiar with AldenAlli it was a new Pinot Noir project from Dan Kosta of Kosta Browne fame. Dan Kosta and Michael Browne may be the most successful Pinot Noir entrepreneurs in the United States. They sold their “winery” in  fall of 2009 for a reported $40 million to Duckhorn. Keep in mind that Kosta Browne owned no vineyards and rented their winemaking space. Duckhorn was essentially buying a brand for $40 million in cash. Not a terrible exit for 10 years work.

The winemaker at AldenAlli is Shane Finley - winemaker at Kosta Browne for their incredible run during 2006-2012, which included the Wine Spectator Wine of the Year in 2011.

Fast forward to now and Dan Kosta and AldenAlli want to sell off a chunk of their 2020 Campbell Ranch juice. The release price on this single vineyard wine is $72.00 per bottle (if you can find it). I signed up for their mailing list and could not even buy it.

We are able to bring you this wine one last time for $24.99 per bottle.

While I have already opined on the quality of this wine multiple times, people are still finding out about it.

In the situation below, my friend and his wife only drink Pinot Noir. It is their thing. They know it well, they love it, drink a ton of it etc. etc.

This is the text message I get after he tried a bottle of this on a whim.

I meant to say "sub" instead of "sun", but he got the idea. Now T. Solomon is all they are drinking until the well runs dry. 😂

It's been a good run!!

First come, first served.

SALE runs through Midnight TONIGHT!

Top 3 Wines:
1. Willowlake Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
2. T. Solomon Wellborn Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
3. TIE Boulee Cordot & Belle Glos Pinot Noir

We have a winner - and today marks the final day of the sale price for said winner!!

I took some internal bets before the tasting this weekend and not one person thought Willowlake Pinot was going to be the winner.

And it didn't just win...it blew away the competition. 2019 Willowlake Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir took home over 22% of ALL the first place votes in an 8 wine competition.

We just had this wine on sale right before Christmas, but with a victory like this we have no choice but to celebrate this wine again!!

I guess we really should not be surprised, right? I mean this wine has won this event three other times, and the quality level continues to be completely off the charts.

What is the background on this hidden gem?

Wine wizards Baron Ziegler and Rob Fischer have been crafting this Pinot Noir since 2014 (when Vivino labeled it in the top 5% of all wines in the world) and it has become harder and harder to get each and every year (it was out of stock last year from January until September!).

Since its launch it has been our #1 selling Pinot Noir in terms of gross dollar volume and it is a FOUR time "Belle Glos Blind Tasting" winner (also it has never come in worse than second) and for my money, one of the best under $50 Pinot Noirs on the market today.

Happy Sunday y'all!

I love this wine.

I went back and looked, and I still have 6 bottles of the first vintage I ever bought (pic attached). According to Cellartracker, I paid wholesale $43.26 per bottle for that case of wine nearly 15 years ago .

So imagine my excitement when we were able to cut an end of year deal for the 2019 Il Carbonaione, allowing us to bring them to you for $44.99 per bottle. Obviously I’m in for a case 😁

What's the big deal?

The highly-regarded Carbonaione vineyard is small, about 13 acres of stony, sandy silty loam at about 1500 feet elevation up above the little town of Greve in Chianti, facing west-southwest. It was planted back in 1928, so there are vines of more than 90 years of age, and that on its own is enough. But this is one of the few sites in Chianti planted solely to Sangiovese di Lamole, a clone that may be (researchers are still trying to sort it out) one of the older clones of the grape, and which falls under the Sangiovese Grosso heading (also known as Brunello di Montalcino). The vineyard plot “Il Carbonaione” is so named because the owners found evidence indicating a charcoal pit (in Italian ‘carbone’) located there.

The winemaking is straightforward, with a nod towards Chianti’s traditions – both stainless steel tanks and cement vats are used. The same with the barrels: no barriques but larger 350L barrels. The nod towards modernism lies in the use of 90% French and 10% American oak, rather than some Italian chestnut or such. Though the family’s ownership of the vineyard and this bottling date only back to 1992, the wine has already proven quite capable of long aging. You can drink it now with virtually anything rich and flavorful, as powerful as it is, but something silkier and more seductive awaits in a decade or more (if you can wait that long :)

We hope you enjoy it as much as we do! We'll have it up on the machine at all eight stores all weekend long!

It tied Belle Glos...and it is $9.99!

Top 3 Wines from Belle Glos Blind Tasting:
1. Willowlake Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir (On Sale)
2. T. Solomon Wellborn Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir (On Sale)
3. TIE Boulee Cordot & Belle Glos Pinot Noir

One of the breakout stars at winestore. over the lasst 12 months has been Boulée-Cordot...and it has developed an insane following with very little fanfare (until now).

We put the wine in the tasting last weekend  just for fun as a ringer (and we know what kind of value it truly represents) - and at $9.99 per bottle the wine tied for third place with Belle Glos Balade - with each of the wines gathering 14.38% of the first place votes.

When we originally stumbled upon this wine, we got a little more than excited. We're always looking for great value wines, but finding wine that tastes great for less than $9.99 is kinda like finding an old school restaurant that still serves amazing cheeseburgers for $3.00 and $5.00 with a milkshake and fries - they are out there, but you got to do some digging.

As France evolves into the modern world, there are times when it seems that they’ve merely arrived in the late 20th century. Blends like this one wouldn't have been seen only a few scant years ago. Instead, the wine would have been named after the place where it originated; perhaps the grapes would have been listed on the back label if they were noted at all. But somebody in France got the memo – the modern world wants more information, and the old place names, unless they’re the famous ones, don't mean much.

So basically even if we had seen this blend, we wouldn't have known we were drinking it, even if we were :) Syrah is planted throughout Mediterranean France, and has a strong reputation dating back to the mid-19th century when Bordeaux chateaux would blend a small amount into their wines to improve them. Alicante? It’s one of the rare Teinturier grapes, having red juice as well as red skins and in the right spots it can be powerful and juicy, not just inky. Together they make for a very modern, fascinating, if nontraditional, wine.

So if you're looking for some value to add to your weekly wine lineup - this is a cannot miss!

Solomon Wellborn Campbell Ranch Vinyeard Pinot Noir.

Top 3 Wines:

2. T. Solomon Wellborn Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
3. TIE Boulee Cordot & Belle Glos Pinot Noir

We have a winner!!!

I know what I'm drinking tonight!

Willowlake Sonoma Cabernet is one for the record books - and the only thing that could stop this juggernaut is running out of wine... 👀

Well, I’m shedding a few tears here, because that is now happening. I guess all good things do come to an end? The wine will probably run out within a few weeks. We are desperately working with Baron Ziegler (who brought us the wine) to find a new run of such fantastic wine...but right now there is nothing in the pipeline.

I grabbed another 6 bottles a few days ago. I really have enjoyed this wine over the last several months (and I went through my fair share over the Holidays) 😂

So you've been notified! My guess is today is gonna be a little something like THIS.....

What is the deal with this wine?

This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is from a winery that while I can't tell you their name, I can tell you up until we bought the lot we had never heard of them. That sample was brought to us by Baron Ziegler (who brings us the most insane wines - you can read more about him here)

Clearly other people had heard of this estate though. Their winemaker is one of the most legendary female winemakers in California history. Their $150 Cabernets regularly receive insanely high scores (the 2019 Estate Cabernet - the same vintage as our juice - received 98 points from James Suckling). Their program apparently was so successful that they even started bottling some of their leftover juice themselves (vs. bulking it out) and were still charging $80 per bottle!!

This is dense, dark, tannic Cabernet for those of you that like the big stuff - but it is not over the top. First sip you can tell the quality of the fruit, and the craftsmanship.

With everything going on with the supply chain regarding dry goods, the massive shortage of wine, and all the inflationary pressures out there right now, I am able to tell you this; You are not going to find 100% Cabernet from Napa or Sonoma for $29.99 per bottle that is going to outdrink the quality of this - full stop.

You've been warned - first come, first served. TGIF y'all!

Blind Taste Belle Glos against $15-$25 Rivals!

01.05.2023

Blind Taste 2021 Belle Glos "Balade"

Saturday January 7th, 2022
11am - 8pm
All Day Long!

With all of the awesome Pinot Noirs coming in stock, and to celebrate the New Year, we just had to go ahead and put on a favorite Blind Tasting event of ours...

That's right, it's time to pull the blind tasting train back into the station and convene for our 12th Semi-Annual Belle Glos Blind Tasting!

Like we have said many times before, if you don't know the price, can't see the label, and can't hear someone barking in your ear about the wine's "score," then all that is left is the juice and your taste buds. It's a scary proposition for any winemaker. That's why you have marketing departments that design catchy labels, create campaigns to build a wine's image, and spend all of their time and energy essentially trying to convince consumers that a wine is great. The problem is that you can't out "market" a blind tasting.

Which is why we're playing "Find the Belle Glos" this Saturday. It's simple really. Eight wines will be tasted blind on the tasting machine. One of them will be 2021 Belle Glos "Balade" Pinot Noir and the others will be an assortment of Pinot etc. at every price point from a number of different regions. All you have to do is taste and pick your favorite. Yes, that's right, your favorite. If that's the Belle Glos, then great, if not, well that's OK too. You may be surprised as to what your favorites actually are. To get through all 8 wines will be $8!

Get ready to taste some amazing Pinot Noir! We will announce the winners next Tuesday!

A Top Value for 2023 - $9.99 Per Bottle!

We thought when we opened winestore., and we continue to believe today, that people shouldn't have to spend more than ten dollars to get a darn good bottle of wine. You can spend more if you want, but don't do it unless you want to.

And that brings us to Belcoop Red. It's an absolute stunner of a wine, and at $9.99 it may end up being one of the top value wines we have uncovered in the last few years.

The massive Pays d’Oc, or the country of the “Oc” language (people spoke that in the south before they spoke French), covers the greater part of Mediterranean France. After the railroad was built, linking the south to Paris, wines of the Languedoc filled the carafes of Parisian bistros, and they still do today. But the last century has seen vast improvements to the wines that once were built only for value. Technical know-how learned from Rhone Valley producers is applied to these gems: flash pasteurization for part of the crop helps deliver vibrant fruit and rich flavors, much as it does for some famed names in Chateauneuf-du-Pape.

What all that delivers is a delicious red wine that layers on the complexity and richness you want in a full bodied red wine, with almost no harsh edges. Just to be safe though, we'll have it on the machine at all eight stores just in case you don't believe us... 😁

So let's kick off 2023 in the best possible fashion, shall we? Keeping it thrifty, without sacrificing one iota of quality!
