Our final allotment of the 2020 Montmirail Gigondas has rolled up.

It is a special wine.
 
I’ve now brought it to people who don’t even drink wines from the Rhone (including that one friend I told you about who literally only drinks Pinot Noir) and the consensus is consistent. What in the world is this stuff, and how do I get some? At $26.99 per bottle it represents some serious value - especially for a wine that can also be age worthy.
 
For Thanksgiving? This is the type of stuff to serve. Wine that can be shared, consumed, and really enjoyed by all types of wine drinkers. While it's not in my "everyday" price category, it is a special Holiday after all...
 
What have we told you before?

Denis Cheron, the owner of Domaine du Grand Montmirail, had just moved from Burgundy when he created a co-op in the southern Rhone in the 60s. He handled a lot of different estates’ wines but he thought something very special was happening at Grand Montmirail and, when the owner decided to put it up for sale, he offered it first to Cheron who he felt had so improved his wines.
 
It’s a remarkable spot, with vineyards nestled underneath the great toothy Dentelles de Montmirail looming a hundred yards above them, and with Mount Ventoux jutting up in the distance. This isolated spot is on a long gentle slope, surrounded by rosemary, thyme and sage. The soils are well drained, uplifted ocean floor, littered with limestone and granite, but there are three underground springs so, while hot years can stress so many southern Rhone wines, Montmirail stays cool and calm.
 
Denis’ son Yves, who studied in Burgundy, has refurbished an old convent on the property and made it his family house. The domaine now covers almost 90 acres, all planted exclusively on the hillsides and terraces, known locally as banquettes. The vines benefit from a remarkably sunny exposure while being sheltered from the windy winter mistral by a sort of natural amphitheater.  The altitude of the vineyards varies between 1000 and 1200 feet — among the highest in Gigondas, something that helps the wine retain some acidity.

This will be on my Thanskgiving table this year!

You have been told that Pinot Noir is the most finicky of grapes; indeed, it’s supposed to be the “heartbreak grape.” The statement is not false but it’s also not completely true. To make great Pinot Noir is bloody difficult and to do it consistently is virtually impossible, unless you’re in some famous (and very expensive) place. But that’s true of most grapes. It’s true that Pinot Noir grown in the wrong place is pretty dreadful, maybe more dreadful than most other grapes. But the middle ground has plenty of wealth to it – you need a friendly place for grape growing but not too friendly. With France’s Pays d’Oc, there are places where it’s easy to ripen grapes and areas that offer just enough challenge to coax Pinot Noir into an outrageous value - creating a fresh, fruity and delicious wine....and that's what we have here.

Les Peyrautins checks a lot of boxes for me. On the quality to price scale the wine is off the charts. The packaging is nice (when I serve it nobody would ever guess this bad boy was $9.99! 😁) It's just one of those wines where I feel confident when I open the bottle I am going to really enjoy the overall experience...and that always keeps me coming back!

So let's do this people! Don't leave your family thirsty 😁

If you've been shopping with us for awhile, you know that we love all things Ken Wright...and of the hottest deals we have run the last two years is the Ken Wright Willamette Valley Pinot Noir. It literally is walking itself out the door, and for good reason...the wine is a masterpiece.

What is it about the wine that makes it so good?

Lovers of Oregon Pinot Noir should well know Ken Wright’s name – his single vineyard bottlings are among the most sought-after American Pinot Noirs. He trained at important Pinot Noir locations in California (Talbott, Ventana, and Chalone) before launching Panther Creek Cellars (Go Panthers?!) in 1986.

As important as those early wines were in establishing his reputation and that of the Willamette, his work today is light-years ahead of those wines in both character and longevity. The Willamette bottling is, in some ways, the culmination of all that he has learned about Oregon viticulture. As the author of the applications for one of the critical Willamette sub-regions (Yamhill-Carlton), it’s his experience and understanding that makes the difference.

We first tasted this medium bodied red back in April and fell in love. We placed our order immediately, and thanks to everything running 10x slower than normal (am I right?), the wine has finally arrived from France!

What are we in love with here?

The vast Languedoc-Roussillon is hard to sum up easily; its history as the carafe wines of Parisian cafes is well-known, but there are spots within it that deserve far better treatment. The Famille Nadal wines come from the Roussillon side, and particularly from the Côtes Catalanes, right next to the kingdom of Andorra and bordering Spain. ODC blends the sun-seeking and overt Grenache (90%) with the more peppery and earthier Carignan and, with the low rainfall that is typical in the area, this bears no small resemblance to some of the full flavored Spanish reds made on the other side of the border.

Maybe the most exciting thing about this wine is its versatility. It's got enough flavor to satisfy my full bodied wine likes, but is equal parts delicate. Kinda like it is some sort of a happy hybrid between Cabernet and Pinot Noir (does that even makes sense?!?!).

We'll have it on the machine at all 8 stores all week long so you can see for yourself what all the fuss is about.

Two years ago we took the photo above of some decorations in Wilmington that happened to include a bottle of wine that we carry and decided we just HAD to put it on sale during the week of Halloween. We had so much fun with it we decided we should do it every year!

What's up with the wine?

I'm not gonna lie. This label is a little out there. Maybe it's a lot out there. But when we saw it in a box of samples sitting on our desk a few months ago it certainly stood out. But would the wine be any good?

It was insane.

The Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre varietals are happy bedfellows from anywhere, and the Vellas family sites throughout Mediterranean help create wine with balance as well as intensity. As for the name Double Ripasse? In wine terms, ripasse is to press or to squeeze, and that typically means someone has made wine from grapes but held onto the skins. Then they dump fresh must onto those once-squeezed skins, using the new juice to soak more flavor (and often tannin) from the skins. 
 
Do it twice? Double the pleasure, double the fun :)

So spice up your front porch decorations a bit, and drink some nice wine while you're at it!

We have never been able to offer this wine for $9.99 before, and I'm taking home a case. It has long been one of my favorites..but at less than $10 I need this stuff around for the holidays!

What's the deal with this wine?

We like the Vellas family; we buy a lot of their wines. Why? Because they have 100s of acres of vines at their disposal in southern France? Yes, true. Is it because they consistently offer us wines that reflect their place (places like Pic-Saint-Loup and Lunel, each an area of limestone soils and bright, reflective Mediterranean sun)? Sure, that too. But, actually, it’s because value in French wine can be hard to find and the Vellas family just keeps bringing it to us. Rich, expansive Syrah for this kind of money? Yeah, yeah, that’s why.

While we love most of the value wines from Vellas, this is by far the best we have ever tried.

Rioja, Spain’s oldest and best-known red wine quality region, is undergoing massive change, all of it good. New upstarts are challenging the old guard - and Bodegas Lo Nuevo is right in the mix. Their wonderful Rioja wines reflect the character of old vines from ancient vineyards, honestly and correctly made. Pocapita offers 100% Tempranillo, powerful, compact, and oh so easy drinking.

So if you're into wines that outdrink their price point, we may be in a back up the truck type of situation here! For me, Pocapita offers the perfect compliment to some of the deeper and darker reds in my lineup (I'm looking at you, Carmita). It's also at the price where I can grab a case, drink at home, bring over to friends to watch football etc.

I went back and looked. We've only ever had Escorlada at this price twice - and both times it was pure insanity. Over 3,150 bottles sold in just 4 days last time this happened...👀



The wine has been rated among the top 1% of all wines in the world by Vivino, was our 2019 Wine of the Year and is an all around ridiculous value at $14.99 per bottle.

What's the background?

Bodegas Lo Nuevo is crucial to the modern success of Spanish wine, especially wines from the Levante, the Africa-facing south. Here the Almansa region grows Garnacha, among other traditional Spanish red grapes, but unlike the oxidized, alcoholic wines of yore, the new wines are bright and sunny with all the original fruits from the grape preserved. Lo Nuevo has few peers in this grand evolution from the ancient and occasionally noble to something populist, fruity and modern. But they would be the first to insist that their success is conditioned upon old vines grown at high altitudes. Here the Garnacha is at nearly 3500 feet, where the otherwise relentlessly warm temperatures see nighttime cooling into the 40s.

These old Garnacha vines produce BIG and RICH red wines that don't require the same price points as some of the California peers because, quite frankly, the costs to make them in Almansa are simply not as big as they are in Napa.

So here we go, for six days only, maybe my favorite wine in the store for what is an absolutely silly price.
