When Brooks Bank went on sale a few weeks ago the e-mails started rolling in..."What about Escorlada?" People were like "Spring Break is coming up, we need this sale to happen!"

Well, we're in the business of giving you guys what you want - so here we go! 😂

I love everything about Escorlada. I love the wine, I love the packaging (honestly, it may be the best wine package I have seen), I love the box it comes in, I love the whole thing.

When it is on sale like this? Find me another wine that tastes this good, looks this good, and impresses like this, for $14.99. I'm not sure it exists.



The wine has been rated among the top 1% of all wines in the world by Vivino, was our 2019 Wine of the Year and is an all around ridiculous value at $14.99 per bottle.

What's the background?

Bodegas Lo Nuevo is crucial to the modern success of Spanish wine, especially wines from the Levante, the Africa-facing south. Here the Almansa region grows Garnacha, among other traditional Spanish red grapes, but unlike the oxidized, alcoholic wines of yore, the new wines are bright and sunny with all the original fruits from the grape preserved. Lo Nuevo has few peers in this grand evolution from the ancient and occasionally noble to something populist, fruity and modern. But they would be the first to insist that their success is conditioned upon old vines grown at high altitudes. Here the Garnacha is at nearly 3500 feet, where the otherwise relentlessly warm temperatures see nighttime cooling into the 40s.

These old Garnacha vines produce BIG and RICH red wines that don't require the same price points as some of the California peers because, quite frankly, the costs to make them in Almansa are simply not as big as they are in Napa.

So here we go, for six days only, maybe my favorite wine in the store for what is an absolutely silly price.

I'm not sure whether or not I should be surprised, but over the last several years Zinfandel and Zinfandel based blends are on a tear. Heck, many of our best selling red wines are Zin based - and you might not even know you are drinking it! Think wines like Prisoner, Scout's Honor, Banknote.

In a world where I feel like everything is starting to cost an arm and a leg, we try and celebrate value here at winestore.

If you are into California Chardonnay, I am here to tell you that you will find no Chardonnay under $25 of this quality. I also don’t know of many single vineyard biodynamic wines under $25 - red or white. Honestly, I can’t think of one. So let's start with that....

The 2020 Bonterra “The Roost” Chardonnay is a 100% certified biodynamic single vineyard Chardonnay from the Blue Heron Vineyard in Mendocino County, CA. It is $50 at the winery (here) and we cut a deal with the winery on their last 1,300 six packs so that we could bring it to you for $24.99 per bottle. This also happens to be the lowest price we have ever seen on this wine. Ever.

Bonterra is as close to an OG among the wineries devoted to sustainability and true regenerative viticulture as any among American wineries. This single vineyard wine comes from a spot nestled between the shore of the upper Russian River and a blue heron nesting site and preserve; hence the name of Blue Heron Ranch. It’s Biodynamically farmed, and shows the sort of rich and delicious cut that’s typical of Mendocino Chardonnay.

Is this the Chardonnay deal of the year? Yes, I think so. It's certainly the best we have offered in a looooooong time. It's the kind of deal that reminds us of why we love what we do so much. We can bring you extremely high quality offerings like this for a price that is unmatched.

I love this wine...and this crazy deal we struck at the end of 2022 is sadly about to run dry.

I wish I could drink Il Carbonaione every single day, but that's not my reality. But when we do have it at this price, I try and make a point to drink a few and then put a couple in the wine cooler.
 
I went back and looked, and I still have 6 bottles of the first vintage I ever bought. According to Cellartracker, I paid wholesale $43.26 per bottle for that case of wine nearly 15 years ago .
 
So to be able to bring it to you at $44.99 retail? I'm all in (well, as "all in" as I can be at $45 per bottle 😂)

What's the big deal?

The highly-regarded Carbonaione vineyard is small, about 13 acres of stony, sandy silty loam at about 1500 feet elevation up above the little town of Greve in Chianti, facing west-southwest. It was planted back in 1928, so there are vines of more than 90 years of age, and that on its own is enough. But this is one of the few sites in Chianti planted solely to Sangiovese di Lamole, a clone that may be (researchers are still trying to sort it out) one of the older clones of the grape, and which falls under the Sangiovese Grosso heading (also known as Brunello di Montalcino). The vineyard plot “Il Carbonaione” is so named because the owners found evidence indicating a charcoal pit (in Italian ‘carbone’) located there.
 
The winemaking is straightforward, with a nod towards Chianti’s traditions – both stainless steel tanks and cement vats are used. The same with the barrels: no barriques but larger 350L barrels. The nod towards modernism lies in the use of 90% French and 10% American oak, rather than some Italian chestnut or such. Though the family’s ownership of the vineyard and this bottling date only back to 1992, the wine has already proven quite capable of long aging. You can drink it now with virtually anything rich and flavorful, as powerful as it is, but something silkier and more seductive awaits in a decade or more (if you can wait that long :)

What makes it so good?

A white blend of Vermentino and Clairette from the region called Saint Guilhem le Désert is something maybe you haven’t heard of - and that’s okay. But you might want to know that perhaps the most famous and most highly regarded wine in all of Languedoc-Roussillon, Mas de Daumas, is part of this area. Those wines? $40 and up.

What I find most interesting though is how a wine that is packaged this beautifully, that is this well made, from a small medieval town in the middle of almost nowhere south of France can show up half way across the planet on the shelf for only $14.99. It's tough to really comprehend...but lets not look a gift horse in the mouth!

If you're a Chianti fan like I am, this is a do not miss wine.

Castello Vicchiomaggio is a part of Tuscan history, even if that is a place that these days more often serves as a film backdrop or wedding venue than as the beating heart of a great wine estate. But they’ve always had the money to do really good wine, and indeed they have done that at times. It’s just that you have to stay on top of what they are doing if you want to get that really good wine. From the late 1990s a new family took over this nearly millennia old estate, and they want to be taken seriously – this wine is a good start; they would argue that they started moving towards excellence as soon as they took over. They may be right; nothing in wine is fixed: the great have their off vintages. The decent producers can suddenly do excellent wine. That’s our job: find them.
 
Agostino Petri Chianti Classico is Vicchiomaggio with a Riserva designation, Sangiovese with a dollop of Cabernet Sauvignon, and from a single, great vineyard. This wine is aged in the used La Prima barrels, and then aged in larger format barrels for another half year or so. This is the Italian way and these both reflect that heritage. But they also reflect how much Italy has changed in the last twenty years and how modern and exciting the wines have become.

So.......full bodied Chianti Classico Riserva for less than $20 from an epic producer? Yes, please!

A record breaking heat wave is set for North Carolina this week, and that has me dreaming of Spring and Summer!

So we reached out to the supplier of our favorite warm weather wine, Swimbad, and were able to cut a deal! (Did I mention how much I love these PET bottles? They fit in the fridge so well!)

This blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Colombard is just an overall pleasurable experience. It kinda embodies both the classic style of traditional French white wine and the very modern pursuit of fresh fruity flavors.

As we've said before, there is so much about wine that is subjective. If we are to understand how traditional wines came to be, it’s to know that pleasure is the goal. As James Joyce said of his epic Ulysses, the book should end with the most positive word in the English language. "Yes.”

If Super Tuscan wines are your thing, this is a wine you need to be drinking. Il Fauno is one of those wines that has a universal effect on people. It makes the drinker think, "Why haven't I known about this until now?" and sometimes "Why do I need to spend more than $25 on wine when stuff like this exists!". 

It's that good.

Tenuta di Arceno is an ancient Tuscan estate, massive in scale at over 2500 acres, producing some of the most interesting and powerful wines in the Chianti Classico DOCG region and under the Toscana IGT designation. The estate is in the southern portion of Chianti Classico in the all-important commune of Castelnuovo Berardenga where Il Fauno is produced.
 
Here Merlot is the dominant grape, at about half the blend, with Cabernet Franc playing a supporting role and only a bit of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. It’s grown in the rather warmer sunnier portion of the estate and, with more clay, famously a soil that Merlot can, in the right places, do great things.

So let us drink a wonderful Super Tuscan tonight, and perhaps begin planning that great family vacation to Italy we always wanted to take. Or let's just drink some good wine because it is Thursday and we want to 😁

So it turns out Langtry makes a Lillie's Collection Chardonnay. They asked if we wanted to try it, and based on the success of their red wine with our customers, we of course said yes.

That said, high quality Chardonnay is TOUGH y'all. Inexpensive high quality Chardonnay is even tougher. If we can find a winner in that category once every couple of years, that is considered a huge win.

This Chardonnay? From California? At $9.99 on sale? I can only tell you it will make a run as the best domestic Chardonnay we have ever carried that can retail for less than $10.

It has all the richness and power that you seek out of a Rombauer or Sonoma Cutrer, without any harsh edges at all. 

Like I don't know how long they will keep making this beauty at this price, but we are all in for as long as we can run with it!

We'll have it on the tasting machines at all 8 locations for the rest of the week, just in case you don't trust us 😁!

The quote above is from the 2019 Dry Creek Mariner front label, and while it has absolutely nothing to do with how delicious this wine is, we thought it was pretty awesome and thus decided to include it in this e-mail. Anyhoo - back to the topic at hand - Dry Creek Mariner at the lowest price in the US! If still waters suggest depth, a wine of this balance and equanimity is proof that noise and intensity aren't required for richness. A blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, 11% Malbec and 8% Petit Verdot, this has length and character, but it’s not ever about the high alcohol intensity typical of California’s celebrated wines.

We recently told you about Belcoop Red. It's an absolute stunner of a wine, and at $9.99 it may end up being one of the top value wines we have uncovered in the last few years.

Well....it turns out they make a white wine as well, and it is every bit as delicious as the red!

What's going on here?

Grenache Blanc, a white mutation of Grenache Noir, is a work in progress but only because the consumer is still discovering it. Producers long ago realized its potential for crisp white wines that are so much more than merely crisp. With enough sunshine, Grenache Blanc can develop weight and power, not quite Chardonnay but no light white either. In truth, it’s not wholly a white wine in its density, befitting its kinship with the major grape of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The wine is fermented like Chardonnay in some ways, though the stainless steel variety; its lees are stirred in the tank, creating greater richness and texture, and Grenache Blanc is very happy that way.

You will be too, once you try this thing!

Lillie's Collection is back!!!!

October 2021 was the last time we saw this wine and honestly we thought we would never see it again. It was (and still is) and project for BevMo in California from Langtry - but the winery called us back in November and asked if we would be interested in the wine again...as BevMo may have ordered more than they needed.

The answer was of course yes, as this absolutely stunning red blend was one of our best selling wines for the short time that we had it.

What makes this wine so awesome?

The wine business can be a weird place, and the story behind this wine is a prime example.

So there was a wine made by a Guenoc Winery and Langtry Winery partnership called "Lillie's Collection Victorian Claret" for a California wine powerhouse called BevMo.

Guenoc and Langtry decide to split up. Langtry owns the trademark to "Lillie's Collection". Guenoc owns the trademark to "Victorian Claret".

Potential problem? Indeed.

Langtry continues producing the wine for BevMo but has to put "Red Wine" on the label instead of "Victorian Claret". BevMo says that doesn't work - now they don't want the wine anymore. (notice how on Bevo's website it still says "Victorian Claret 👀)

...one thing leads to another and next thing you know we get to offer you this wine at an absolutely silly price. Like I said, the wine business is a weird place.

Langtry Farms was originally founded back in the 19th Century by entertainer Lillie Langtry, who purchased 4,200 acres in Northern California around 1888. Today, Langtry Estate makes up over 21,000 acres and is one of the largest continuous land holdings in all of California.

Their Petite Sirah, which makes up the base of this blend, is one of the best Petite values in the North Coast. Both powerful and well balanced, it's a prime example of what stunning values can come out of the North Coast when left at the hands of a master like winemaker Eric Stine.

So BevMo's loss is your gain - at least until it runs out again!
