My wife and I love nice Chardonnay...but for weeknight wines, the really nice stuff is not in our budget.
The wine I have potentially been most excited for in 2023 is Maison Belliac Chardonnay: 1) Because I love good Chardonnay and 2) It's something both my wife and I love to drink so we can share the bottle!
Maison Belliac, when we first tasted it, I thought was a dead ringer for high end California Chardonnay - and last weekend I decided to put that to the test.
We opened a bottle of our favorite - Kistler Chardonnay - and tasted it next to Maison Belliac. So can a Chardonnay we have on sale this Labor Day Weekend for $9.99 taste just like an $80 bottle of Kistler Chardonnay?
The answer is - no. 🤣
While it doesn't taste exactly the same, it does taste extremely close.
And given Kistler is 10x the price of Maison Belliac - to me this is a huge win.
Full transparency? My wife could not tell the difference between the two. Which disappointed her on one hand, and then when she realized she loved this wine potentially just as much she got excited for our potential savings 😂
Will it age gracefully and does it have cellar potential? Absolutely not (or at least I don't think so).
Does it over deliver for the price by a HUGE multiple - it does.
So what is happening here?
When the French decided to build the Canal du Midi, they unsurprisingly chose a portion of the Pays d’Oc that is flatter and less mountainous than much of the regional landscape. Indeed, the Canal’s construction saw some smoothing out of the countryside and in some portions, they’ve created the conditions for low-lying vineyards that were cooled by Mediterranean breezes.
Since they’re growing Chardonnay in this site, it helps that the ground is mostly calcareous marl, the sort of well-drained limestone and clay that typifies the Burgundy region far away. The climate is different, needless to say, but not so very different from sunny California, and the wine has some of that same buttery character that West Coast Chardonnay exemplifies.
So there you go!
I know what I'm drinking tonight!!
