I've been thinking a lot about value lately. I'm sure I'm not alone. 

Every single item in our daily lives seems to be taking a price increase. Bacon? It's crazy. Christmas Trees? Don't even get me started. I saw a cheeseburger at a casual restaurant the other day listed at $22. Fries not included.

So it gives me great pleasure when we can offer you the following 3 wines, all that represent some of the best value we have ever seen in the wine business.

I'll start with our Wine of the Year - 2019 Willowlake Sonoma County Cabernet.

This was a one off lot brought to us by wine wizard Baron Ziegler way back in the winter of last year. The winemaker of the estate where he bought this juice from is one of the most legendary female winemakers in California history. Their $150 Cabernets regularly receive insanely high scores (the 2019 Estate Cabernet - the same vintage as our juice - received 98 points from James Suckling). Their wine program apparently was so successful that they even started bottling some of their leftover juice themselves (vs. bulking it out) and were still charging $80 per bottle!!
 
This is dense, dark, tannic Cabernet for those of you that like the big stuff - but it is not over the top. First sip you can tell the quality of the fruit, and the craftsmanship.

But after having had this wine for 3 months now, I can say with certainty the same thing I told you when it was released. You are not going to find 100% Cabernet from Napa or Sonoma for $29.99 per bottle that is going to outdrink the quality of this - full stop. 

It is our Wine of the Year in 2022 because it embodies everything we love about wine, and everything we value here at winestore. Impeccable quality, and outrageous value. 

The sad part is it was a one off deal. So when it is gone it is gone - but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy it while it is here.

Life is short. The holidays are a time to celebrate with your family and friends with great food and drink...and we think this would be a great addition to your table.

With all that said though, do not forget about our runners up.

For Brooks Bank Cabernet, I'll just leave it at what Ian Coyne, one of the most serious wine drinkers at our whole company and head of our Lake Norman store said about this wine when he first tasted it - "I have never had a Cabernet at this price point as complex as this...". Ignore that information at your own risk 😂

Bleu Blanc Thau? Sometimes wines just work. This wine showed up on our doorstep with very little fanfare, we put it on the tasting machine, and it took off from there. This wine has become a juggernaut of high quality value and sales have grown exponentially. Even one of our most serious white burgundy drinkers at a store recently opined that this was "the absolute favorite wine I've had tried in a long while" and this wine is neither burgundy nor at a burgundy price point.

No matter which wines you try, we also just want to take another moment to say thank you. We are honored and humbled by the opportunity to serve your wine needs, and we do not take it for granted.

The #1 selling wine in the store since its return on August 26th has been Cape Charles Cabernet. It was our wine of the year last year, and honestly it could have been it again in 2022. 

Sometimes a winery just catches lightning in a bottle, and Baron Ziegler and Rob Fischer did just that...

We opined at the end of August that "This will also be, without question, the fastest selling $24.99 wine in the 16+ years we have been in business." - and we are here to report that you guys have set records over the last year that I'm not sure will ever be broken.

Get while the gettin' is good! I know what I'm drinking tonight 😁

Here is what we originally told you about the wine.

I’ll be honest…I’m not exactly sure where to start.
 
Back in January when we gave you last call on the 2019 Cape Charles, I said "We are desperately working with Baron Ziegler (who brought us the wine) and the winery to see if there potentially could be another run - but talks have stalled out for now, and even if we can get a deal done the soonest it could be here is MAY.”
 
As it turns out, we were able to work a deal back in January - but I was wrong about the May part (supply chain issues are real!). Since that deal was struck, the winery we sourced this fruit from received a near perfect score from a one of the worlds top wine critics.

Do they now wish they had this juice back? I’m guessing 1000% yes. Are we insane to offer it to you today for only $24.99 per bottle given what it could potentially fetch? 1000% yes.
 
I cannot tell you in good conscience that this is the best deal we will ever offer, as I’d like to believe that we will continue to source outstanding juice like this as our contacts get better and better. I can tell you this is the best deal we have ever offered to date. This will also be, without question, the fastest selling $24.99 wine in the 16+ years we have been in business.

Cape Charles Cabernet from the Moon Mountain District will go down as one of the best value wines we ever offered. I wish I had bought more, as I’ve already consumed everything I bought...
 
So when Baron Ziegler, the wine wizard that brought us that deal, came to me and said “I think I found Cape Charles version 2.0”, we said no way. I e-mailed him and said in no uncertain terms that if we were going to do Cape Charles again, it needed to be absolutely lights out. It had to be as special as the first time around.

He turned around and texted me the below photo:



What are we looking at here?

I can't show you the name on the bottle for all sorts of wine related legal reasons. The winery has been making wine since 1977. They’ve notched multiple 100 point scores. Their track record with the critics, from 2015-2018 shown in the image below, almost makes it seem like they are cheating. Some have opined that their 1978 Cabernet Sauvignon was one of the most important wines ever made in America.


 
This particular lot, is the exact same wine the winery will be selling for $139.99

I’m really not sure how things like this exist (are we really living in a simulation?), but I’m here for it and happy to buy up as much as I can.

You have been told that Pinot Noir is the most finicky of grapes; indeed, it’s supposed to be the “heartbreak grape.” The statement is not false but it’s also not completely true. To make great Pinot noir is bloody difficult and to do it consistently is virtually impossible, unless you’re in some famous place. But that’s true of most grapes. It’s true that Pinot noir grown in the wrong place is pretty dreadful, maybe more dreadful than most other grapes. But the middle ground has plenty of wealth to it – you need a friendly place for grape growing but not too friendly. With France’s Pays d’Oc, there are places where it’s easy to ripen grapes and areas that offer just enough challenge to coax Pinot Noir into showing its friendly and compelling side. We are gonna kick off December with a bang, and celebrate the arrival of the new vintage of my "go to" wine in the entire store.

How do we do that? We put it on sale, of course!

I love everything about Escorlada. I love the wine, I love the packaging, I love the box it comes in, I love the whole thing.

When it is on sale like this? Find me another wine that tastes this good, looks this good, and impresses like this, for $14.99. I'm not sure it exists.



The wine has been rated among the top 1% of all wines in the world by Vivino, was our 2019 Wine of the Year and is an all around ridiculous value at $14.99 per bottle.

What's the background?

Bodegas Lo Nuevo is crucial to the modern success of Spanish wine, especially wines from the Levante, the Africa-facing south. Here the Almansa region grows Garnacha, among other traditional Spanish red grapes, but unlike the oxidized, alcoholic wines of yore, the new wines are bright and sunny with all the original fruits from the grape preserved. Lo Nuevo has few peers in this grand evolution from the ancient and occasionally noble to something populist, fruity and modern. But they would be the first to insist that their success is conditioned upon old vines grown at high altitudes. Here the Garnacha is at nearly 3500 feet, where the otherwise relentlessly warm temperatures see nighttime cooling into the 40s.

These old Garnacha vines produce BIG and RICH red wines that don't require the same price points as some of the California peers because, quite frankly, the costs to make them in Almansa are simply not as big as they are in Napa.

So here we go, for four days only, maybe my favorite wine in the store for what is an absolutely silly price.

When it comes to entry level bottlings in the Rhone Valley, nobody does it better than Domaine de Marcoux.

Some of the prized bottles in my cellar are not $100 wines, but $20 bottles of 2010, 2012 and 2015 Marcoux Cotes du Rhone (I literally horde these bottles like gold bricks :). In stellar vintages, everything Marcoux makes is brilliant; in good vintages, everything they make is great. For the 2021 vintage, consider this an extremely brilliant Cotes du Rhone. Marcoux was also one of the first bio-dynamic producers in all of France...which only proves they've been ahead of the curve for a LONG time.

Every time I get to drink a bottle of this stuff, I pull the glass away and just think "Darn, that is a great bottle of wine for $20." It really does taste like a baby Chateauneuf du Pape, and for the price, for my taste buds, it is just about everything I could ever want in a bottle of wine.

For this price, it is a dream wine for all lovers of Rhone wines.

Only downside? Our distributor was closing this wine out and only had 416 bottles available at this price...so get while the gettin' is good!!

Our final allotment of the 2020 Montmirail Gigondas has rolled up.

It is a special wine.
 
I’ve now brought it to people who don’t even drink wines from the Rhone (including that one friend I told you about who literally only drinks Pinot Noir) and the consensus is consistent. What in the world is this stuff, and how do I get some? At $26.99 per bottle it represents some serious value - especially for a wine that can also be age worthy.
 
For Thanksgiving? This is the type of stuff to serve. Wine that can be shared, consumed, and really enjoyed by all types of wine drinkers. While it's not in my "everyday" price category, it is a special Holiday after all...
 
What have we told you before?

Denis Cheron, the owner of Domaine du Grand Montmirail, had just moved from Burgundy when he created a co-op in the southern Rhone in the 60s. He handled a lot of different estates’ wines but he thought something very special was happening at Grand Montmirail and, when the owner decided to put it up for sale, he offered it first to Cheron who he felt had so improved his wines.
 
It’s a remarkable spot, with vineyards nestled underneath the great toothy Dentelles de Montmirail looming a hundred yards above them, and with Mount Ventoux jutting up in the distance. This isolated spot is on a long gentle slope, surrounded by rosemary, thyme and sage. The soils are well drained, uplifted ocean floor, littered with limestone and granite, but there are three underground springs so, while hot years can stress so many southern Rhone wines, Montmirail stays cool and calm.
 
Denis’ son Yves, who studied in Burgundy, has refurbished an old convent on the property and made it his family house. The domaine now covers almost 90 acres, all planted exclusively on the hillsides and terraces, known locally as banquettes. The vines benefit from a remarkably sunny exposure while being sheltered from the windy winter mistral by a sort of natural amphitheater.  The altitude of the vineyards varies between 1000 and 1200 feet — among the highest in Gigondas, something that helps the wine retain some acidity.

This will be on my Thanskgiving table this year!

(I may also open a bottle tonight...you know, just to test the product one last time before it is showtime!)

Why, at $9.99, is this one of my favorite wines in the store?
 
You have been told that Pinot Noir is the most finicky of grapes; indeed, it’s supposed to be the “heartbreak grape.” The statement is not false but it’s also not completely true. To make great Pinot Noir is bloody difficult and to do it consistently is virtually impossible, unless you’re in some famous (and very expensive) place. But that’s true of most grapes. It’s true that Pinot Noir grown in the wrong place is pretty dreadful, maybe more dreadful than most other grapes. But the middle ground has plenty of wealth to it – you need a friendly place for grape growing but not too friendly. With France’s Pays d’Oc, there are places where it’s easy to ripen grapes and areas that offer just enough challenge to coax Pinot Noir into an outrageous value - creating a fresh, fruity and delicious wine....and that's what we have here.

Les Peyrautins checks a lot of boxes for me. On the quality to price scale the wine is off the charts. The packaging is nice (when I serve it nobody would ever guess this bad boy was $9.99! 😁) It's just one of those wines where I feel confident when I open the bottle I am going to really enjoy the overall experience...and that always keeps me coming back!

So let's do this people! Don't leave your family thirsty 😁

If you've been shopping with us for awhile, you know that we love all things Ken Wright...and of the hottest deals we have run the last two years is the Ken Wright Willamette Valley Pinot Noir. It literally is walking itself out the door, and for good reason...the wine is a masterpiece.

What is it about the wine that makes it so good?

Lovers of Oregon Pinot Noir should well know Ken Wright’s name – his single vineyard bottlings are among the most sought-after American Pinot Noirs. He trained at important Pinot Noir locations in California (Talbott, Ventana, and Chalone) before launching Panther Creek Cellars (Go Panthers?!) in 1986.

As important as those early wines were in establishing his reputation and that of the Willamette, his work today is light-years ahead of those wines in both character and longevity. The Willamette bottling is, in some ways, the culmination of all that he has learned about Oregon viticulture. As the author of the applications for one of the critical Willamette sub-regions (Yamhill-Carlton), it’s his experience and understanding that makes the difference.
