This is the third wine this week we have featured from Domaine Vellas, and for good reason.
1) Nicolas Vellas is one of the hottest winemakers in France right now
2) A container we ordered with all their stuff finally arrived 😂
Over four generations of winemaking, the Vellas family has slowly assembled a strong group of properties in Languedoc and Roussillon (Mediterranean France). In beautiful sites like Mas du Pont (near Montpellier) they have created not only a vast set of vineyards but also farmlands, bull breeding, equestrian centers, olive groves and more. They pull their Cabernet from areas such as Costiere de Nimes, Coteau Varois, Oc, Saint-Guilhem, Grès, Saint Drézery, Muscat de Lunel, Languedoc, Pic St. Loup and Faugères. With Cabernet spread out across these sunny and Mediterranean climes, ripeness and aromatics are both in strong supply.
So if you are like me and are always on the lookout for inexpensive Cabernet, this fits firmly in that wheelhouse.
To recap:
1) One of the best winemakers in France right now
2) 100% Cabernet
3) Crazy Value

100% Organic French Sauvignon Blanc for less than $15 - yes, please!
Domaine Vellas has fun with its labels but don’t think less of their wines for that. They know their business, with sixty vineyards totaling 250 acres under their control, the character and value is known by one and all.
Les Naturels Sauvignon Blanc is blended from vineyards in the southern part of the vast and crucial Languedoc-Roussillon region and, if the Languedoc-Roussillon is somehow overlooked due to its ubiquity, it’s important to understand that some of France’s oldest vines are planted along its limestone slopes, many on vertiginous hillsides or nearly overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. This 100% organic wine is not some leftover souvenir from a producer’s vain attempt to create some over priced Sancerre clone. This is made to be seductive, slippery southern French Sauvignon Blanc.
What pairs perfectly with 90+ degree heat?? You know it!

You may remember this wine from 2019…which feels like it was a lifetime ago. If there ever were a $25 baby Chateauneuf, this is it.
When COVID hit, what little we had left of this wine was gobbled up - and as far as we knew there was no more to be had…until we got a message about 8 months ago.
Domaine Vellas is a small operation, and sometimes mistakes get made. When we placed our latest order for other products with them in September 2021, they informed us they had 147 six packs (73.5 cases) of the Garoloup that they mistakenly thought had been labeled with EU labels - and instead they were labeled with our US labels.
Score!
We thought this shipment would have been here by Christmas - but enter basically the most insane global shipping environment on record - and the wine finally arrived to our distributor last week!
Our original e-mail and back story on this wine is below. Since the wine arrived back in the store on Friday, weekend traffic gobbled up 44 of those cases, leaving just 354 bottles remaining.
You guys know what to do!

Last month we told you about the largest wine trade show in the world, and the best wine we had at said show in terms of quality and price. Les Prejuges has since taken off like a rocket ship, but what we didn't tell you about was our favorite wine we had at the show, regardless of price.
Some quick background. At this trade show you can set up meetings, just cruise around and taste at booths, or they had these tasting stations organized by region where you can taste without someone giving you the sales pitch. It was at one of these stations (the Rhone one to be exact) where we tasted a wine that, as Andrew Jefford once said, “rearranged my inner pantheon in a way that truly great wine can."
The label was awesome, the glass had an etched mountain range and the wine itself was just massive and delicious. We had trouble figuring out the booth for the winery, so I just took a snap of the back label and we figured we would hunt them down on the interwebs later.
So we’re cruising around these giant airline hangers filled with wines to taste and there is a booth with literally a HUGE LINE of people waiting to taste / talk to the proprietors. We were intrigued. We kinda slow walked by and don’t you know, sitting on the counter, is the wine we tasted and loved. Clearly we were not alone as groups of people were holding the bottle up, tasting over and over again, and speaking to the owners.
We waited our turn, rolled up and began negotiations. We had to have it! This wine has never before been sold in the United States. You all are the first people to get a crack at it. When they told us the price we would be able to offer it to you, we had a tough time keeping any type of poker face we were so excited.
The blend here is Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre from the appellation of Pic Saint Loup (you may not know it, but you do now!). I honestly would encourage anyone who likes big red wine to give this a try. I think / hope you will be as stunned as we were…
As for the name of the wine - having the word “blanc” (white in French) on a red wine I thought might be confusing in the US, but the winery told me this name comes from an old French Proverb and they were not changing it, so we kept everything the way they originally packaged it…you can read more about the origin of the name HERE - it's pretty awesome.

A $20 Cabernet You Really Should Try...

We tried Gail "Doris" Cabernet for the first time last September. It was a random sample sent to us a in box full of random samples, and all I can tell you is that for $20 this wine was on point. It was one of the best Cabernets we tried all last fall.
Added bonus? It is organic and 100% single vineyard fruit.
You all seemed to agree, as we ran out of the wine in 3 weeks.
Good news though - the 2020 vintage has finally arrived (they could not find any glass to bottle the wine in for 5 months)!
You can read more about Gail Wines HERE, but long story short is this: Dan O’Brien is a working class Boston area fellow who fell into the wine trade via the restaurant biz. He moved to the Bay Area to help run a wine program at an elite restaurant and found himself next to restaurant and wine superstars who showed him the opportunities growing just up the road, and he eventually took the red pill and jumped in as a winemaker.
There is plenty of stuff coming out of Sonoma and even more so Napa at 4x the price that I would put this up against...I'm not kidding, not even a little bit. It’s also rare to see single vineyard organic Cabernet offerings hit this price point.
If Cabernet Sauvignon is your thing, you’re gonna want to give this a try!
If Cabernet Sauvignon is not your thing, maybe try it anyway? I kinda think it's that good. One of those wines that everyone will like (famous last words...)
Happy Thursday!!

Only 83 cases remain (roughly 10 per store)
The one thing about wine is that each vintage there is only so much of each product. So when producers move from one vintage to the next, the same deals may not be available.
So I am sad to report maybe my favorite Italian value we have ever carried - the 2018 Morellino Val delle Rose - is coming off deal as they transition to a new vintage. The 83 cases we have left is all we are getting at this price - and now there are 82 and 1/2 cases because 6 bottles are coming home with me 😁
What makes the wine so great?
Everybody wants to know where the great wine values are. It doesn’t matter how much money you have – I’ve always found that regardless of cash at the table, if you want to get everyone’s attention, just whisper sotto voce, I found this amazing wine that’s a crazy great price. And that’s what Morellino di Scansano is.
It’s like Bolgheri (you know, Sassicaia at nearly $250?) only at a tiny fraction of the price. Like its big brother region, the vineyards are only a few miles from the Tyrrhenian Sea and so the wines have greater bite and spice than Sangiovese-based wines from Chianti only a handful of miles to the northern interior. But they’re not generally as age-worthy as Bolgheri wines which means we can afford them and you can drink them. This Sangiovese (with a little bit of French grapes thrown in) is aged in French oak for six months, and rests between friendly and burly. It’s waiting for you to throw some meats on the grill. And then it will go down really easy.
So you have been warned - get while the gettin' is good!
Happy Tuesday!

I know one thing Mom wants for Mother's Day. Bubbly. So what better option than to give her a name that shows you not only have exquisite taste, but at a price that shows you are thrifty as well 😁
Once all great sparkling wine came from Champagne, or at least that’s what we were told. But back in the 80s and 90s, Champagne houses began producing bubblies in California and Australia, and some of them have come to rival the elegant houses back in France.
Indeed, Domaine Carneros not only makes delicious, complex sparkling wine, they have their own damned, French-looking chateau (look it up or drop by next time you're in Napa or Sonoma). Eileen Crane, who created their first wines in 1987, set them on a terrific path, inspired by the parent Champagne Taittinger, but finding a way to weave in an American-styled richness and friendliness to it as well.
So let us all celebrate Mom the right way this weekend. Grab her a bottle to show her she is special, and then invite all her friends over for an impromptu short get together to enjoy it!
Happy Mother's Day!

One of the biggest breakout stars of the last 12 months here at winestore. has been Libero Brunello di Montalcino. Inexpensive it is not, but clearly you all agree with us that this packs an extremely powerful punch and outdrinks its price point by a wide margin.
Did we mention it is also nearly 40% off? The next lowest online price by the bottle on this vintage is $49.90! 👀
What is up with the wine?
It’s an odd thing but until about thirty years ago, Chianti had rules that disallowed any wine that was 100% Sangiovese from being labeled as a Chianti. Weird, right? Everyone understood that Sangiovese was the best grape in Tuscany. But any labeled Chianti had to have other grapes blended into it, for better or worse.
It was always odd since Brunello di Montalcino had been long the most highly respected wine in the Tuscany region, and it is 100% Sangiovese. That has changed, but Brunello remains atop all other Sangiovese wines, from anywhere in Italy or elsewhere. These wines are better than they have ever been.
While yes, Brunello wines are better than they have ever been, the prices reflect that trend. Brunello prices have been on a steep climb, and finding it for less than $30 is a rare feat. Knowing that, you can imagine when we stumbled upon this gem from Volio Imports, we jumped all over it.
All this has kinda made me decide that I think I'm gonna have a glass tonight. Why not, right?
Happy Wednesday!

"One of the greatest values in the wine world has to be the Kerbuccio cuvée from Jean-Marc Lafage’s Chateau Saint Roch estate in Maury."
- Influential Wine Critic Jeb Dunnuck
While everyone has a different definition of "value" (I think mine is more in the $9.99 price range!), there is no question that Kerbuccio out drinks its price point by a huge factor.
If medium to full bodied red wine is in your wheelhouse, this is a must try. I have yet to hear of any person not enjoying this wine, and in a business where taste is so subjective, that is really saying something!
You all already tasted the red wine and the rosé from this Jean-Marc Lafage and Eric Solomon collaboration back in April - and Kerbuccio is the flagship product from this estate.
You don't have to take our word for it though - we will have it on the tasting machine at all eight stores just in case you don't believe us when we tell you how good it is!!
So to kick the week off we have:
- Wine called one of the greatest values in the world by a top critic
- Eric Solomon selection
- Jean-Marc Lafage made wine
I think we know what to do here 😁

New Vintage Of Our Best Selling Chardonnay!

2021 Préjugés Chardonnay

In the Chardonnay sea of Sonoma Cutrer, Rombauer, Mer Soleil, Benieres, Sea Sun, Frank Family etc. hides one Chardonnay that outsells them all here at winestore. Its name is Préjugés...and the new vintage of this behemoth has finally arrived!
Préjugés is one of those wines that flies under the radar, but once you get it in your weekly rotation, it rarely leaves. The numbers are quite staggering, but would you believe that you all have made NC the #1 market for this wine on planet earth? 'Tis true. The wine is just silly good.
What makes Préjugés so awesome?
If you had told me that a French Chardonnay, from a little known producer, from a little known region (Cabardès), would become our top Chardonnay offering in 2019, 2020, 2021 and so far in 2022 - without question I would have thought you were crazy.
California Chardonnay dominates the charts here at winestore., but Préjugés is something special, and took our sales by storm.
I mean, Cabardès has not always been a favored site for white wine, but its intense limestone soils are beginning to consistently offer Chardonnay of Burgundy-like nerve. This barrel aged white has qualities that both California and French Chardonnay lovers are going to go "ga ga" over, and it drinks better than some California Chardonnay and white burgundies at 4x the price (no joke).
So what are you drinkin' this weekend? Let's do this!

We met some friends last week at their pool for a little swimming fun early in this spring season and Swimbad white was the wine of choice. I had forgotten a) how much I love this wine and b) how nice bottles that can't break are when you are outdoors!
This blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Colombard is just an overall pleasurable experience. It kinda embodies both the classic style of traditional French white wine and the very modern pursuit of fresh fruity flavors.
As we've said before, there is so much about wine that is subjective. If we are to understand how traditional wines came to be, it’s to know that pleasure is the goal. Of course, we could demand more but why is that necessary? Isn’t pleasure enough? Shouldn’t we enjoy wines for what they are and what they offer? If the last two years have taught us nothing else, it is that seeing the downside of everything is easy. Our goal is to find the positive. As James Joyce said of his epic Ulysses, the book should end with the most positive word in the English language. "Yes.”
So I'm going to continue to say "yes" to SWIMBAD white this Spring and Summer - more often than not...and at $7.99 I think I'm going to say "yes" to a six pack 😂

You may have read earlier in the week that when Eric Solomon and Jean Marc Lafage get together magical things happen in wine.
Well, today we have for you a deal on what may be their specialty....delicious rosé.
Lafage is arguably the most interesting name in southern France; wines at all price levels and everything, absolutely everything, is delicious. This unctuous pink wine is dry, stony, fruity, and lengthy. To say it packs a powerful punch for its price point would be a wild understatement.
So let's keep it short and sweet for this Thursday morning, ok? It's spring. The rosé is chilled. Let's have a day, shall we?

I'm pleased to be able to report the new vintage of Cary Potet Montagny "Les Bassets" has finally arrived!
Les Bassets in one short year has become our best selling white Burgundy - and for good reason - value like this in Burgundy is extremely tough to find (especially right now!)
On the flip side of that coin, Burgundy is like a vast field of mushrooms: potential beauties are popping up overnight, seemingly out of nowhere, and they may be tasty or they may be just terrible; only the experts know for sure. And maybe the word "expert" is too precious a term; it’s more like the people who have wandered about and scavenged the hills for years and know where the good stuff hides. Cary Potet is an ideal example of hidden Burgundy; the label disappeared after being imported by a small producer for decades. Retirement of the owner/vintner was the simple explanation. Fast forward to today and the wine is currently being made by a new family who similarly loved the estate (particularly the Montagny we are offering today), its little castle, and the wines it created. These folks, the Desfontaine family, have been making wine for 12 generations at their own nearby estate in the Cotes Chalonnaise. The family motto is ‘Ex Nihilo Nihil’: nothing comes from nothing. But from hard work, delicious wine can be coaxed from the old stones.
The concentration and fullness of their wines reach a level that exist in only a handful of Montagny producers, none of which are producing wines at this level of value. Oh, and we'll have it on sale through Sunday - just because we love you guys that much!
As always, THANK YOU for your business. We work hard to try and earn your business each and every day, and I promise we do not take it for granted.

No one is slowing down the Wagner clan. With the Copper Cane series of wineries, this multi-generational dynamo has eminently gulp-able wine to bring to market. Elouan is another project helmed by famed grandson of Charlie Wagner (he made Caymus) and Chuck Wagner’s youngest son (who helped create Belle Glos and then Meiomi).
As a fifth generation Napa Valley winemaker, Joe Wagner had learned his way around a vineyard and winery long before he was able to drink wine. By the time he was 19, he was in it up to his elbows. In 2014, he opened a new company Copper Cane Wines & Provisions, and Elouan Winery became one of his Pinot Noir obsessions (think Belle Glos).
Let us explain the name “Missoulan Wash” on the label: a term that describes not only the little piece of northern Oregon owned by the Wagner Family but much of the Pacific Northwest landscape as well. About fifteen thousand years ago, there were floods that originated around present-day Missoula, Montana, glacial dams that broke and spilled water a hundred or more feet high traveling across what is now Washington and Oregon at nearly fifty miles an hour. Since there were people living there then, that was definitely a bad day. But the good news is that the floods altered the landscape in unique ways, and this part of Oregon shares some of the flood materials and washed rocks that were pooled in places along the flood route.
The wines from these places can be large and Elouan wines proffer big fruit and character. Elouan offers a Pinot Noir style reminiscent of the Caymus mentality: lush, supple, ripe and rich.
We had to start the Holiday weekend off with a huge deal, right? TGIF!

If you haven’t run into this label yet, you’re likely to see it more in the coming years; there’s a lot of flavor in those old "reserve" vines. Oak Ridge Winery was founded back in 2002, with three long-time Lodi families converting a coop built on quantity into one that coaxed quality wines from ancient vineyards. In fact, Oak Ridge Winery is the oldest operating winery in Lodi, built way back in 1934.
Their wine is everything you would want in a big, rich Zin - intensity without imbalance, equal parts longevity and lushness and those dark berry fruits we all know and love.
Staying with our ever present theme of trying to bring you the best possible wines and the lowest possible prices, we're going to offer this one today at the lowest price in the US by 21%!
As always, THANK YOU for your business! We are honored and humbled by the opportunity to serve you. We hope you enjoy the wine!

You've seen this movie before.
- Jean Marc Lafage made wine...
- Eric Solomon Selection...
- It's delicious...
But dang people, every time I get one of these new products, taste them, and then see the price... I honestly have trouble believing what I am seeing / tasting.
What's up with this particular wine?
Maury is not a person; it’s a place, in the warm Agly Valley along the Mediterranean coast of France with Priorat-like schist soils. The traditional wines built on old Grenache vines but the brilliant Jean-Marc Lafage creates this gem as a dry and powerful Grenache, and Syrah blend.
It's a perfect example of why Solomon and Lafage are so successful. Take a region where vines have been cultivated for centuries, but people are just now paying attention. Bring in a winemaker whose sole focus is churning out some of the best value wines in the world. Purchase grapes from said high quality vines at a ridiculous price. Bring to market wine that if made in the Rhone Valley would cost 2-3x as much. Repeat as necessary.
As long as these two keep the hits coming, we'll keep drinking them :) We hope you love this one as much as we do! The price is certainly right!

I think Bleu Blanc Thau at the sale price of $7.99 may be the best white value and one of the best overall value wines in the store...and in a world where bacon costs $12.99 at the grocery store value is what I am looking for!
What's up with the wine?
We found the Vivarés brothers from Cotes de Thau – you’ve probably not heard of it but it’s the hilly coastal part of Languedoc in Mediterranean France. They live in Pézenas, which you should visit someday because it’s the charming birthplace of France’s greatest playwright, Moliere. Robert Vivarés has a B&B with a fine restaurant and Paul travels the world for his business tasting a lot of wines. They needed a house wine that reflected the place where they grew up. So they blended Picpoul, Terret and Colombard from the hills around them and called it Bleu Blanc and its straight up silly value.
Happy Tuesday! When does the weekend start?

We taste A LOT of really bad inexpensive wine every year. If we find 4 or 5 wines under $15 each year that really sing, we consider that a huge success.
This is one of those wines that sings. Why, do you ask?
As the Foppiano family has been growing grapes in the Russian River Valley since 1896, it seems reasonable to slap that vintage on this wine. That’s particularly true because the wines of a century ago were field blends, amalgamations of various and sundry grapes planted throughout the North Coast vineyards. It’s only in the last half century that people have become fixated on varietally-specific wines, but not so much back then.
Today, the Foppianos have 160 planted acres; back then, not as much. But they grew a mix of what was cool then, and maybe what is still cool today: this is 67% Petite Sirah, 14% Carignane, 8% Barbera, 7% Mourvedre, 4% Zinfandel. Don’t let the grape blend give you the impression that this is some over the top, high octane wine. It’s more like the wines of that bygone era: soft, supple, fruity and with only moderate alcohols at 13.5 %. It’s aged for a year in American and French barrels. Like we say, a moderate touch.
We'll have it on the machines at all eight stores all weekend long so you can see for yourself!
Happy Thursday! And as always, THANK YOU for your business! We don't take it for granted.

This is only the second time we have ever been able to offer this wine at $14.99, and I'm not sure how to properly express my excitement that we were able to get this deal done (especially given the current operating environment!).
When the fine folks behind Kingstree Cabernet and Chardonnay, Marine Layer, Valravn etc. come to you and propose a deal like this on a wine you love you just back up the truck and let it rip...and that's exactly what we did!
So let's keep it short and sweet today, shall we? You guys know the wine, you guys love the wine, and now you've got till Sunday to buy it for a song.
Let's do this!

Finally...
Finally, after 6 long months of delays, our best selling white wine is rolling back into our stores this morning.
We found this gem at the world's largest wine trade show, ProWein, where so many of the world’s winemakers collect each spring in Germany. At Prowein we tasted and tasted and tasted (someone has to do it). We did all that tasting because you wanted us to find something so tasty, so refreshingly crisp (but still weighty enough to matter) and, dare we say it, a freaking value that it practically crawled into our luggage and said take me home.
White and Sea fit that mold for us - and I think you all seem to agree with our assessment. Up until October of last year it was our best selling white wine in 2021...then supply chain chaos kept it away until now.
What makes it so good?
It’s surprising that grapes like Sauvignon Blanc aren’t more widely planted in southern France, as they can be harvested fairly early to retain bright and citrusy acidity without really losing character or even complexity. So here they do only night harvests, and they keep fermentations at low temperatures, emphasizing the tropical side of the grape.
The wine also handles consumption at high velocity quite well - so with the warm weather now hopefully here for good, you may want to have a bottle handy :)
