Yes, if you grab a bottle of Cassandre, you're gonna be drinking one of the top white wine value finds of 2023. Maybe one of the tops of the 2020s....

It's 100% certified organic. 100% Vermentino (that's the grape). It's also 100% outrageously delicious.

What's up, you ask?

Olivier and Stéphanie Ramé took over Maison Ventenac from Stéphanie's parents over a decade ago and within a few years, they had obtained a Terra Vitis certification and converted to organic viticultural practices for their vineyard. Within Cabardès, a prime site in the ocean of vines that is Languedoc-Roussillon, the Ramés are growing many of the same grapes as their neighbors but using them to sometimes unusual ends. They call some of these wines “les Dissidents” which are “delicate blends concocted in jars of 150 or 500 litres, and in casks of 2,000 litres.” This one is 100% Vermentino (they call it Rolle there) and it has layers and layers of complexity and fruit.

Pro Tip - if drinking outdoors pour over a little bit of ice (I prefer pellet ice but to each his or her own) to get this stuff super cold and enjoy with abandon.

It’s been a minute since we’ve had a new wine from Priorat to offer you, but good things come to those who wait.
 
Back in November of last year the head of Gil Family Estates in Spain introduced us to a woman by the name of Sílvia Puig. Sílvia was looking to move some of her wine and Miguel Gil thought we would be good partners. She sent us her samples and two of the wines were absolutely lights out - including the one we are offering you today, the 2021 AIAIAI Priorat.
 
This winery is a tiny project started in 2008 by Silvia Puig in her small garage in one of the villages of Priorat, the site of Spain’s most intense wines. She was consulting for some of the more important wineries there, like Clos Figueras, and wanted to make wine in “limited quantities so that the artisan element is valued.” En Números Vermells remains a handcrafted producer, with the Aiaiai wine being blended from Garnacha, Cariñena and Syrah. "I have specialized in small productions for people who share my philosophy", she explains, so the wines are available only in a handful of markets. But they are classic Priorat: big, rich, expansive, almost as mineral driven as they are fruit-laden.
 
This happens to be one of the only times someone has quoted a price and we just took it. I honestly thought there was a typo based on the other comps that are out there.
 
We can offer you this wine for $24.99 per bottle. You can see the average reported price by all Vivino users online is $40.16 per bottle (that is globally!). Other US retailers have sold previous vintages “On Sale” for $41.99.
 
So if Priorat is your thing, and it is definitely mine, this is one of the best values we’ve had from the region in a long while.

What's the story behind the wine?

Throughout the last two centuries of winedom, French wine has been aged in French oak. Or has it? In the 19th century, French forests, planted for warships, were plentiful enough for barrels too. In the early 20th century, barrels made from Eastern European oak became more common, especially after WWI decimated French forests. But they were replanted with purpose; the barrel industry returned and has dominated the idea of top flight wine ever since. What's makes Les Peyrautins so good?
 
You have been told that Pinot Noir is the most finicky of grapes; indeed, it’s supposed to be the “heartbreak grape.” The statement is not false but it’s also not completely true. To make great Pinot Noir is bloody difficult and to do it consistently is virtually impossible, unless you’re in some famous (and very expensive) place. But that’s true of most grapes. It’s true that Pinot Noir grown in the wrong place is pretty dreadful, maybe more dreadful than most other grapes. But the middle ground has plenty of wealth to it – you need a friendly place for grape growing but not too friendly. With France’s Pays d’Oc, there are places where it’s easy to ripen grapes and areas that offer just enough challenge to coax Pinot Noir into an outrageous value - creating a fresh, fruity and delicious wine....and that's what we have here.

Les Peyrautins checks a lot of boxes for me. On the quality to price scale the wine is off the charts. The packaging is nice (when I serve it nobody would ever guess this bad boy was $9.99! 😁) It's just one of those wines where I feel confident when I open the bottle I am going to really enjoy the overall experience...and that always keeps me coming back!

So if you're like me, and in your weekly wine rotation you are looking for a) value but also b) delicious wine - this wine is your huckleberry!

Malbec may turn out to be an excellent tool for Languedoc Roussillon winemakers. Is it for sure? Not at all. Malbec is a southwestern France grape and a tertiary grape at that; Mediterranean France has little experience with it. But the region has elevation, so maybe we’re going to see more like this tasty little thing. let’s be clear about this: Malbec likes altitude. Why? No one really knows.

I know, I know, Zinfandel is the same grape as Italy’s Primitivo. But is it? Even the best Primitivo doesn’t have the fruitiness, the power, the sheer intensity of California’s best Zins. So, is it okay if I predict that Sauvignon Blanc becomes the world’s most widely planted grape in the next decade? In southern France, with the collection of hills, valleys, and plains rolling down to the Mediterranean, it thrives. In France, the grape is sometimes secondary - it’s the place that counts. The French label police have loosened up and they’re okay with Chardonnay being on this label. It matters if you’re close to the coast, or up in the mountains, and with a grape like Chardonnay, cooler, higher elevation sites are best. A third of the wine is barrel-fermented - the rest is in stainless steel, with enough lees-stirring to fatten up the wine and round it out.

When we learned that the winery behind white wine value superstar Bleu Blanc Thau also made a rosé, we had to try it. So we did...and it was amazing (these guys are good).

Then we found out we could retail it for $9.99 per bottle...and folks, this is a back up the truck type of situation if there ever was one!

The south of France has been home to a sea of vines for centuries, though its heyday was the late 19th century after the newly built railroad allowed shipments to fill the carafes of Parisian cafes. Cotes de Thau is gaining notoriety for its rosé wines grown beneath the former volcano of Agde, with a mix of garrigue, sand, nearby sea and lagoons. The Bleu Blanc Thau Rosé is a blend of Cinsault and Merlot made in a crisp, clean, even racy style of pink wine.

So if rosé is your thing (and in the summer it is definitely my thing), you'll want to jump on this bandwagon.

It's gonna be warm and sunny all weekend - let's do this!

This may be the toughest wine we carry to keep in stock right now.

Boulée-Cordot was already crushing it. The price is right (who doesn't love $9.99), the wine is delicious, and the package is great.

But its success went into hyperdrive when we put it in a Belle Glos Pinot Noir Blind Tasting as a ringer (this wine is not Pinot Noir) and it TIED Belle Glos for 3rd place 👀

When we originally stumbled upon this blend of Syrah and Alicante, we got a little more than excited. We're always looking for great value wines, but finding wine that tastes great for less than $9.99 is kinda like finding an old school restaurant that still serves amazing cheeseburgers for $3.00 and $5.00 with a milkshake and fries - they are out there, but you got to do some digging.

As France evolves into the modern world, there are times when it seems that they’ve merely arrived in the late 20th century. Blends like this one wouldn't have been seen only a few scant years ago. Instead, the wine would have been named after the place where it originated; perhaps the grapes would have been listed on the back label if they were noted at all. But somebody in France got the memo – the modern world wants more information, and the old place names, unless they’re the famous ones, don't mean much.

So basically even if we had seen this blend, we wouldn't have known we were drinking it, even if we were :) Syrah is planted throughout Mediterranean France, and has a strong reputation dating back to the mid-19th century when Bordeaux chateaux would blend a small amount into their wines to improve them. Alicante? It’s one of the rare Teinturier grapes, having red juice as well as red skins and in the right spots it can be powerful and juicy, not just inky. Together they make for a very modern, fascinating, if nontraditional, wine.

So Boulée is back in stock - lets see how long it lasts this time!

This White Burgundy Has Returned For The First Time Since 2021!

2022 Tatiana Guillot Mâcon Villages

Tatiana Guillot Mâcon Villages is a White Burgundy (100% Chardonnay) that took our stores by storm during the pandemic. Then, as quickly as it swooped in, it went away. The Domaine decided not to make any of the Mâcon in 2021 due to a terrible vintage in Burgundy, and the last time we had this wine in stock was December of 2021.

Well....I am happy to report that after 18 months of waiting the 2022 vintage has arrived, and it is as delicious as ever. Even better, after price increases across the board in Burgundy we are still able to offer this Mâcon for $14.99 per bottle.

I'm not trying to sound hyperbolic - but $14.99 for Mâcon Villages is basically a unicorn at this point. I did a search for all Mâcon Villages wines on Wine.com for under $15 this morning and got back ZERO.

Outside of price, what makes this wine so special?

Macon Villages was once a bigger deal, or at least it was once a wine that absolutely every restaurant had to pour by the glass. Some of the biggest names in the business started their careers in this airy, Chardonnay-laden territory (you know, like Georges Duboeuf, for one).

In the climate change era, Macon seems to be morphing from light and slightly generic to richer and even slightly buttery. But only slightly. Remember that Chardonnay in France is almost always more about the minerals than the butter; Macon is clean and crisp and tangy. Yet, it is increasingly weighty.

That's what you get here, and it's really something. The Guillot Family has been making Chardonnay in Burgundy for generations and while we’re not quite to California richness yet, who knows?

Every region has its champions, even if it’s unfair to single out particular producers when the ancient Sauvignon Blanc area has so many heroes. Pabellón cruised into Top 20 best selling wines of 2022 and we only mentioned it in an e-mail one time. Once. That means the people that were buying it kept buying it over, and over, and over again. I think they love it as much as I do.

We even added it as a ringer recently in the Caymus Cabernet blind tasting and once customer said "If this isn't Caymus, I want a case..." 👀

It makes sense this wine is so delicious. 

The powers behind Bodegas Lo Nuevo need no introduction to our customers; we have followed them for several years now. Why? Because they have a remarkable set of vineyards in many of the sexiest parts of Spain, and because they always bring some crazy value to it.

This is a fairly new project for them, but like others they own, it consists not of a large family holding but is a collection of small plots, each planted 15 to 60 years ago. This is the most elevated region of Rioja, the Alavesa, where calcareous clay soils necessitate a reliance upon Tempranillo and where winemakers Bartolomé Abellán and Sara García rest this 100% Tempranillo in French oak for 10 months.

Maybe the breakout value star for us in the last three years has been Chazeaux. We sent you an e-mail about it one time in 2020 and you all clearly like what you tasted the first time you bought it. You came back for more and more in 2021 and 2022 to the tune of over 45,000 bottles (that's a lot of love!)

That kind of sales velocity matched with global supply issues sent the wine out of stock over and over again - but we think their US Importer finally has it figured out!

Beuchottes hails from the Languedoc-Roussillon, a region of France where Pinot Noir can prosper, but only in the cooler spots. As you have probably guessed, the components for this little gem come from some of the coolest areas in the region. That said, the main goal here was to marry a traditional and elegant French style of winemaking while highlighting some of the vibrant complexity you find in larger reds from the Languedoc - and Beuchottes accomplishes that in spades.

Things I love include Pinot Noir, and great wines under $9.99. This is in my wheelhouse!!

We've had several wines come back in stock over the last two weeks, and this is the one people have been asking about the most.

Mazet de la Palombiere (we just call it Mazet), one of the hottest selling Cabernets of the last 3 years is finally back in stock!

It almost feels like the winery can't keep this stuff on hand, so we are just going to continue to order as much as we can, as often as we can!

What was the deal with the wine?

We just said that while yes, this wine is insanely delicious for the price, this has to be one of the coolest bottles and packages I have seen on a wine in a long time.

The Cabardès region is part of the larger Languedoc-Roussillon AOC that for decades has provided cheap wine for Parisian cafes and big international companies to bring to global markets. But there is more here and the world is finally waking up to that. The soils are limestone and even gravel in spots; the right grapes hang from old, even venerable vines, and perhaps most importantly going forward, the landscape is dry and windy enough to allow for non-chemical winegrowing. Nicolas Vellas is one of the old-line guys who understands that and who has been buying selected sites to grow his Les Naturels de Nicolas Vellas wine portfolio. For four generations his family has collected great but forgotten vineyards. It’s time people started paying attention – that’s easy because at these prices, they’re easy to notice.

It is full of dark berry flavors to offset its tough guy tannins. This is BIG wine for little money and is basically the wine equivalent to Patrick Swayze in “Roadhouse.” Best movie EVER.

Le Cabas Sauvignon Blanc is back!!

Aside from the awesome packaging here (I'm a sucker for these bottles with the glass stoppers), this white wine stopped me in my tracks the first time I tried it. Over the last few years it has pretty much become the house white wine at our place, and every time I pull it out of the fridge and see this label, I think of this song...and that puts me in a great mood!

What makes Le Cabas so awesome?

Gascony ain’t just the Three Musketeers, though they have a place in our hearts as well. More than anything, Gascony is foie gras, delicious plums and apricots, rich dinners with Armagnac to follow. But the white grapes grown here are not just for great brandy, they have always been consumed as wine too and the last decade or so has seen an embrace of clean, cold winemaking to preserve the aromas of otherwise neutral grapes like Ugni Blanc or Folle Blanche. It’s also seen new plantings of Sauvignon Blanc, a grape that requires no heroic measures to reveal its aromatic riches. What’s fun here is that these same winemaking methods generate something bright and vibrant but without much resemblance to other such Sauvignon Blancs (I’m looking at you, New Zealand), many of which have begun to seem like self-caricature. This one is comfortably itself, needing only an ice bucket and a big glass.

So if you're with me, and end of school has you thinking "Summertimes Calling Me" (or maybe you like this one too?), then grab yourself a bottle!

Let's be honest. The first wine I bought a six pack of to get ready for the weekend was Larme at $9.99 per bottle.

In a world of seemingly never ending price increases, I would challenge anyone to find me a more delicious, more beautiful rosé for $9.99 per bottle. It simply doesn't exist. It's almost like I don't want the wine to get too popular because I need this deal to be available in the future!

Why is the wine so special?

Well, if you stick around the wine business long enough, you’ll have seen it all. Where once wine coolers were cooler than Liebfraumilch, now hard seltzer is hot (served cold). White Zin was once de rigeur, though it was never French; it was from the good ol’ US of A. But then that became too sweet and the category died. Or seemed to. Because then rosé rose up like a zombie eager for fresh meat, though the current iteration of the pink stuff is more often French than not. Provence is the epicenter of it and the French have figured out how we like it: dry, pale pink, light and refreshing.
