Extreme weather of late has been particularly disruptive to the great Sauvignon Blanc wines of the Loire Valley. Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, once ubiquitous on shelves and wine lists, are getting hard to find today.....and if you do happen to find them, they are much harder to afford.

That is why when we stumble upon a producer like Antoine Lafarge and his incredible stable of affordable yet high quality wines, we almost can't contain ourselves.

One of the best examples of his talent? His 2022 Pouilly-Fumé Sauvignon Blanc.

- Same taste as Sancerre? Oh yeah.
- Same grape as Sancerre? 100%
- Same price as Sancerre? This is where things get exciting

Like all of Antoine’s wines, this is organically farmed and skillfully crafted. The region now offers powerful and fruity Sauvignon Blanc, not at all like those of New Zealand. People lament that climate change has altered wines, but Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé are often fruitier and more fun to drink as the weather heats up. And just like Sancerre, the soils in Pouilly Fumé are a mix of Kimmeridgian limestone and the even more famed soil, silex. Silex deserves its fame; it provides tension and complexity to the aromatic Sauvignon Blanc grape.

All of this goodness in one bottle and then shipped across the pond, and we can bring it to you at the lowest price ever offered in the United States - $19.99 per bottle.

So if Sancerre is your thing, or Sauvignon Blanc is your thing or just great white wine is your thing - this is a run, don't walk type of situation. Why? Because even though we found this diamond, quantities are still scarce.

So let's get while the gettin' is good!

Happy Thursday all!

Over the last four or five decades the generic term of Cotes du Rhone Villages has given way to a collection of villages that stand above the others; Gigondas was the first and Sablet is now included among those that are allowed to append their village name on to the label. Comprised of Grenache and Syrah, these are wines that represent the ever improving fortunes of the southern Rhone Valley, and with every year, they creep closer and closer to the character and style of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, only at much more affordable prices.

For me, I LOVE Chateauneuf du Pape. LOVE it. I wish I could drink it all the time....but like $40+ bottles of wine are not in my "everyday" wine budget. That is why wines like this get me fired up. This wine has all the hallmarks of great Chateauneuf - without the Chateauneuf price tag.

So I'll keep it short and sweet today. If either of these things apply to you:

- I love Chateauneuf or Rhone Red Wine
- I love extremely high quality wine for less than $15 that also happens to be lowest price in the entire US

I would give this a try. I'm in for 6, and I'm drinking one tonight!

We have some new wines that just arrived from Langtry Farms Vineyard & Winery and as part of that deal we were able to get another pop of Lillie's Collection for you at $9.99 per bottle.

There are two things to know here: one of them is that this wine for $9.99 represents some pretty unreal value and a is a real testament to what Northern California is still capable of in terms of affordable yet delicious red and white wine.

The other thing to know?

So there was a wine made by a Guenoc Winery and Langtry Winery partnership called "Lillie's Collection Victorian Claret" for a California wine powerhouse called BevMo.

Guenoc and Langtry decide to split up. Langtry owns the trademark to "Lillie's Collection". Guenoc owns the trademark to "Victorian Claret".

Potential problem? Indeed.

Langtry continues producing the wine for BevMo but has to put "Red Wine" on the label instead of "Victorian Claret". BevMo says that doesn't work - now they don't want the wine anymore. (notice how on Bevo's website it still says "Victorian Claret 👀)

...one thing leads to another and next thing you know we get to offer you this wine at an absolutely silly price. Like we've said many times, the wine business is a weird place.

Langtry Farms was originally founded back in the 19th Century by entertainer Lillie Langtry, who purchased 4,200 acres in Northern California around 1888. Today, Langtry Estate makes up over 21,000 acres and is one of the largest contiguous land holdings in all of California.

Their Petite Sirah, which makes up the base of this blend, is one of the best Petite values in the North Coast. Both powerful and well balanced, it's a prime example of what stunning values can come out of the North Coast when left at the hands of a master like winemaker Eric Stine.

So $9.99 through Sunday - you guys know what to do.

I know what I'm drinking tonight!

There is nothing worse than buying a super expensive wine, sitting on it to let it “age” for a few years, and then when you open it the wine is terrible.

On the flip side of that coin, I absolutely love when some $20-$30 wines just keep getting better with age, and really outperform their price point. 2004 Mas Doix Salanques is still one of those wines for me. I bought it for $25 per bottle and almost 20 years later the wine is still absolutely crazy delicious.

The wine we have for you today will be one of those superstars, in my humble opinion.

At one of the world’s largest wine trade shows in Paris back in February we tasted through hundreds and hundreds of wines over several days (someone has to do it 😂).

We found Domaine des Florets “Alliance”, a Grenache and Syrah blend from Gigondas, at a random tasting station, and honestly after sharing 3 bottles with different friends over the last few days, I think it may be the best of the best we bought on that trip.

I tasted this wine next to 2010 Marcoux Vieilles Vignes Chateauneuf du Pape last week (and that Marcoux was one of my all timers and nearly 5x the price of this wine) and I think the Alliance was better.

The history of this estate I can’t really figure out. As far as I can tell this guy Jérôme Rathle bought the estate in 2021 after making a small fortune in sustainability services, and completely revamped the whole operation. Apparently he knows how to make wine as well, because his first attempt out of the gate is insane.

As with any small operation - the only issue is getting your hands on lots of product. We liked this wine a lot, and after several weeks of back and forth, we bought 30% of this man’s entire production…but that is only 280 cases of wine.

I honestly think anyone who drinks red wine will love this stuff, and we could not be more excited to bring it to you.

I’m in for 2 cases - one to drink now and one hopefully to try and age (if I can hold off). My guess is I’ll buy a third right before we run out, just so I have a nice stash 😂

I know what I'm drinking tonight!

What happens to Chardonnay grapes when you pair Burgundy soil conditions with California weather in a region with affordable land?

A super Chardonnay (like as in superman not just super...ok, you get what I'm saying) is born.

What is happening here?

When the French decided to build the Canal du Midi, they unsurprisingly chose a portion of the Pays d’Oc that is flatter and less mountainous than much of the regional landscape. Indeed, the Canal’s construction saw some smoothing out of the countryside and in some portions, they’ve created the conditions for low-lying vineyards that were cooled by Mediterranean breezes.

Since they’re growing Chardonnay in this site, it helps that the ground is mostly calcareous marl, the sort of well-drained limestone and clay that typifies the Burgundy region far away. The climate is different, needless to say, but not so very different from sunny California, and the wine has some of that same buttery character that West Coast Chardonnay exemplifies.

So yeah, we've got a new arrival, and it's a Super Chardonnay.

Do you know what you're drinking tonight?

We've been waiting on this one.

This may go down, dare I say it will go down, as one of the best sub $15 red wines we have ever offered. No hyperbole. This stuff is just that special.

The first time I tasted this 100% Grenache from Colline du Bonnet I thought it tasted like a dead ringer for one of my favorite wines of all time, Alban Grenache. I'm not kidding, not even a little bit, and just for price comparison Alban Grenache, any vintage, lowest price in the US right now is $89 per bottle 👀

So how does this happen?

For most wine people, Languedoc-Roussillon is still a monolithic expanse of undifferentiated vineyards – but, as in that cartoon with the two babies peering into their diapers, “there is a difference!” Some areas see more sea influence than mountain influence; some sites are windier, and some are decidedly hotter. Colline’s Grenache vines are baked in the sun around the town of Cébazon in eastern Languedoc, and still enjoy enough of the Mediterranean breezes to retain some acidity. The winemaking is more traditional than modern (cold soaking the grapes for two days is still new thinking) but otherwise the grapes stay on the skins in vats for at least a month; then see long aging in cement cubes. It's old school winemaking that produces extreme value results.

Believe me, or don't...but if you drink any type of medium to full bodied red wine, you're gonna want to taste a bottle of this stuff.

Clearly I'm a convert - and I know what I'm drinking tonight!

Based on the number of cases that have gone out the door simply to people who had pending orders waiting on this wine to return, today could be the biggest day we've seen in 17 years of doing this.

Just since TUESDAY of this week, 293 cases of this wine have gone out the door...and we haven't really even told that many people about it 👀

So what's up here?

Easily our most popular product the last 3 years has been Cape Charles Cabernet. A label developed with Baron Ziegler (he's kind of a big deal, you can read more about him here) to take advantage of the high end left over juice, the results have been unreal. The label itself was lent to the project by artist Peter Curling - he's also kind of a big deal and you can read more about him here.

We started with Kamen Moon Mountain juice which sold out in just a few weeks. We then doubled down with 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from Leonetti in Washington State. After the Leonetti success we told Baron the next one had to be huge…and he delivered.

This 100% Cassata Vineyard Cabernet is the best wine he's released yet, and I'm not sure it is even close.

Where / what is the Cassata Vineyard?

Rancho Los Guilicos is the historical name for the Cassata family’s estate in prime Sonoma Valley territory. It’s part of the original Mexican land grant from the 1830s, administered by General Mariano Vallejo, and offered to settlers who would attempt to tame this wilderness.

Vallejo gave the grant to his sister-in-law who sold it in 1850 to William Hood; the local peak is named after him. It went through a few other hands before it was bought by Judge Carroll Cook, Superior Court Judge of San Francisco. This is when it becomes known as “Rancho El Nido” or “The Nest” and when Jack London and his love for the Valley of the Moon, as well as the Judge’s expertise with cocktails, enters the picture. London’s ranch was at the edge of the property; and Cook planted grapes to make wine.

There were only three owners through the 20th century. The Cassata family bought El Nido in 2002, and have since been dedicated to restoring its glory through bio-sustainable farming. They’ve even re-planted olive trees to make olive oil. They’ve focused the vineyard choices on the traditional areas and the grapes that belong there (like the Cabernet family) as well as grapes that have helped build its fame (like Zinfandel and Alicante Bouschet). This is the beating heart of historical Sonoma wine country!

As for prices - you’ll find Cassata Vineyard Cabernet anywhere from $53 to $105 per bottle. As far as I can tell, NEVER has this vineyard ever had wine in the 21st century that has been priced under $25.00.

So ignore at your own risk. A case is coming home with me, and we're starting the weekend off right 😁

TGIF!

Mid summer of 2022 we tasted a white wine that was utterly delicious and the price was outrageous.

So, of course, we ordered a ton of it.

5 months later the Grand Moulin Red showed up at our doorstep.

Don't get me wrong, we love the red wine - but the white wine is what we wanted. The white wine is the show stopper....and the white wine was still in France 😂.

Fast forward 7 more months and the Grand Moulin Blanc has  finally arrived, and we can't wait for you guys to try this one.

What's the deal here?

Within the vast Roussillon-Languedoc are some sweet spots – Corbières is undoubtedly one of the most important whether for red or white wines. But don’t expect Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc to prosper; here Grenache Blanc and Rolle are the dominant vins blancs. You might know Rolle better in its Italian iteration as Vermentino, one of the more fascinating and textured of white wines. Here the two grapes are made more floral and exotic by a shot of Roussanne, that temperamental grape of the northern Rhone.  Grown on the middle terraces below the Orbieu River, this is both full and tangy.

Is a bottle of this coming home with me tonight? Indeed it is!

Let's do this people!

Having just taken the family to the beach for summer vacation, it really astonishes me how much things continue to cost nowadays.

Like is every glass of wine now $15?

That's why I'm glad wines like Rosabelle exist. We took some with us on vacation (along with some Swimbad for the beach), and I honestly I need more delicious $10 wine in my life!

For rosé it doesn't matter as much what grapes you use, just the process. Though they need to be picked early and when they’re still tangy and tart. For Rosabelle that means Grenache and Cinsault. These days a paler style of rosé prevails, set by Provençal producers and Rosabelle is cut from that cloth.

Added bonus here? According to Vivino the average price paid for Rosabelle out there is $17.08 - and you're getting it for $9.99 per bottle.

SCORE!

If you’re into white burgundy (or any Chardonnay for that matter), you’re gonna want some of this.

On a recent buying trip back in February we sat down with Olivier Ramé to taste the latest lineup at Maison Ventenac. During that meeting one of the wines we tasted stopped us in our tracks. It was a 100% Petite Arvine called Le Batard. It was also one of the best wines we tasted the entire trip.

Ventenac is an exceptional 100% organic property. Some of the wine produced here we believe represents some of the best under $50 wine you can buy - period.

Using the grape Petite Arvine is a new project, with the wine called a ‘bastard’ on the label because Petite Arvine is a Swiss grape that few grow in France. The wine is a complete dead ringer for high end white burgundy (and I’m talking the stuff north of $100 per bottle). It is tense and minerally, fermented with native yeasts and no sulfur in Italian terracotta amphorae. It adds color, texture and complexity to this otherwise simple and refreshing grape.

My first thought after tasting it was thinking this must be what people feel like when they say stuff like “I remember when Montrachet was only $30…” and stuff like that.

The only real problem here? 2,400 bottles or 200 cases is the entire annual production.

So of course we bought 112 of them.

And after it's only been here a few weeks - there are only 35 cases left for all 8 stores. Just 420 bottles.

These will sell out today, so get while the gettin' is good!

We saved the second part of our Newton deal for today, as it is possibly the best Cabernet deal we've seen this year - and honestly one of the best in a long time.

Much like the Skyside Chardonnay, I have to say I have no idea how long it is going to last, and Total Wine has already lost their minds once this week so there is no telling what is going to happen at this point, so let's get while the gettin' is good!!

As we told you earlier this week, Newton’s name at one time was spoken in reverent tones as, alongside Pride Mountain, Pahlmeyer, Duckhorn and a few others; this is where Merlot excelled. But then people started treating Merlot like that awkward cousin who has too much to drink and then starts talking politics at the Thanksgiving table and great work stretching back to the 1980s was somehow forgotten.

So imagine when they shifted their focus from Merlot and moved to the more popular Cabernet Sauvignon grape. The results were a great $25 Cabernet that sold like wildfire.

At $10.99 per bottle it's tough for me to put into words how insane this deal is in the wine world, especially without sounding hyperbolic. So I'll end this Friday morning by saying if Cabernet is your thing, this is a back up the truck type of situation. Anytime I can buy a Ferrari for the price of a used rental car, I'm gonna do that.

Maybe this is one time where it actually isn't too good to be true!!

TGIF!

This is not your grandfather's Chablis.

Chablis is forever sundered from its traditions by climate change; that is now inarguable. But, like Sancerre, or German wines, or some other places, that’s not necessarily tragic. Instead, it means that Chablis is fruitier and easier, less the mineral and tart lemon balm than something fascinatingly generous and still mineral-laden. Old vine Chardonnay in Chablis will still give the limestone-tangy acidity that the region is famed for; but with more gentleness and ripe fruits.

It's basically like you're getting the best of both worlds. A top flight producer that is giving you all the old school flavor with a little bit of new world charm. (oh, and the lowest online price in the US!)

It also is an incredible wine to be drinking while you're trying to beat the heat!

$9.99 For Newton Chardonnay? It's never happened before...until today!

Newton Skyside (formerly known as "Red Label") Chardonnay is an iconic California Chardonnay...and if you read the subject line, this is the first time we've ever been able to see this wine at this price in 17 years of doing business.

At this price, I anticipate this could be the fastest selling wine of all time for us...

Given how insane this deal is, I have to say I have no idea how long it is going to last, and Total Wine is going to totally lose their minds about this and complain, so let's get while the gettin' is good!!

Once upon a time (pre-Sideways days) Newton’s name was spoken in reverent tones as, alongside Pride Mountain, Pahlmeyer, Duckhorn and a few others; this is where Merlot excelled. But then people started treating Merlot like that awkward cousin who has too much to drink and then starts talking politics at the Thanksgiving table and great work stretching back to the 1980s was somehow forgotten.

Newton, like those others, has survived it, and besides, they make other tasty wines like this Chardonnay blended from fat Napa County juice and leaner, more structured Sonoma County lots.

Enjoy this one!!!

Maybe THE "if you know, you know" rosé of 2023 is La Culottée.

This 100% Caladoc wine (what is Caladoc? It's a hybrid grape that is a cross between Grenache and Malbec) is barrel-fermented, though it is still recognizably rosé in style.

Needless to say, barrel-fermented rosé is anomalous anywhere, much less in southern France. The barrels are over-sized, and the wine has no added sulfur or added yeast. Dry, clean and perfect when served chilled on a sunny day, just like you would the rest of the rosés you’re slamming this summer.

Things I love about this wine include:
- The grape is unqiue and cool
- Organic and no added sulfites for those of you into such things
- The color is insanely gorgeous, and the picture does not do it justice
- The wine itself is delicious
- Lowest price in the US

Only 2,000 bottles were made!

We're telling you, but don't let too many people in on this...let's keep it between us...if you know, you know 😁

I know what I'm drinking tonight!

137 cases went out the door the minute the new vintage landed...

The 2020 Moulin St. Jean became a best selling wine for us last year and we only mentioned it in an e-mail one time.

How does that happen? It happens when the wine brings the absolute thunder in terms of quality and price.

Well, the new vintage has arrived and you all have bought 137 cases before we've even been able to notify anyone about it!!

What is going on here?

The large and sometimes overlooked (but never under-consumed) Languedoc enjoys southern French weather, more Mediterranean than western European. Winemaker/owner Frédéric Bousquet has vineyards that alternate with the critically aromatic scrubland French vintners call “garrigue”. The region also benefits from the Mediterranean climate, which offers a combination of dry heat and a cooling influence from the Atlantic.

Because of the wind called “Cers”, it’s never too hot in the vineyards, and the breeze prevents vine diseases caused by moisture. While most GSMs are topped off with Mourvèdre, Bousquet uses a lesser known grape called Marselan, perhaps typical in the area but hardly ever seen on its own. Think of a dose of red currant jam along with those other two grapes.

All I can tell you is....I know what I'm drinking tonight!

TGIF!

I've gotten no less than 267,422 e-mails since the middle of June asking if Larme will be on sale one last time during summer for $9.99. I replied back to 267,421 mentioning it probably will during our Labor Day sale and the general consensus was "we can't wait that long - it is too hot to wait..." 😂

I get it. It's our best selling rosé of all time...the wine is delicious...and at the sale price of $9.99 it is just a silly value.

Well, we are in the business of pretty much doing whatever you guys want (just like with the Belleplane from yesterday), so here we go!

$9.99 per bottle. 5 days only. You can grab yourself a small stockpile to make it until these crazy temps go away and for your one last jaunt to the beach.

Why is the wine so special?

Well, if you stick around the wine business long enough, you’ll have seen it all. Where once wine coolers were cooler than Liebfraumilch, now hard seltzer is hot (served cold). White Zin was once de rigeur, though it was never French; it was from the good ol’ US of A. But then that became too sweet and the category died. Or seemed to. Because then rosé rose up like a zombie eager for fresh meat, though the current iteration of the pink stuff is more often French than not. Provence is the epicenter of it and the French have figured out how we like it: dry, pale pink, light and refreshing.

Larme has all this and more in spades.

So lets get to it!

Happy Wednesday!

We worked a deal for the Belleplane Chardonnay at $9.99 as part of our July 4th Sale and lots of people were asking - can we do it with the red?!?!?!

Well, ask and you shall recieve. The winery gave us the green light this week to run this special so through this Sunday, you can grab Belleplane Red Wine for $9.99.

I'm not sure I want to get too deep into the weeds here as to how much thunder this wine brings for this price. At $15 is an absolute stunner. For $9.99? It's tough to put into words.

We are constantly on the lookout for the next great value wine. You know, the stuff under $15 that really wows you.

As we have told you before, this is a wine that makes you do a double take. You take one sip and you're kinda like "Oh, hello there...". Belleplane Red (and the Chardonnay for that matter), did that for us. It was one that we all taste at the same time and everyone kinda looks around at each other without saying anything to try and see if everybody is thinking "You gettin' what I'm gettin'...?"

When it comes to red grapes, there are many in the Languedoc-Roussillon, an area that encompasses almost the entirety of Mediterranean France. But there are a few pockets of an unusual grape called Alicante Bouschet, one of only a handful of grapes that actually has colored juice (as opposed to the color coming from the skins). With 70% Alicante and 30% Syrah, and a half year or so in barrel, this wine is powerful, dense and chewy.

I'm in for a case. I can't have enough good $10 red wine in the wine fridge 😂

I know what I'm drinking tonight!

Much like the Sombrero Cabernet from earlier this week, Vellas Sauvignon Blanc took off last year like a rocket ship.

Only issue? It was impossible to keep in stock 👀

Domaine Vellas has fun with its labels but don’t think less of their wines for that.  They know their business, with sixty vineyards totaling 250 acres under their control, the character and value is known by one and all.

Les Naturels Sauvignon Blanc is blended from vineyards in the southern part of the vast and crucial Languedoc-Roussillon region and, if the Languedoc-Roussillon is somehow overlooked due to its ubiquity, it’s important to understand that some of France’s oldest vines are planted along its limestone slopes, many on vertiginous hillsides or nearly overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. This 100% organic wine is not some leftover souvenir from a producer’s vain attempt to create some over priced Sancerre clone. This is made to be seductive, slippery southern French Sauvignon Blanc.

What pairs perfectly with 95+ degree heat?? You know it!

Let's do this!

Since Waccamaw Proprietary Red was released in 2014 by the fine folks at Valkyrie, we have been able to sell it at this price just 4 other times. That means this is just the 5th time in almost a decade - and they have told us this will be the only time in 2023 you will be able to grab it for this price.

The winery released 250 cases at this price for the entire state (that's just 30 cases per store!). There is an internal bet if the cases even last until Sunday. (My guess is Saturday afternoon at 3:15pm - price is right rules!)

We'll keep it short and sweet today people! This is a "if you know, you know" situation! 😁

As always, thank you for your support! It is an honor and pleasure to continue to serve you.

Sometimes a wine just hits right, and takes off like a rocket ship. That was Sombrero Cabernet in 2022.

The wine arrived in May and through October it was literally walking itself out the door. We tried to order more, but apparently we were not the only people in the world having this success with the wine, and there was no more to be had!

Well, a long 9 months later, a container just arrived with a new shipment of Sombero, and we are ready for the madness.

What do you need to know about this wine?

First things first - Nicolas Vellas is one of the hottest winemakers in France right now.

Over four generations of winemaking, the Vellas family has slowly assembled a strong group of properties in Languedoc and Roussillon (Mediterranean France). In beautiful sites like Mas du Pont (near Montpellier) they have created not only a vast set of vineyards but also farmlands, bull breeding, equestrian centers, olive groves and more. They pull their Cabernet from areas such as Costiere de Nimes, Coteau Varois, Oc, Saint-Guilhem, Grès, Saint Drézery, Muscat de Lunel, Languedoc, Pic St. Loup and Faugères. With Cabernet spread out across these sunny and Mediterranean climes, ripeness and aromatics are both in strong supply.

So to recap:
1) One of the best winemakers in France right now
2) 100% Cabernet
3) Crazy Value
