If you stick around the wine business long enough, you’ll have seen it all. Where once wine coolers were cooler than Liebfraumilch, now hard seltzer is hot (served cold). White Zin was once de rigeur, though it was never French; it was from the good ol’ US of A. But then that became too sweet and the category died. Or seemed to. Because then rosé rose up like a zombie eager for fresh meat, though the current iteration of the pink stuff is more often French than not. The south of France has been home to a sea of vines for centuries, though its heyday was the late 19th century after the newly built railroad allowed shipments to fill the carafes of Parisian cafes. Cotes de Thau is gaining notoriety for its rosé wines grown beneath the former volcano of Agde, with a mix of garrigue, sand, nearby sea and lagoons. This is a blend of Cinsault and Merlot made in a crisp, clean, even racy style of pink wine.

I know, I know, Zinfandel is the same grape as Italy’s Primitivo. But is it? Even the best Primitivo doesn’t have the fruitiness, the power, the sheer intensity of California’s best Zins. We like to shop in the Languedoc-Roussillon; it’s a place in Mediterranean France that has been important for more than a century but, despite the noise about inexpensive Bordeaux wines, remains the place to shop for value. To most, the Languedoc is a large scale region with small scale ambitions. You have been told that Pinot Noir is the most finicky of grapes; indeed, it’s supposed to be the “heartbreak grape.” The statement is not false but it’s also not completely true. To make great Pinot noir is bloody difficult and to do it consistently is virtually impossible, unless you’re in some famous place. But that’s true of most grapes. It’s true that Pinot noir grown in the wrong place is pretty dreadful, maybe more dreadful than most other grapes. But the middle ground has plenty of wealth to it – you need a friendly place for grape growing but not too friendly. With France’s Pays d’Oc, there are places where it’s easy to ripen grapes and areas that offer just enough challenge to coax Pinot Noir into showing its friendly and compelling side. This is an ideal example.

More than a half century ago Viognier was forgotten; near extinct. In the 1980s things blew up, with acreages quintupling. There were a few successes, but most just didn't do justice to the grape. When the French decided to build the Canal du Midi, they unsurprisingly chose a portion of the Pays d’Oc that is flatter and less mountainous than much of the regional landscape. Gascony ain't just the Three Musketeers, though they have a place in our hearts as well. More than anything, Gascony is foie gras, delicious plums and apricots, rich dinners with Armagnac to follow. But the white grapes grown here are not just for great brandy, they have always been consumed as wine too and the last decade or so has seen an embrace of clean, cold winemaking to preserve the aromas of otherwise neutral grapes like Ugni Blanc or Folle Blanche. It's also seen new plantings of Sauvignon Blanc, a grape that requires no heroic measures to reveal its aromatic riches. Whats fun here is that these same winemaking methods generate something bright and vibrant but without much resemblance to other such Sauvignon Blancs (I'm looking at you, New Zealand), many of which have begun to seem like self-caricature. This one is comfortably itself, needing only an ice bucket and a big glass.

We don’t often tell you about Chilean Chardonnay. If we’re being honest, we don’t really tell you a lot about Chilean wine. This is actually the only one we currently carry. In our search for the highest quality products at the world’s best prices, a lot of the stuff coming out of Chile tends to miss the mark. Not this wine. Not by a long shot.
 
Ever since the Casablanca region popped up on our radar, Chardonnay has been often good, but rarely great. This may be the best example of why some Chilean Chardonnay deserves your attention; it has some of the buttery character of California Chardonnay but it’s far more balanced and citrusy than 90% of California’s output.
 
Single vineyard Chardonnay aged in French oak and scoring north of 96 points for less than $35 - as far as I can tell - simply doesn’t exist anywhere. So take from that what you will…

There is no question anymore.

Belcoop Red and White have become two of the most successful value wines we have picked up in recent years...and part of that success involved a sale price we negotiated with the supplier last year, allowing us to sell this wine at $7.99 two different times.

Well, it's been almost 8 months since we were last able to get this deal rolling, but we are finally back in action, and it feels so good!

All I can tell you is this - at $9.99 these wines deliver the goods. At $7.99 per bottle? From across the ocean?  Sometimes I have a hard time understanding how things like this even exist!! A hotel in Dallas last week charged me $15 for a yogurt. In a world where that happens, Belcoop seems like breath of fresh air!

What's up with the wines?

Well the white wine is Grenache Blanc, a white mutation of Grenache Noir, and that grape varietal is a work in progress only because the consumer is still discovering it. Producers long ago realized its potential for crisp white wines that are so much more than merely crisp. With enough sunshine, Grenache Blanc can develop weight and power, not quite Chardonnay but no light white either. In truth, it’s not wholly a white wine in its density, befitting its kinship with the major grape of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The wine is fermented like Chardonnay in some ways, though the stainless steel variety; its lees are stirred in the tank, creating greater richness and texture, and Grenache Blanc is very happy that way.

and the Red?

The massive Pays d’Oc, or the country of the “Oc” language (people spoke that in the south before they spoke French), covers the greater part of Mediterranean France. After the railroad was built, linking the south to Paris, wines of the Languedoc filled the carafes of Parisian bistros, and they still do today. But the last century has seen vast improvements to the wines that once were built only for value. Technical know-how learned from Rhone Valley producers is applied to these gems: flash pasteurization for part of the crop helps deliver vibrant fruit and rich flavors, much as it does for some famed names in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. What all that delivers is a delicious red wine that layers on the complexity and richness you want in a full bodied red wine, with almost no harsh edges. 

These wines actually remind me a lot of the house wines you get in the local french villages - endlessly quaffable, super affordable and they had never given you a headache (well, unless you drink the whole bottle but that's like a whole different thing 😂)

I also wanted to comment on how much I love that I can buy wine like this for $7.99. I went to a restaurant for lunch yesterday and they tried to charge me $21 for a Cheeseburger and then an extra $6 for a side of fries. I'd rather just buy 3 bottles of SWIMBAD 😂

What do we know about SWIMBAD Rosé? 

- The wine is delicious, and at this price point, it is right in my budget sweet spot.
- The PET bottle is perfect for all things summertime. It can't break (I literally tested it and threw one across the parking lot - and yes some people gave me a look 😳), and it fits perfectly in a cooler for the beach, lake or right by the pool.
- It also fits well in beach bags, swimsuit pockets, and in a koozie (yeah, I tried it...you never know, right?)

How does a wine become the #15 best selling wine in the entire store so far in 2024 and we have not even mentioned in a newsletter once?

It happens when people try it, and then keep buying it over and over and over again. 

Have your friends been keeping it a secret?!?!

What's the story behind the wine?

Throughout the last two centuries of winedom, French wine has been aged in French oak. Or has it? In the 19th century, French forests, planted for warships, were plentiful enough for barrels too. In the early 20th century, barrels made from Eastern European oak became more common, especially after WWI decimated French forests. But they were replanted with purpose; the barrel industry returned and has dominated the idea of top flight wine ever since. Yet, American oak is crucial to many other wine regions: Spain, Australia, the U.S., maybe even Silver Oak (they love that vanilla smell). So this is a southern French Cab with American oak’s lashing of coconut and sawdust – the classic aromas of American oak barrels.

I honestly can’t tell you why there is not more noise about Round Pond wines. They’re legitimately serious Napa wines. It’s a second-generation wine estate in Rutherford with more than 350 acres of central Napa Valley vineyards, along with 5 acres of organic gardens, 12 acres of olive orchards, and one of the only two olive mills in the region, all from a family dedicated to sustainable farming and production. Before the winery opened in 1983, they used their substantial vineyard lands to supply many other, more celebrated wineries (all the big names you know).

This blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot, 2% Syrah offers the best possible example of what Round Pond is accomplishing that is so incomparable and indescribable.

THE rosé of summer 2023 is back for a repeat performance...so let the feeding frenzy begin.

Anecdotally I can tell you that after one glass my wife declared that this is the only rosé she is going to be drinking all summer...and that was before I even told her the price!

So what is the deal here?

Last year, when we learned that the winery behind white wine value superstar Bleu Blanc Thau also made a rosé, we had to try it. So we did...and it was amazing (these guys are good).

Then we found out the price...and folks, this is a back up the truck type of situation if there ever was one!

The south of France has been home to a sea of vines for centuries, though its heyday was the late 19th century after the newly built railroad allowed shipments to fill the carafes of Parisian cafes. Cotes de Thau is gaining notoriety for its rosé wines grown beneath the former volcano of Agde, with a mix of garrigue, sand, nearby sea and lagoons. The Bleu Blanc Thau Rosé is a blend of Cinsault and Merlot made in a crisp, clean, even racy style of pink wine.

So if rosé is your thing (and in the spring and summer it is definitely my thing), you'll want to jump on this bandwagon.

The only real hiccup here is that only 224 cases come into North Carolina per YEAR. So get while the gettin' is good!

I'm gonna cut to the chase here...

I think Bleu Blanc Thau at the sale price of $7.99 may be the best white value and one of the best overall value wines in the store...and in a world where bacon costs $12.99 at the grocery store value is what I am looking for!

Many of you know it as the blue top wine, the wine with fish on the label, BBT, or many other names we've heard it called - but one thing is for certain...people are calling for it every day!

What's up with the wine?

We found the Vivarés brothers from Cotes de Thau – you’ve probably not heard of it but it’s the hilly coastal part of Languedoc in Mediterranean France. They live in Pézenas, which you should visit someday because it’s the charming birthplace of France’s greatest playwright, Molière. Robert Vivarés has a B&B with a fine restaurant and Paul travels the world for his business tasting a lot of wines. They needed a house wine that reflected the place where they grew up. So they blended Picpoul and Terret Blanc from the hills around them and called it Bleu Blanc and its straight up silly value.

This wine arrived middle of last year and quickly entered our Top 25 best sellers.

What really blew us away about this stat is that we realized we have not one time sent a newsletter out about this wine. It just took off on its own - as many of the most delicious wines do...

Domaine Julien de l'Embisque, which has been organically farmed for many years, owns a diversity of terroirs throughout the southern Rhône Valley. They grow most of the diverse grape varieties of the valley too: Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault, Mourvèdre, Marselan and a little known grape called Couston for the reds, and Viognier, Grenache Blanc, Muscat á Petit Grain and Muscat d'Alexandre for the whites.

The entire estate is surrounded by forest and interspersed with hedges. All this creates an ecosystem that allows them to farm without any use of insecticides. This 100% Viognier showcases everything their estate is about - and you have the added bonus of being the only people in the United States with access to this wine!

I've said it many times over the last several months, but never before have we had such an insane amount of depth and breadth in our sub $15 wine offerings. This wine is a prime example of what we're talking about. Just in case you don't believe us, we'll have it on the tasting machine now through Sunday for only $0.25 per taste...because we wouldn't want you to miss out on all the fun. 😁

The biggest sale we run every spring is Benières for $9.99, and the day has finally arrived.

Benières Pinot Noir, which you all have gobbled up to the tune of more than 200,000 bottles (that is a lot of wine) in the last 36 months, has been out of stock for almost 3 months 👀



We told you back in December that for the 4th year in a row Benières Pinot Noir and Chardonnay didn't win the voting here for our Wine of the Year, but maybe they should have. That we were not sure there is any brand we carry more on fire than Benieres - and that there is no brand bringing more thunder when it comes to the quality / price ratio than these wines right now.

The guy who wrote the review above about the Benières Pinot Noir clearly agrees 😂 My guess is he is buying a case at this price.

Burgundy is a tricky place to buy wine.

If you want to spend a small fortune, you can do that, and if you choose carefully, you will get something great. A rather large dose of luck is required as well, since it might be a great wine that isn’t ready to drink.

White Burgundy can be a little more predictable; buy from the right name and you’re solid. Unless you wait too long to drink it and it develops premature oxidation (premox, it’s called, but we can save that for another day).

But move down the ladder to the Bourgogne Rouges and Blancs and things become far more assured. Take this thirty-seven-acre estate down in the Maconnais where the family has been producing wines for four generations. At this price, you’re not risking too much and in fact winemaker Jean-Philippe Prétet creates elegant, pretty Pinot Noir from his twenty-five-year-old vines. No trickiness, only treats.

The old saying about academia is that the battles are so fierce because the stakes are so small, and pointless arguments about which grape is the “greatest” are similarly stupid. There are tens of thousands of grapes and most people have had only a handful so what do we collectively know?

But now that I’ve raised the issue, shouldn't Chenin Blanc be in the discussion? It can be stunningly complex and long-lived as a dry wine, off-dry wine, sweet wine and even dessert wine. If that weren’t enough, the grape can also offer silky and complex sparkling wine. This has 20% Chardonnay to add to its richness, eighteen months on the lees, and more character than you can imagine unless you are already familiar with sparkling Chenin.

You'll find other Chenin Blanc aged in the caves of Saumur at prices like $44.00 (HERE) and $31.00 (HERE) - but we have found nothing even remotely close to this quality at $12.99. Like no joke. It may be the best sparkling wine of all time at $12.99 - and I heard that from some people that only drink sparkling wine.

It's like a little celebration for your taste buds, your wallet, and your friends and family - all at the same time 😁

Domaine Vellas has been on quite the tear as of late.

They seemed to have hit a sweet spot of producing delicious wine, developing incredible packaging and pricing their wines so aggressively that it has people all over the wine world talking.

Up until last fall, the one area that remained unconquered for them was Pinot Noir.

Everybody talks about how difficult Pinot Noir is to grow but, to be honest, it’s not that hard to grow it. It’s just hard to make it taste like Pinot Noir, rather than a generic red wine. You’ve got to grow it in a nice place where things cool off at night, as happens in this little spot of the Languedoc, protected from the afternoon sun.

The thing about this Pinot Noir release from Vellas is that maybe it won’t change your world, but it will taste like Pinot Noir that makes you want to drink some more - and at $12.99 per bottle that is something I need more of in my life!

I would love more producers (and this doesn't just apply to wine) to be showing me how they are able to push the boundaries of high quality and low prices.

Too often right now I feel like we are all getting hit with the exact opposite of that out in the world marketplace - we're getting low quality products pushed on us at every turn, at prices that make my head spin! Nobody has time for that nonsense.

Kudos to the team at Domaine Vellas for bringing this to market. I took a six pack home to get it in the rotation as my new house wine!

We’ve been getting lots of deal offers lately, but every now and again we get one that has to do with a national restaurant chain not taking what they promised a winery, and then the winery has to figure out what they can do with the inventory.
Enter 2022 Alexana Terroir Series Pinot Noir.

Apparently a chain that is not to be named was not able to fill their commitment (they do have good steaks though), so we get to step in and pick up some amazing juice at a great price. It kinda feels like those cards out of Community Chest in Monopoly. "Steakhouse chain mixup - great wine coming your way" 

If you’re not familiar with the story behind Alexana, it is a great one. Dr. Madaiah Revana created this estate in 2005 fulfilling an obsession with Pinot Noir. Alexana is named after his daughter and is located in the Dundee Hills appellation, 28 miles southwest of Portland. His portion of the Red Hills of Dundee is defined by ridges that run north and south, with small valleys on the east, south and west sides. Located between 360 and 640 feet above sea level, the site has eighteen soil types spread over a combination of rolling hills, steep slopes and rugged terrain. Revana Estate is 80 acres, L.I.V.E. Certified, and planted to ten clones of Pinot Noir on those eighteen different soils. Each block is vinified separately and then blended together and aged for eleven months in one-third new French oak barrels.

If this sounds like a lot of action - it is. Nearly 20 years in, the investments Dr. Revana made have really paid off. Alexana produces world class Pinot Noir and Cabernet (along with a few other things), with prices to match. So when we can drink any of their wines, especially the Pinot, for less than $30, we are all in.

No hesitation, never a doubt.
