Last week we met with the powers behind Bodegas Lo Nuevo in hopes of striking up some deals for you guys. They are kinda like the epic power players of Spanish wine, and they always have deals cooking.
Enter 4 pallets of Orlaida into the conversation.

At $9.99 per bottle this wine represents some of the best Cabernet based values that we have ever offered.
Apparently I am not the only one that loves the 2019 Orlaida, as the Vivino iPhone App I use says it is in the top 4% of all wines in the WORLD, and that the current 2019 vintage rates better than any other vintage...so maybe I am onto something :)

Why do we love it?
Bodegas Lo Nuevo's success has allowed them to spread their wings to other prestigious regions. Their Montsant projects have brought them perhaps even more fame than in Jumilla. Orlaida could become a benchmark for the potential of Montsant. The vineyards for their Cabernet are at 2,000 ft. in altitude in the area of Cornudella de Montsant, with Priorat like slate soils. Cariñena vineyards in Darmós and Masrig are on clay soils, and the Syrah vines are located on limestone.
What does all that mean? Delicious, complex, and full bodied red wine that is right in my wine budget sweet spot!

Anyhoo - back to the topic at hand - Dry Creek Mariner one of the lowest prices in the USA! If still waters suggest depth, a wine of this balance and equanimity is proof that noise and intensity aren't required for richness. A blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, 11% Malbec and 8% Petit Verdot, this has length and character, but it’s not ever about the high alcohol intensity typical of California’s celebrated wines.

What's the story here?
Though most people are happy to drink sparkling wine, consumers still seem surprised to learn that Champagne is two-thirds red grapes (Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier) and only one-third Chardonnay.
Put simply, fermentation causes bubbles and if you keep those bubbles in the bottle, you’ve got a sparkling wine. This one is a blend of Semillon (Sauvignon Blanc’s helper for white Bordeaux), Cabernet Franc and Merlot, and has only a moderate amount of pink color to it.
Why shouldn’t Bordeaux make sparkling wine? They make all other styles of wine extremely well. And this one is made just the same way they do it in Champagne and it’s maybe a touch drier.
Actually, all this talk has me even more excited.

The 2020 Moulin St. Jean became a best selling wine for us two years ago and we only mentioned it in an e-mail one time.
Then the 2021 landed and the wine sold 137 six packs in the first 48 hours it landed.
So someone asked at the start of this year when the last time Moulin was on sale and would the supplier maybe open to getting on our value train.
It turns out we have never had this wine on sale...until today!
What makes this wine so good?
The large and sometimes overlooked (but never under-consumed) Languedoc enjoys southern French weather, more Mediterranean than western European. Winemaker/owner Frédéric Bousquet has vineyards that alternate with the critically aromatic scrubland French vintners call “garrigue”. The region also benefits from the Mediterranean climate, which offers a combination of dry heat and a cooling influence from the Atlantic.
Because of the wind called “Cers”, it’s never too hot in the vineyards, and the breeze prevents vine diseases caused by moisture. While most GSMs are topped off with Mourvèdre, Bousquet uses a lesser known grape called Marselan, perhaps typical in the area but hardly ever seen on its own. Think of a dose of red currant jam along with those other two grapes.
All I can tell you is....I know what I'm drinking tonight!

I honestly feel like we're getting to the breaking point on how much things cost. Like, I kinda feel like we're being taken for a ride from some of these companies based on what they are charging.
That's why when wines like this pop up I am equally as excited as I am thankful. I need more $9.99 wine like this in my life! I mean heck, I just need more $9.99 anything in my life at this point!
So where did this gem come from?
There are 10,000+ labels in Bordeaux and nobody really has a handle on all of them. Most of them never make it to the U.S. because there are a surprisingly small number of importers who have range and reach to get the wines into the hands of America’s small and powerful wholesalers, a handful of companies who greatly decide what gets sold and what doesn’t. So it’s fun to subvert the system and bring in some things direct, letting the little guys bring you wines that aren’t part of some faceless distribution conglomerate.
And this is from the heralded 2020 vintage!

We needed a super wine on sale headed into Super Bowl Sunday.
Something that was worthy of a Taylor Swift flying in from Tokyo, Usher Half Time Show, first Super Bowl in Sin City type of wine.
The people behind Maison de Palais Voleur stepped up BIG TIME. Do you find a lot of Gigondas of this quality for $19.99? Ummmmmmm, no.......
Chateauneuf du Pape was one of the wine regions that got me into wine in the first place. I had a bottle of Domaine de Marcoux that knocked my socks off, and I was hooked from then on. That said, over the last decade or so, many of those Chateauneuf wines have priced me out. I have had to seek out value elsewhere...and elsewhere just happens to be right next door to Chateauneuf, in Gigondas.
Only a few years ago, we could say that Gigondas, nearby and reflecting the terroir and grapes of Chateauneuf, was the great bargain of the Southern Rhone Valley. But the price creep has started there as well, and now you have to look harder to find those values. But the quaint little village Gigondas deserves some attention; the Romans certainly thought so. They called it in “Jocunditas” which means joy or rejoicing, so we can guess that somebody liked the wine even then. It’s hard to say what the grapes were in Roman times; the Maison de Palais Voleur though is 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, and 10% Mourvedre.
We've talked a lot recently about discovering wines that have the "it" factor, but don't cost an arm and a leg. Here we have a wine, in the Gigondas bottle with the etched glass, with juice that reminds me of Chateauneuf, all below $20. That's the kind of stuff I need in my life.
Just for fun, we'll have the Palais on the tasting machine at all 8 locations for only $0.01 to taste. That's right, spend a penny and see what all the fuss is about!

Think of Le Volte as if Opus One made a wine you could buy for $22. That's the level of quality and thunder the winery behind this gem brings to the picture. Their famous Ornellaia brand currently runs nearly $200 per bottle and their flagship Masseto currently sells for an eye watering $700 per bottle. These people know what they are doing 😊
What makes the wines so great?
Bolgheri wines are powerful, compact, hard, okay, they’re most often hard and in need of cellaring, but they can have balance. It all comes down to climate – if you are too close to the sea, you will rarely ripen those vicious, vindictive tannins. Ornellaia is in a sheltered spot where the sun can radiate, and where the ocean winds can’t quite penetrate, and Bordeaux varieties can attain deliciousness, complexity and age-ability, especially in the hands of Ornellaia (and Masseto) winemaker Axel Heinz and his team. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot are fermented separately and then blended to be aged in concrete and oak. 2021 is a keeper, with freshness and richness in equal measure.
So today we've got iconic producer paired with the lowest price in the US. Questions? 😁

I can't say for sure if this is the wine Taylor Swift was spotted drinking while celebrating the Chief's win last Sunday, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was...
How does a wine sell more in our store than Mer Soleil, Quilt, and other big names and it was promoted and or on sale just one time since June of 2022?
It's because this is the ultimate "If you know, you know" red wine. It also was behind one of my favorite lines from a recent Caymus blind tasting where a customer circled the number that was Pabellon and just wrote "If this isn't Caymus, I want a case..." 😁
What makes this wine so good?
The powers behind Bodegas Lo Nuevo need no introduction to our customers; we have followed them for several years now. Why? Because they have a remarkable set of vineyards in many of the sexiest parts of Spain, and because they always bring some crazy value to it.
This is a fairly new project for them, but like others they own, it consists not of a large family holding but is a collection of small plots, each planted 15 to 60 years ago. This is the most elevated region of Rioja, the Alavesa, where calcareous clay soils necessitate a reliance upon Tempranillo and where winemakers Bartolomé Abellán and Sara García rest this 100% Tempranillo in French oak for 10 months.
So here we go - on sale through Sunday.

In 1993, when Dave Miner was President of Oakville Ranch Vineyards, Emily Miner became the Tasting Room Manager for Oakville Ranch and a few years later they married and started Miner Family Wines. The Emily’s Cab bottling is their eponymous offering in remembrance of Emily, who lost her battle with lung cancer in 2011 and a portion of the proceeds of Emily’s go to The V Foundation for Cancer Research. But the other reason to buy this wine is that Miner Family wines are just damned good. All of their wines get their fair share of acclaim but their Cabernets are next level; it helps to source grapes from Stagecoach Vineyard, Bonny’s Vineyard (where Silver Oak came to fame) or the legendary Volker-Eisele Vineyard.

Like what is going on here?
Austin Hope, makers of the eponymous Austin Hope line of wines, as well as Treana, Liberty School, Quest, and a few others, released a few years ago an "entry" level Cabernet that is downright insane for the money.
Austin Hope’s family started farming grapes and wine in Paso Robles more than 30 years ago. While they planted apples, they were quick to realize that grapes could prosper as well; few did in 1978. Cabernet Sauvignon, along with Zinfandel, has long been their lodestar, and the power of Paso Robles Cabernet is now a benchmark for California wine. It also doesn't hurt that one of Austin Hope's mentors was Chuck Wagner (of Caymus fame).
The Hope family used to sell grapes to Caymus, and many have opined that the Austin Hope line of wines are eerily similar to Caymus in style, at a fraction of the cost. We will let you all decide if they taste as good!
So this may be a "if you know, you know" type of wine...and now we all know.

We waited 17 years before we carried our first white Bordeaux, and I think we may have been missing out on some sales...because this is the hottest selling wine in the store right now!
Arriving for the first time back in September, Grand Billard has run out of inventory at our distributor's warehouse twice already...and it finally got back in stock late last week!
At $9.99 per bottle we think you will agree, we may have found a unicorn white wine here...
If you ask any wine expert to name the value wines, they will likely reel off only a few dozen well-known names, and some of them count Grand Billard amongst them. It’s the basic Sauvignon Blanc blend, with mostly used barrels to keep the cost reasonable. This is from the critically raved about 2022 vintage and by all accounts these guys knocked this out of the park.
Can I also say it doesn't hurt that there are people out there selling this same wine for $25, and we are able to bring it to you for $9.99. That kinda gets me just as excited as how much I love the wine 😂
So if you're a Sauvignon Blanc fan, a white wine fan, or just generally curious how good this stuff had to be to be the first white Bordeaux to make the cut....this is for you!!

The hype behind our #1 selling Sauvignon Blanc in 2021 and 2022 finally caught up with the inventory at the winery, and this wine has been out of stock since January of 2023 👀.
So to celebrate the return of Cape Charles Sauvignon Blanc (this time from France!), we're putting it on sale all weekend and letting the good times roll.
What makes this wine so great?
The gang behind Valkyrie has pretty much carved a space out for themselves; their California efforts have fueled their successes beyond their humble start-up and now, after killing it with the AVERÆN project in Oregon, they’re hard at work in other parts of the globe.
Their first Cape Charles Sauvignon Blanc hailed from some vineyards in Walla Walla Valley, and now they've turned to Gascony to use its embarrassment of riches in this delicious treat.
Gascony is foie gras, delicious plums and apricots, rich dinners with Armagnac to follow. But the white grapes grown here are not just for great brandy, they have always been consumed as wine too and the last decade or so has seen an embrace of clean, cold winemaking to preserve the aromas of otherwise neutral grapes like Ugni Blanc or Folle Blanche. It’s also seen new plantings of Sauvignon Blanc, a grape that requires no heroic measures to reveal its aromatic riches. What’s fun here is that these same winemaking methods generate something bright, dry and vibrant - needing only an ice bucket and a big glass for full enjoyment.

With all of the talk in the media over the last year regarding AI, I thought it would be fun to ask ChatGPT to write up something on what is one of my favorite value Italian wines.

Not exactly my style, but not bad!
The thing I love most about this wine is that is takes what is usually a tough grape to enjoy young (Nebbiolo), sprinkles in some Barbera and Dolcetto, and makes a value wine that kinda sings on the palate. I love a wine that will pair well with food, but also just drinks well if I want a glass of wine to go with the new season of True Detective (starting it tonight!)
So if Italian value is your thing, and you've never given this a whirl, it is for sure a do not miss.

This is a wine that we tasted in February last year, absolutely fell in love with it, and due to demand it only just showed up in December!
I am here to tell you, this is the best white wine you've never tasted. Hands down, no question about it, it is going to rock your world.
The real question is, what is going on here?!?
Well.........
Lionel Gosseaume, the son and grandson of winegrowers, grew up in his family’s vineyard, but moved away. In 2007 he decided to return but needed some vines of his own. So he bought some from a family friend, and Jean-Claude (the friend) still lives and works on the property today, because he knows those vines better than anyone.
This sweet little vineyard is located in the Loire Valley, halfway between the famous mansions, Chateau Chambord and Chateau Chenonceaux (the kind of Chateaux you see in movies). Most of the vines are a quarter-century old, on clay and silt soils, locally called “sables de Sologne”; Sologne used to be Louis XIII’s hunting grounds, but Sauvignon Blanc is more planted in the region than hunting blinds today.
The Sauvignon Blanc here is complex, crisp, dry and aromatic. It has all the hallmark qualities people look for in more expensive Sauvignon Blanc (hello Sancerre?), at a fraction of the price.
So say hello to your new house white wine for 2024!

Michael Mondavi is inarguably one of the most dynamic individuals in the wine business; no wonder, since he's the son of legend Robert Mondavi. Emblem, one of his latest projects, offers the opportunity for his two children to guide and shape blends of fruit from throughout Napa; this is 90% Cabernet blended with 5% Petite Sirah and 5% Petit Verdot.
Yes, this is delicious wine - but it's also Napa Valley Cabernet....and honestly you just don't see Napa Valley juice for under $25 much anymore. So this wine gets me excited on multiple fronts!
Only downside, as you all know, is the best deals come with the most limited quantities.
Just 65 cases available - given it is a holiday weekend, my guess is they will be gone by Saturday.

So it might be expected that his California blended wines are just as reflective of his skill and savvy. Think 100% Sonoma Cabernet that is juicy, round and powerful.
I think after all the weather craziness yesterday I'm gonna treat myself to a bottle of this tonight...and then maybe grab a few for the weekend too 😁

Saturday was the largest crowd we have ever had for a blind tasting, so I think people were ready for the SIlver Oak Blind Tasting to return! 😂
The best selling wine in the entire store since we picked it up in 2018 has finally been crowned king of a blind tasting, and I can't say I'm super surprised. This vintage of Snowvale, in my humble opinion, is the best they've ever made.
So to celebrate this achievement we're putting it on sale for $9.99 per bottle through Sunday!
In the last 7 years this wine has been on sale at this price just 6 times. You read that correctly.
Each time was like a feeding frenzy. Like we literally could not keep the wine on the shelf.
It was chaos. Controlled chaos, but chaos nonetheless.
