2018 Le Comte de Malartic

Every now and again a wine shows up, it's the first time we have ever carried it, and it just takes off like a rocket ship.

2018 Le Comte de Malartic is just that wine.

Napa winemaking icon Jayson Pahlmeyer had a quote about second label wines (specifically about the Jayson red blend that was his $50 second label to the $150 Pahlmeyer Prop Red) that I love. He said "“The Jayson goes into the same brand new French oak barrels [as the main label, Pahlmeyer], has the same barrel-aging regimen, same blending, same care and dedication from my winemaker,” Pahlmeyer explains. “It’s 90 percent of the quality at 50 percent of the price.”
 
90% of the quality at 50% of the price is a standard I can get behind.
 
One of the best wines I tasted in 2023 was the 2018 Chateau Malartic La Graviere, but at $59.99 that is not in my weekly wine budget.

Their second label, 2018 Le Comte de Malartic, is squarely in my weekend wine budget though!
 
In 2018 for this wine, we’re talking about almost the exact same grape blend, same vat period, same vinification methods, and really the only difference being yields (the Comte is from some of the younger vines on the Estate that have higher yields), and aging time - the Comte sees 15 months vs 18 months for the big boy.
 
After tasting the wine I think Jayson Pahlmeyer is pretty spot on.

Is it as good as the flagship wine? It is not.
 
But at $24.99 vs. $59.99 it suddenly becomes probably one of the 5 best sub $25 wines we carry in the entire store.

It reminds me a bit of a wine called Mas Doix Salanques from Priorat. Not in that they taste the same, but Salanques was a second label to the $100 Mas Doix, and at $29.99 it was not only delicious, I have bottles that are now 20 years old and still taste fresh and young. As a collector and wine lover, finding $25 wines that can go the distance is part of the fun!
 
No other bottles of this vintage are currently for sale in the United States.

Wine.com does have the 2019 vintage available for $34.99 per bottle.
 
A great wine for your cellar / wine fridge, for this weekend, or just because.

All that said, I know what I'm drinking tonight!

What's up with the wine?

Patricia Green was a legend in Oregon. Maybe not that many people knew about her outside Oregon, but within the community of Pinot Noir winemakers, Patty was someone you listened to because she knew so much. While she did some great stuff putting Torii Mor on the map, when she opened her own place in 2000, she was free to make even more amazing wines.

Okay, there’s a lot of wonderful Pinot in Oregon, but Patty Green rises far above the field and, though she left us a few years ago, her winery founding/winemaking partner Jim Anderson continues that legacy of greatness. The “Reserve” is almost entirely made up of barrels that were not included in a single vineyard bottling, but which allows Jim to create a blended wine of high-quality and consistency.

So in essence what you are getting here is single vineyard quality Pinot for $19.99 per bottle - which for those of you who love Oregon Pinot Noir (or Pinot Noir in general for that matter), you know that kinda doesn't exist in the marketplace.

In a current environment where even 1+ million case Prosecco operations like La Marca have had to increase their prices to nearly $14 per bottle at Total Wine, Raffaello Prosecco has proven to be maybe the best value Prosecco on the planet.

That may also explain why it is so hard to keep in stock!

Dare I say this is the best under $10 sparkling wine I have had? I'm willing to put that out there into the universe.

Raphael dal Bo is a real guy, born and raised in Conegliano, the beating heart of Prosecco, the place that still produces the indisputably best version of the Glera grape that gives us this absolutely cheery bubbly. That certainly explains why he was the first to receive organic certification for his Organic Prosecco and why he remains solely focused upon Prosecco still today.

But what is up with Prosecco in general?

After decades as an only vaguely popular international wine, in 2009 Prosecco was redefined; its lesser regions becoming DOCs and its more specialized areas, Conegliano-Valdobbiadene and Colli Asolani, gaining DOCG status. There was plenty of good news in that: no more would lesser areas be available for bottling as Prosecco, and Italy could go to war against other countries (like Australia) labeling their white wines as Prosecco. For Australian producers (and others), Prosecco was a grape, not a place. Concomitant with these changes, Italy had re-titled the grape as Glera, thus mooting any possibility of other countries insisting that they were just naming their wines Prosecco as a varietal designation. Maybe it helped, but Prosecco blew up, internationally speaking.
 
This labeling scheme was good lawyering stuff, for sure. But the larger issue is that Prosecco is now rather complicated, if it is more protected and (theoretically at least), more controlled and likely to be of higher quality. Prosecco producers also began labeling their wines by sugar levels: Raffaello’s Extra Dry (made of 100% Glera) has about the same amount of sugar in it as most Champagnes, so it’s not sweet. But Prosecco of old was generally dry and the higher end DOCG stuff remains so. Confused yet? You should be. This is all wine law in full frontal evolution and it’s anybody’s guess if this makes Prosecco sexier or more popular than it already is. That said, it's still the first choice for most folks.

So if bubbly is your thing, this is a can't miss!!

Bordeaux has had a string of highly touted vintages: some of that praise is deserved (so, like, maybe some is not). 2018 comes to mind, tasting like Napa Cab blends and in the main getting high scores that for this palate seem wrong-headed. But along comes 2019, another vintage for everyone to talk about – if which esteemed writer Jancis Robinson says the 2019 en primeur tasting was “perhaps the best I have ever tasted at this stage...with consistency and the fact that it seems to have masses of ripe fruit, but lots of tannin to keep the wines going for many a long year.”

If a rising tide of a good vintage lifts all boats, Peynaud Bagnac is straight up dry docked and out of the water. So you should check out this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc and let's drink something exciting this weekend to ring in the new year, shall we?

Did we save the best deal for last?

I’ll start by saying I’ve never seen this wine at this price before. Take from that what you will...
 
But as it goes with some of the best deals, they are usually attached to almost minuscule quantities. 15 cases of the 2018 David Arthur Proprietary Red is all we have. 
 
If you’re not familiar with David Arthur, they have a good story to tell. Local grocery store owner buys up nearly 1,000 acres on Pritchard Hill during the 1960s and 1970s and you can imagine how that worked out for the Long Family. The map below now shows some of their neighbors, and it’s a strong group. Continuum, Chappellet, OVID, and Bryant…to name just a few.
 
They also happened to sell their second best land parcel, literally right next to the current vineyards and winery, to Ann Colgin to create what has become Colgin Cellars. (Think $500+ per bottle of insane wine)

Given that it is the Saturday before Christmas, the pedigree of the wine, and the tiny quantities - I’m gonna keep it short and sweet today.

I’m not sure I need to spend any time talking about Bob Foley…but I’ll give a brief review.
 
Bob started at Heitz Cellars, but more importantly spent 15 years as the founding winemaker for Markham Vineyards. Then in 1992, Bob began another 15 years as the founding winemaker for Pride Mountain Vineyards. He also created the highly acclaimed Switchback Ridge, Hourglass, Paloma, and School House wines. Now he has his own eponymous winery on Howell Mountain, and there he makes Cabernets as well as various blends, like The Griffin, the Foley Family crest in Irish heraldry and a blend of the best in the red wine cellar: Merlot, Petite Sirah, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Charbono, Petit Verdot, and sometimes others.
 
A limited amount at this price (the distributor wanted to move some product before the Holiday!), so don't dawdle!

It's last call for a wine we've only had for a few months and dang, has it made quite the splash!

So what is going on here?!?!

One of the wines that really got me into drinking and collecting wine was Chateau Pavie. It's a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon from Saint-Emilion in Bordeaux...and it's like really, really awesome (that is a professional wine recommendation).

Sadly, it now costs over $350 a bottle (inflation? 😳), and that's not really in my wheelhouse.

So when we tried the 2020 Vieux Lescours for the first time earlier this year, I got that same Chateau Pavie feeling.

We're talking similar grape blend, a vineyard originally planted in 1850, 12 months in 75% new French Oak, and all the acidity a wine like this needs to be an age worthy rock star.

And the kicker here? We can bring it to you for the lowest price in the United States - $24.99 per bottle...and that is decidedly in my weekend and my Holiday wine wheelhouse.
 
So if you're looking for maybe a bottle or two to age in the wine fridge for a few years, this is a top choice. That said, it also drinks well on the dinner table with family and friends this Holiday Season.

One thing I’ve learned after doing this for over 17 years is that there is relatively little difference in the vinification methods between $25 wines and $250 wines…sometimes you’re just paying for overhead.
 
So anytime we come across a co-op that has access to some insane vineyard sites, uses top flight barrels, and yet keeps prices reasonable - we’re gonna take a hard look. Some of the best wines in the world started as a Co-op. Ever heard of Clos Erasmus or L’Ermita? 👀
 
Enter Vignerons de Saint Marc - Canteperdrix.
 
We tasted some of their lineup way back in February, and the Vinsobres and Vacqueyras were absolute show stoppers. I mean, the others were really good - but these two were really good.
 
We then found out we could get the Vacqueyras, by far the best of the group, to the US for 50% off the release price (see below)…and that is when things really started to get interesting.
 
These wines, much like the Florets Gigondas, represent everything I love about the wine business right now. When we started in this business, we simply did not have access to this quality of juice at these prices.

The Luce Estate in Montalcino I think may be one of the most beautiful places on earth. While I don't like to judge a book by its cover, typically operators that spend this much money in the vineyard and on their facilities churn out quality product.

So it should be no surprise that the flagship wine from this estate, Luce, rests easy in a world of 99 and 100 point scores and $135 price tags. That said, not all of their wine costs an arm and a leg, and the quality doesn't suffer.

Lucente is the second wine to Luce and is absurdly delicious at a very reasonable price. This is also only the second time we have been able to offer this wine for $19.99, so it is kinda one of those get while the gettin' is good situations You can read a bit more about the wine and see some photos of the estate here.

In a world where Prosecco prices seem to be going parabolic (even heavily distributed brands like La Marca now sell for north of $15.00 in some outlets), there is one brand that is starting to take the world by storm....and that brand is Corte Giovanni.

Though Prosecco is made throughout the northeastern Italian regions of Veneto and Friuli, the DOC of Treviso has time and time again proved itself to be the home of the worlds best Prosecco. Corte Giovanni has managed here a Prosecco that has more vibrancy and complexity to it than most (especially at this price). This very dry version of Prosecco (the meaning of Extra Brut) is as modern as it gets, but it reflects the growing awareness that Treviso is producing wines that aren’t simply the fun, frothy party wines that the larger areas of Prosecco make.

So if you're bringing a bottle to a party (these are party wines after all!) and want bubbles, having a party and want bubbles, want some bubbles for the Holidays, or just love bubbles in general - this is one to keep your eye on.
