Sparkling that is a do not miss

Did someone ask for 100% Pinot Noir Rosé, for only $9.99, from Sancerre winemaking superstar Antoine de La Farge?

'Cause if you did, your ship has come in!

Making rosé is a simple enough process. Since the color is in the skins for all but a handful of grapes, you simply crush the grapes and leave the juice and skins to sit together for a few hours. How many hours? Well, that depends upon the rosé color that you’re seeking. Here Antoine employs what he calls a “back of the truck maceration”, by leaving the juice and skins together just long enough to transport the must from the vineyard to the winery. You get some strawberry and red currant notes, and the wine is a light, pretty pink from only an hour or two on the skins.

Here is what I know for sure: 
- I don't know of anyone else using that winemaking method for rosé like this - and I love it.
- I don't know of any other 100% Pinot Noir rosé at $9.99 per bottle - if they are out there let me know 'cause we want to taste them!
- I'm not sure I could love this wine any more

You don't know what you're missing...

We've had a wave of new products enter the store in the last few weeks, and this may be the one I am most excited about...

Back in February, the people behind our #1 selling and all time most dominant white wine, Bleu Blanc Thau, told us they were launching a sparkling wine based off of the same juice. Obviously this information got us excited...I mean REAL excited. But you can't set yourself up for disappointment, right? Manage expectations. Maybe it won't be amazing?

Then we tried it.

Folks...it is that good, and the fact it is less than $15 makes it that much better for me. Consider it racy, lively and perfect for August.

How are they making sparkling wine with essentially the same juice as Bleu Blanc Thau?

When you ferment grape juice into wine, you get carbon dioxide. With most wines, you let the CO2 drift up into the air. With sparkling wine, you just keep the container of fermenting grapes sealed and you bottle the wine with the bubbles in it as well. It can be more complicated, of course, but that’s roughly how it goes down.

Let me add one more thing - I think we complained too much about the hot weather and mother nature swung us hard in the other direction. So now we are pleading with her to bring back the sunny days, so I can open a bottle of this on the back patio and soak in the sun.

Don't fret though...I'm opening a bottle tonight, even though it is cloudy...it's too good not to!

Today, and honestly the rest of the week, is going to be bonkers.

We are here to report that after a mad dash that saw over 800 six packs get gobbled up in January, another 900 six packs in one week in April (sending this wine out of stock both times), our Silver Oak Blind winner has returned...and is ready to rock.

Just based on back orders for people waiting for this to come back in stock, it may be a record Tuesday. One of our team members even e-mailed the whole company last night and said:



What sent this wine into overdrive?

Our blind tastings always seem to produce some upsets, but honestly this one may take the cake.

Highland Falls, one of our best selling wines of all time, won the Caymus Blind Tasting last fall.

A surprise? Sure. But the wine is a known entity. It sells like hotcakes. I could see it winning in the right conditions.

In this particular case we had a wine that was the last wine we added to the lineup, a virtual unknown, and a wine we have featured in our newsletter just ONE TIME in our 19 year history, that took home the crown.

I'm sorry, what?

I was so worried that nobody would believe us, that we just decided to include the voting results. You can view them here.

581 of you came in January to test your blind tasting chops across 8 wines - and 25% of you voted Seigneur de Feu in first place. Besting Silver Oak by 14 votes.

These two wines, a $10 wine and an $80 wine, took home 47% of ALL the first place votes.

Just wild...

What is even more insane, is that in the one e-mail we have sent about this wine (and I just read this and it kinda gave me chills), I told you - as kind of a joke - that Seigneur du Feu was basically like Silver Oak but only for $10 because of the use of American Oak in the wine. 👀

Here is what we told you:

"Throughout the last two centuries of winedom, French wine has been aged in French oak. Or has it? In the 19th century, French forests, planted for warships, were plentiful enough for barrels too. In the early 20th century, barrels made from Eastern European oak became more common, especially after WWI decimated French forests. But they were replanted with purpose; the barrel industry returned and has dominated the idea of top flight wine ever since. Yet, American oak is crucial to many other wine regions: Spain, Australia, the U.S., maybe even Silver Oak (they love that vanilla smell). So this is a southern French Cab with American oak’s lashing of coconut and sawdust – the classic aromas of American oak barrels.

Maybe think Silver Oak from France, but only costs $9.99? There may be some hyperbole in there, but you get the idea! 😂"

Because then rosé rose up like a zombie eager for fresh meat, though the current iteration of the pink stuff is more often French than not. Provence is the epicenter of it and the French have figured out how we like it: dry, pale pink, light and refreshing.

Our Chapel Hill store is temporarily closed for repairs

Many of you may or may not have heard that central NC near Orange County got over 10 inches of rain on Sunday. Well, that rain flows down towards the ocean and through Chapel Hill and our store at Eastgate Shopping Center (along with the entire center) sustained massive damage.

The most important news: all of our team members are safe. While the damage to the store is significant, we’re counting our blessings — especially in light of the heartbreaking flooding events in Texas.
 
We’re already working on getting the Chapel Hill location back open as quickly as possible (the progress is awesome!). When we do, you’ll be greeted with a refreshed space — including some brand-new tasting machines we’re excited to share with you.
 
We’ve been incredibly moved by how many of you have stopped by or reached out asking how you can help. The Chapel Hill community continues to amaze us with your kindness, resilience, and spirit of togetherness.
 
Online orders for Chapel Hill will hopefully (famous last words) reopen by the end of this week, and we’ll make sure they’re delivered right to your door. We’re not quite sure how long the full recovery will take, but we’re in this together — and we’re up for the challenge.

We found the Vivarés brothers from Cotes de Thau – you’ve probably not heard of it but it’s the hilly coastal part of Languedoc in Mediterranean France. They live in Pézenas, which you should visit someday because it’s the charming birthplace of France’s greatest playwright, Molière. Robert Vivarés has a B&B with a fine restaurant and Paul travels the world for his business tasting a lot of wines. They needed a house wine that reflected the place where they grew up. So they blended Picpoul and Terret Blanc from the hills around them and called it Bleu Blanc and its straight up silly value.

July 4th weekend I am all about the summer things...beaches, lakes, fireworks, pools, boats and rosé...

I am glad there are wines like SWIMBAD in the world. I can basically get two bottles of delicious rose, that will float in the ocean with me while I try to keep cool, all for apparently less than a sandwich at Jersey Mike's. 

What do we know about SWIMBAD Rosé? 

- The wine is delicious, and at this price point, it is right in my budget sweet spot.
- The PET bottle is perfect for all things summertime. It can't break (I literally tested it and threw one across the parking lot - and yes some people gave me a look 😳), and it fits perfectly in a cooler for the beach, lake or right by the pool.

Cotes de Thau is gaining notoriety for its rosé wines grown beneath the former volcano of Agde, with a mix of garrigue, sand, nearby sea and lagoons. Throughout the expansive Roussillon-Languedoc are some of the more adventurous French grapes with which you might not be familiar – Marselan is at the top of the heap. It’s a crossing of Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache and in the last quarter century is being looked to as one of the grapes that might save France from climate change. Will it? Who knows. But it certainly is interesting stuff: a bit lighter than Cabernet Sauvignon but with some of its strengths and backbone. You have been told that Pinot Noir is the most finicky of grapes; indeed, it’s supposed to be the “heartbreak grape.” The statement is not false but it’s also not completely true. To make great Pinot Noir is bloody difficult and to do it consistently is virtually impossible, unless you’re in some famous place. But that’s true of most grapes. It’s true that Pinot Noir grown in the wrong place is pretty dreadful, maybe more dreadful than most other grapes. But the middle ground has plenty of wealth to it – you need a friendly place for grape growing but not too friendly. With France’s Pays d’Oc, there are places where it’s easy to ripen grapes and areas that offer just enough challenge to coax Pinot Noir into showing its friendly and compelling side. This is an ideal example.

Over the last year, many of you have come to learn what we found out in winter of 2022 - Antoine Lafarge is putting out some of the highest quality / affordable white wine in the Loire Valley (dare I say maybe on planet earth?).

While his portfolio contains an embarrassment of riches, his entry level offering "L'Enfant Rebelle" may be the star of the show.

Why, do you ask?

Well, the European AOC system delineates the boundaries of any winegrowing region; the idea is that the best and appropriate area is reserved for the AOCs. That means that there are other places that can make high quality wine but simply don’t fit within the AOC boundaries. That includes this site just outside of the established Loire Valley vineyards where delicious Sauvignon Blanc can be made, similarly to Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé, but not at similar prices to those better-known wines.

That's what we have here, and good golly is it something else. Oh, did we mention it is the lowest price in the United States as well? Heck, you could pay almost 17 pounds in the UK for this (thats basically $22.97 US - click HERE for the offering), or you could just grab it at your neighborhood winestore. for $9.99 😁

But don't take our word for it.

It turns out our #1 sparkling wine producer also makes a sparkling rosé, the quality is off the charts, and the price is so low I had to do a triple take.

Say hello to Corte Giovanni Prosecco Rosé...

Just a few miles south of the beating heart of Prosecco, Valdobbiadene, is the Societa Agricola Colli Asolani di Bedin where Corte Giovanni is made. This third-generation producer was founded in 1948 by Giacomo Bedin where the family has long specialized in Prosecco grown on the gentle slopes of the Colli Asolani hills. This is made from Glera, the classic grape of Prosecco, but a small amount of Pinot Noir is blended in for color and richness.

Sparkling rosé is one of my summertime favorite treats. It's just like the rosé I love on a hot summer day - just bubbly and more fun 😂

As I have opined on many occasions recently, I really love producers that are trying to see how they can stretch the boundaries on what is possible in terms of quality and price (in a good way of course). Mission accomplished on this one.

Isn’t rosé wine one of the clearest harbingers of spring and summer? Sure, rosé is enjoyed year-round now, but as outdoor drinking becomes an actual possibility, the arrival of cool, wet drinks is the true representative of the renewal of life, at least for the wine lover. Well, if you stick around the wine business long enough, you’ll have seen it all. Where once wine coolers were cooler than Liebfraumilch, now hard seltzer is hot (served cold). White Zin was once de rigeur, though it was never French; it was from the good ol’ US of A. But then that became too sweet and the category died. Or seemed to. Because then rosé rose up like a zombie eager for fresh meat, though the current iteration of the pink stuff is more often French than not. Provence is the epicenter of it and the French have figured out how we like it: dry, pale pink, light and refreshing.

Jean-Nöel Haton makes numerous Champagnes; the Haton house is in the top ten of Champagne producers. This family has been making Champagne since 1928 and you should probably get in on it before the centennial in a few years when things are bound to get noisier and pricier.

Most wineries talk about giving their wines a "sense of place", but few places can create value wines like Jumilla, with its very unique and intense weather.  The hot summers are bounded by the long, cold winters and its high elevation, providing a shift of as much as a 77 degrees difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures (you read that correctly) and an almost total absence of rainfall, with its vineyards scratching out a spot on dry and stony ground. It’s tough ground for most grapes, but Monastrell (the French, who borrowed it from Spain, call it Mourvedre) can thrive here.
 
This 100% Monastrell from Bodegas de Nuevo is a great example of the almost preposterously complex drinkability that Jumilla can deliver. Huge fruit, depth, and complexity all balanced together for a price that makes me smile.

In a world of overpriced chinos and $10 cookies, we're thrilled we can still count on two things in this world - thrilling value wines coming out of Jumilla, and McDonalds fountain Diet Coke remaining the greatest of all time.

How about a wine normally only sold at the winery, from one of the icons of US Pinot Noir, at what we believe to be the lowest price ever offered on this wine in the US?

How good is the price on this single vineyard Pinot Noir?

Let's just say Total Wine is selling the entry level estate Pinot Noir bottling from Patricia Green for $37.99 (here) - so there's that...  

Patricia Green was a legend in Oregon. Maybe not that many people knew about her outside Oregon, but within the community of Pinot Noir winemakers, Patty was someone you listened to because she knew so much. While she did some great stuff putting Torii Mor on the map, when she opened her own place in 2000, she was free to make even more amazing wines. Okay, there’s a lot of wonderful Pinot in Oregon, but Patty Green rises far above the field.

Patty Green left us too soon in 2017, but her legacy as one of the most gifted winemakers in the world of Oregon Pinot Noir lives on through her business partner Jim Anderson.

I’ve never had a bad Pinot from Patricia Green, but their Anderson Family Vineyard bottling is next level. Up until we were able to cut this deal, I had only even seen a bottle a handful of times. 

You can read more about the vineyard here, but let’s just say these people know what they are doing, and they do it better than almost anyone else in Oregon (dare I say, also the United States?).
