Who is Max?
Max Shubert, the irascible but brilliant creator of Penfold’s Grange Hermitage, the most famous wine of the Southern Hemipshere. In the 1950s Australia just drank sweet, fortified wines (don’t chortle, Americans did the same back then). Max created a wine that reminded him of great Bordeaux and his bosses responded by telling him, if he ever did it again, they would fire him.
But Max being Max, he kept making Grange on the sly and then, though he never really owned up to it, he sent some bottles of Grange to an important blind wine tasting in England and it won. His bosses wisely chose not to terminate him after all. I met Max a few decades later and he was still irascible but that’s another story.
Meanwhile, you should drink this Shiraz named for him; it’s far friendlier than he was.

The Jackson Family has brought us some of the best deals over the years. Their scale allows them to push the limits of discounting when they want to grab market share, and we are all for it! Their scale has also allowed them to cultivate a spare no expense winemaking operation, churning out some of the best wines on the West Coast.
Case in point, Maggy Hawk. The Jackson Family Collection took one of their top winemaking talents (Sarah Wuethrich), turned her loose on some of their top land holdings...and the result is some of the most exciting California and Oregon Pinot Noir you can buy.

Why do we love it?
Bodegas Lo Nuevo's success has allowed them to spread their wings to other prestigious regions. Their Montsant projects have brought them perhaps even more fame than in Jumilla. Orlaida could become a benchmark for the potential of Montsant. The vineyards for their Garnacha are at 2,000 ft. in altitude in the area of Cornudella de Montsant, with Priorat like slate soils. Cariñena vineyards in Darmós and Masrig are on clay soils, and the Syrah vines are located on limestone.
What does all that mean? Delicious, complex, and full bodied red wine that is right in my wine budget sweet spot!

It has become a tradition here that we take a moment at the end of each year just to say THANK YOU...and in a year like 2021 we cannot thank you enough. Honestly, it's been a tough last two years, right?
As we approach our 16th Birthday (is that even possible?!?), we want to just reiterate how truly appreciative we are of you spending your hard earned dollars with us over the last 12 months and we hope to continue to earn your business as we enter 2022. We are humbled by the opportunity to serve each and every one of you, and we don't take it for granted.

From the import book of wine importing celebrity Eric Solomon, comes a Champagne that is sure to please on this New Year's Eve.
Now this may be a bit confusing, but stay with me – Champagne maker Davy Dosnon is part of a family lineage in Champagne that spans generations and he makes wine from his family’s estate that is labeled as Champagne Dosnon. But he also makes a wine called Champagne Henri Dosnon, made from grapes he buys from his next door neighbors in the sub region Côte des Bars.
Champagne Henri Dosnon Brut Rosé is a blend of mainly Pinot Noir with about 10% Chardonnay aged in bottle for 20 months before disgorgement and finished with a dosage of 10 grams/liter which, if you’re not sure, is a bit dry for a Brut Rosé. These are distinctive wines, unusual in that they are barrel fermented in used, white Burgundy barrels, creating richness and complexity that shouldn’t be confusing at all, just really nice.

Today we're featuring what may be my favorite white wine in the store right now - Solanilla - at the lowest price it has ever been offered! I mean, when it is 76 degrees in December that is white wine weather, right?
Solanilla is a stylish version of modern Rueda, a white wine based upon the Verdejo grape, a Spanish treasure that might have died out were it not for the steadfastness of one man: Angel Rodriguez of Martinsancho. For a time, Verdejo often was mixed with Sauvignon Blanc, which more or less covered up the true character of Verdejo. These days, many blend it with Viura, not a sin in itself. But the character of Verdejo is very much worthy of its own expression.
Usually, this means treating it like Sauvignon Blanc, emphasizing its tangy, somewhat herbal citrus notes. But the grape can carry oak too though few are committed to such versions at present. Solanilla is one of those few: it's barrel fermented and aged eight months in new French oak, showcasing the richness and texture of Verdejo.
For me it's like if Rombauer and Louis Latour had a baby. You get the richness of the Cali Chardonnay, yet the liveliness of the Burgundy...all wrapped up in a Spanish Verdejo.

Yes, I do love this label...but I love the wine even more.
Pabellón cruised into Top 20 best selling wines of 2021 and we only mentioned it in an e-mail one time. Once. That means the people that were buying it kept buying it over, and over, and over again. I think they love it as much as I do.
So when it made a splash into the Wines of the Year sale more people started picking it up and now it's getting interesting. We received a bunch of e-mails over the Holiday to our inbox with a photo of this bottle with things like "Do you have more?!" and "When will this be on sale again?".
Well folks...we aim to please. So this week we are putting Pabellón back on sale through the end of the week. It's your chance to either see what you've been missing out on or grab a six pack to get you through January 😂
It makes sense this wine is so delicious.
The powers behind Bodegas Lo Nuevo need no introduction to our customers; we have followed them for several years now. Why? Because they have a remarkable set of vineyards in many of the sexiest parts of Spain, and because they always bring some crazy value to it.
This is a fairly new project for them, but like others they own, it consists not of a large family holding but is a collection of small plots, each planted 15 to 60 years ago. This is the most elevated region of Rioja, the Alavesa, where calcareous clay soils necessitate a reliance upon Tempranillo and where winemakers Bartolomé Abellán and Sara García rest this 100% Tempranillo in French oak for 10 months.

Why is the wine so special?
Well, if you stick around the wine business long enough, you’ll have seen it all. Where once wine coolers were cooler than Liebfraumilch, now hard seltzer is hot (served cold). White Zin was once de rigeur, though it was never French; it was from the good ol’ US of A. But then that became too sweet and the category died. Or seemed to. Because then rosé rose up like a zombie eager for fresh meat, though the current iteration of the pink stuff is more often French than not. Provence is the epicenter of it and the French have figured out how we like it: dry, pale pink, light and refreshing.

Are we really basically one week away from Christmas? Yowsa!
For me, one of the wine highlights of 2021 was finally getting the opportunity to present Il Fauno to you at below $25. We have been working to make this happen for years, and the stars finally aligned for us this fall.
Why do we think Il Fauno is the super tuscan to end all super tuscans?
Is it that good? The answer is undeniably - yes.
Tenuta di Arceno is an ancient Tuscan estate, massive in scale at over 2500 acres, producing some of the most interesting and powerful wines in the Chianti Classico DOCG region and under the Toscana IGT designation. The estate is in the southern portion of Chianti Classico in the all-important commune of Castelnuovo Berardenga where Il Fauno is produced.
Here Merlot is the dominant grape, at about half the blend, with Cabernet Franc playing a supporting role and only a bit of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. It’s grown in the rather warmer sunnier portion of the estate and, with more clay, famously a soil that Merlot can, in the right places, do great things.
So pop a bottle tonight on this wonderful holiday weekend. Celebrate yourself, celebrate your family, celebrate your friends and celebrate all we have to be thankful for!

In a world of ever increasing prices, it's nice to know that some things never change. Case in point, this absolutely epic Rhone offering from Bernard Chamfort. It hit its stride this time last year, and it hasn't looked back since.
What is the deal?

I love Chateauneuf du Pape, Cotes du Rhone, Cornas, Gigondas, Hermitage...I love it all. So when a wine like this comes along that tastes as it does, and only costs $12.99, I get super fired up. This could easily pass for a $50 Chateauneuf du Pape. It's that good. Heck, there are even some places that sell the entry level Cotes du Rhone from Bernard Chamfort for more than we sell this dream bottle (check it out here).
You may start by asking, why is this place called God’s Plan (Plan de Dieu)? Isn’t that a bit presumptuous?
Well, the tale is told that the name harks back to the Middle Ages, when walking across this wide, bandit-infested forest and scrubland was like committing your fate to God. But now it’s mostly vines on red clay and alluvial pebbles and cobbles. Nothing but red wine here, from the usual suspects of Grenache (mostly), Syrah and Mourvèdre. But like its neighboring Côtes du Rhone Villages, Plan de Dieu’s reds are made more complex by the regional garrigue, the aromatic Mediterranean flora, particularly bay, thyme, and lavender.
While some New-Worlders just can’t wrap their heads around the idea that the nearby plants might add something to the wine, it seems pretty basic. If you can stand in the vineyard and smell those other plants, then some of those aromatic molecules are in the air, on the grapes and end up in the wine. It helps to have skilled and experienced winemakers too - The Chamfort family is a fourth-generation winery, with about 100 acres of vines in Sablet, Rasteau and Vacqueyras, as well as Plan de Dieu, where the bottles are embossed with the AOP’s insignia of grapes with a halo over them. Hmm. Maybe greater historical accuracy would have meant a bandit’s mask and a knife sticking out of the cluster, but they didn't ask us for our opinion on this one.

Pine Ridge Napa Cabernet is the gift that keeps on giving in 2021.
They closed out their 2017 to us back in February and based on the success of that offering, they gave us a chance at 150 six packs of their 2018 at the same low price. "I just heard from our supplier and Tatiana Guillot will not be making Macon Villages for 2021 the harvest being so small. I am sorry for the inconvenience but Loire and Burgundy will be very complicated this year. Tatiana Guillot yields were down 47% on the year."
So the 187 cases we have of this epic white Burgundy (100% Chardonnay) are all we will be getting until 2023 👀

The Guillot Family has been making Chardonnay in Burgundy for generations, but this is the first offering we have ever seen from them that we could sell below $15.00.
Oh, and this is not just your regular ol' Mâcon...
Macon Villages was once a bigger deal, or at least it was once a wine that absolutely every restaurant had to pour by the glass. Some of the biggest names in the business started their careers in this airy, Chardonnay-laden territory (you know, like Georges Duboeuf, for one).
In the climate change era, Macon seems to be morphing from light and slightly generic to richer and even slightly buttery. But only slightly. Remember that Chardonnay in France is almost always more about the minerals than the butter; Macon is clean and crisp and tangy. Yet, it is increasingly weighty.

As with everything in the world right now, Napa Valley Cabernet is in short supply. While it is caused by mother nature, and not supply chain gridlock, the Napa Valley Cab supply problem is as bad as we have ever seen it. Many producers are starting to tell us they are running out of product, and their next release is not until September of 2023 👀
That makes opportunities like this all the more exciting for us. When we see them, we jump at the opportunity!
You may recall the Silenus flagship wine we offered you a few weeks back. It was a $50 bombshell full of fruit that used to make up the base component for Silver Oak.
Well, they also make an entry level Cabernet called Tyros - and it is absolutely delicious as well!
Silenus has quite the history in Napa. The estate used to be known as Newlan Vineyards. Bruce Newland was a rocket scientist from San Jose who liked to vacation in Napa Valley, so he decided to start a winery (why not!). He chose this southern portion of Napa Valley because it enjoys a longer growing season, earlier bud break and optimal ripeness. But Newlan had to change hands in 2008 and so Silenus rose up, starting on a track that has culminated in being one of the first Napa Green properties (the sustainability program from Napa Valley Vintners) to develop a Carbon Farm Plan for the vineyards to become Carbon Neutral, regenerative farming that is the gold standard in sustainability and healthy farming. While other types of farming (organic or biodynamic) may be healthy for the grapes, they do not address the use of fossil fuels or the work required of vineyard workers. Owner and President Scott Meadows came aboard when it was Newlan but now he, his wife Yuko and his two daughters live, garden and create wine there.

The deal train continues to roll into December, and this is one of my favorites!
Long time Central Coast winemaker Gregory Ahn knows where the good stuff is, and he has sourced grapes from three ranches across coastal Central California, from Santa Barbara to Arroyo Seco to Monterey, from Grenache (61%), Syrah (36%) and Mourvedre (3%). Each of those valleys or valley-defined areas, share something in common, whether we’re thinking about Santa Barbara or Monterey: the valleys run east and west, instead of north and south (think Napa; think Sonoma, think Bordeaux; think many wine valleys). That makes it more Pacific influenced, colder, certainly, more dramatically colder in the afternoons. That lengthens the growing season and improves intensity and balance. Or so some of us believe.
This particular bottling was actually founded by the iconic Joseph Phelp's winery (hence the name) and was sold to it's current ownership group along with the vineyards back in 2008 (remember what was going on then :)
As far as we can tell the quality level has not skipped a beat, as this 2018 is an absolute show stopper.
If you've got someone in your gift universe who loves to google the bottle of wine you bought them to see how nice it is - this is the one for them! They will think you paid $50 and the quality is sure to impress. Client gifts, anyone? 😁

Many publications came out with their suggestions (like the WSJ, HERE), but we saw absolutely zero rosé Prosecco being offered under $10. Maybe we should have expected that given the expected demand, but we needed to look harder.
Enter Raphael dal Bo.
So Raphael dal Bo is a real guy, born and raised in Conegliano, the beating heart of Prosecco, the place that still produces the indisputably best version of the Glera grape that gives us this absolutely cheery bubbly. That certainly explains why he was the first to receive organic certification for his Organic Prosecco and why he remains solely focused upon Prosecco still today.
We've been selling his Raffaello Prosecco for the last three years, and it continues to absolutely dominate the value sparkling / Prosecco category. He contacted us and told us that he had a Rosé Prosecco in the works, and would we be interested in trying it.
Of course we would. And the wine was insane.
