In the 15 years we have been open, Cape Charles Cabernet and Darley Proprietary Red will go down as two of the most special wines we have ever sold. 

I wish we had an infinite amount of both, but that's not how the wine business works.

So while Cape Charles literally lasted 8 weeks, we held some of this one back to celebrate the opening of our new store. 

What makes the wine so special?

Well, if Baron Ziegler brings us the juice, it is going to be lights out good.

Cape Charles will go down as one of the best we have ever offered. Never before have we had so many customers come back for 2+ case return purchases. By that I mean the number of customers who bought some, took it home and tasted it, and then purchased over 24+ bottles right after they tried it. 

Darley is something equally as compelling. In our 10 years of working with Baron on these projects, this is the first time he was not willing to tell us where he got the juice. Only that it came from the Rutherford Bench, and once we tasted it there would be no question we would want it. He was unwilling to compromise his contact, as the fruit source was too important to him.

The Rutherford Bench, if you’re not familiar, is basically like ground zero for Napa. Think Lail, Cakebread, Caymus (originally), Far Niente, Grgich Hills etc. Back in 1988 when a group of Rutherford Bench wineries were thinking about trying to establish an AVA for the area, the original committee was made up of wineries BV, Far Niente, Flora Springs, Harlan, Inglenook, Robert Mondavi, and Pine Ridge, and growers Tom and Martha May, Ren Harris, Robin Lail, Bob and Alex Phillips, Barney and Belle Rhodes, and Shari and Garen Staglin. So we’re talking the tippy top of the wine power pyramid here. I’ve included a map below of the current day stretch drive of the bench. You are probably familiar with some of the names.

With Asheville opening, during our Labor Day sale we continue to highlight wines that we think help set winestore. apart. No question, Bodegas Morca is one of those wines.

If you like big red wine, this is an absolute do not miss. 
 
Clio and El Nido have been two of the hardest wines for us to source since we opened for business. If you are not familiar with the wines, they are Monastrell and Cabernet based powerhouses from the Gil Family (you can read more on the family from a recent Wine Spectator article HERE).

Gil Family Estates looked to replicate the success that Bodegas El Nido (Clio) had in Jumilla in the Campo de Borja by creating Bodegas Morca. When I say replicate, I really mean replicate. For instance, the Bodegas Morca “Touran” is in the same bottle as El Nido, packed in the same two packs as El Nido, in the same 4 bottle case as El Nido. The “Morca” is packed in the same case as Clio etc. etc.
 
The wines are virtually identical in flavor. While they are not the same grapes (Morca is Garnacha based), I am willing to put a lot of money on the fact that if I served them side by side I am not sure even the most skilled taster could tell them apart.
 
Our growing relationship with the Gil Family has allowed us to get deeply involved in this project, and based on the quality of what we tasted we purchased nearly 60% of all the Touran that came into the United States and 40% of all the Morca that came into the US.
 
Sadly, that doesn’t translate to a lot of wine...but we can enjoy it while it lasts!

Inexpensive these wines are not - but if you are looking for some absolutely insane, high quality, powerful red wine, you're gonna want to get involved here.

From the Cabardés region inside Langeudoc, and a little town called Ventenac, in the rolling foothills of the Pyrenees. For France, this is warm climate viticulture though it is not so different from the southern Rhone Valley climatically speaking. In general, the Languedoc doesn't cool off in the same manner as the Rhone but Grenache is happily at home in such a sunny place. And the family is invested not only in their historical sites and vines on the side of Montagne Noire but also in sustainable viticulture. The vineyard is free of chemical inputs and the wine has no added sulfites; it’s aged only in traditional concrete tanks.

So imagine how pumped we are today!!!

Once upon a time (pre-Sideways days) Newton’s name was spoken in reverent tones as, alongside Pride Mountain, Pahlmeyer, Duckhorn and a few others; this is where Merlot excelled. But then people started treating Merlot like that awkward cousin who has too much to drink and then starts talking politics at the Thanksgiving table and great work stretching back to the 1980s was somehow forgotten.

I'd love to tell you that we are the ones that uncover every new hit wine here at winestore., but often you guys are the ones that make it happen!

You guys know we do special orders all the time for wines we don't have in stock, and a long time customer e-mailed us a photo of this bottle that they loved at a restaurant (and paid $12 a glass) and wondered if we were able to get it for them.

What's the story here?

Dan Bada & Charlie Trivinia, whose mothers emigrated to the U.S. together from Le Marche, Italy, and lived in the same house for some time. The two were childhood friends and in adulthood they decided to launch a wine import business. They work with winemakers Giuseppe and Luigi Anselmi in the Veneto to create this wine from the Anselmi’s 600-acre estate near the sea.This is traditional Pinot Grigio: stainless steel, fresh and tangy.

So when it's this hot outside, you may want to throw one of these in the fridge. Dare I say, you maybe even want to throw an ice cube into the glass. Then sit back, relax, and enjoy.

This cabernet doesn't need much of an introduction. Crafted under the hand of expert winemaker Eric Stine, this wine has been in our top 5 best sellers since its release in 2017. 

What makes Kingstree so great? It's honestly a little bit of everything. The package is awesome. The wine is a perfect example of California richness and structure - and it's ridiculously easy to drink. The price is certainly right...and at $11.99 it represents almost silly value.

The breakout white wine star of the pandemic may have been White & Sea - and the new vintage has just arrived!

We found this gem at the world's largest wine trade show, ProWein, where so many of the world’s winemakers collect each spring in Germany (although not since 2019 :(. At Prowein we tasted and tasted and tasted (someone has to do it). We did all that tasting because you wanted us to find something so tasty, so refreshingly crisp (but still weighty enough to matter) and, dare we say it, a freaking value that it practically crawled into our luggage and said take me home.

White and Sea fit that mold for us - and I think you all seem to agree with our assessment. As since March of 2020 this has been the #1 selling non chardonnay white wine across all of our stores.

What makes it so good?

It’s surprising that grapes like Sauvignon Blanc aren’t more widely planted in southern France, as they can be harvested fairly early to retain bright and citrusy acidity without really losing character or even complexity. So here they do only night harvests, and they keep fermentations at low temperatures, emphasizing the tropical side of the grape.

The wine also handles consumption at high velocity quite well - so with the start of school in 2021 now upon us, you may want to have a bottle handy :)

Past winner of our Silver Oak Blind Tasting (hopefully we will have another one of those soon!), Tradition, is back in stock!

The winery behind this gem is cult classic Amizetta. The Clark family founded the winery in the 1970s and was intent upon eschewing the valley floor (where so many of the big names are), instead crafting wines from the hillsides. Their kids grew up in Napa culture and, while they continue to manage Amizetta, they also have started the Tradition project in which they blend together ideal sites to mirror the methodology of earlier Napa vintners.

This Cabernet blend is big, easy drinking, has the pedigree of a Secretariat, and has become a winestore favorite in just the last 18 months we have been carrying it...so I'm not sure what else needs to be said (other than that we have it for you at the lowest price in the US :)

Last time we were able to offer you Vacheron Sancerre Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc it was 2016.
 
There just is not a lot of it made, most of it sells in France, and what does come into the US mostly goes to Michelin Star type restaurants in New York, Boston, Los Angeles and Chicago.
 
Back in 2016, 84 cases - total - came into the US of the Pinot Noir. A cursory run around the interwebs searching for current vintage Vacheron will show places with “9 bottles in stock” and massive quantities like that 👀

What is so crazy good about Vacheron?
 
Every region has its champions, even if it’s unfair to single out particular producers when the ancient Loire Valley has so many heroes. But cousins Jean-Laurent and Jean-Dominique Vacheron are among those great winemakers - even if you've never heard their names before...

If Sauvignon Blanc is your thing - this is by some estimations the best that is made on planet earth. It exists on a whole other level.

If you love Pinot? I’d put this stuff up against even the greats like Dujac at 10x the price. I’m not kidding…not even a little. And in a vintage as lush as 2018, this is just plain fabulous stuff.

Pro tip - chill the Pinot Noir before drinking, just as you would the Sauvignon Blanc. You won't be disappointed! (especially when it is this hot outside!)

Since Waccamaw Proprietary Red was released in 2014 by the fine folks at Banshee, we have been able to sell it at this price just twice.

After we begged and begged to be able to do it again, we were told between the Cabernet shortage in Northern California, costs rising all over the place etc. etc. that just was not possible moving forward. That said, they had 150 cases of the 2018 left and if we bought it all at once, and paid up front for the inventory, we could have one last hoorah.

Summertime is rosé drinking time, and sadly some of the most popular ones don't make it all summer long 😭

Lou Pichoun has been a staple on my patio this summer, and we're forced to now let you know we are down to our last 36 cases for this year. Meaning if just 10 of your friends at each store grab a six pack before you, it will be all gone. So that is why I just bought a six pack 😁

Why did we fall in love with it? (besides the blue cork...)

Along France’s border with Italy, between the Mediterranean coast and the continental region of Savoie, the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence is traversed by the Durance river. Vineyards are mostly found on the valley hills for maximum sunlight exposure. So the days are Mediterranean warm but the high altitude and the presence of the mountains makes for much cooler nights as air from the Alps descends into the vineyards.

These conditions make for delicious rosé. While this has the look and feel of Provençal rosé, it's a bit lighter and airier. And in case you wondered who Lou Pichoun is, that’s Provençal slang for the youngest, as in, the most favored child.

Chuck Wagner and his family, as you probably know, are virtual dynamos in the California wine business. Joe Wagner, the grandson of Chuck Sr. (one of the great pioneers of Napa) produces Pinot Noir in Oregon.
