You may remember this wine from 2019…which feels like it was a lifetime ago. If there ever were a $25 baby Chateauneuf, this is it.
When COVID hit, what little we had left of this wine was gobbled up - and as far as we knew there was no more to be had…until we got a message about 8 months ago.
Domaine Vellas is a small operation, and sometimes mistakes get made. When we placed our latest order for other products with them in September 2021, they informed us they had 147 six packs (73.5 cases) of the Garoloup that they mistakenly thought had been labeled with EU labels - and instead they were labeled with our US labels.
Score!
We thought this shipment would have been here by Christmas - but enter basically the most insane global shipping environment on record - and the wine finally arrived to our distributor last week!
Our original e-mail and back story on this wine is below. Since the wine arrived back in the store on Friday, weekend traffic gobbled up 44 of those cases, leaving just 354 bottles remaining.
You guys know what to do!

Last month we told you about the largest wine trade show in the world, and the best wine we had at said show in terms of quality and price. Les Prejuges has since taken off like a rocket ship, but what we didn't tell you about was our favorite wine we had at the show, regardless of price.
Some quick background. At this trade show you can set up meetings, just cruise around and taste at booths, or they had these tasting stations organized by region where you can taste without someone giving you the sales pitch. It was at one of these stations (the Rhone one to be exact) where we tasted a wine that, as Andrew Jefford once said, “rearranged my inner pantheon in a way that truly great wine can."
The label was awesome, the glass had an etched mountain range and the wine itself was just massive and delicious. We had trouble figuring out the booth for the winery, so I just took a snap of the back label and we figured we would hunt them down on the interwebs later.
So we’re cruising around these giant airline hangers filled with wines to taste and there is a booth with literally a HUGE LINE of people waiting to taste / talk to the proprietors. We were intrigued. We kinda slow walked by and don’t you know, sitting on the counter, is the wine we tasted and loved. Clearly we were not alone as groups of people were holding the bottle up, tasting over and over again, and speaking to the owners.
We waited our turn, rolled up and began negotiations. We had to have it! This wine has never before been sold in the United States. You all are the first people to get a crack at it. When they told us the price we would be able to offer it to you, we had a tough time keeping any type of poker face we were so excited.
The blend here is Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre from the appellation of Pic Saint Loup (you may not know it, but you do now!). I honestly would encourage anyone who likes big red wine to give this a try. I think / hope you will be as stunned as we were…
As for the name of the wine - having the word “blanc” (white in French) on a red wine I thought might be confusing in the US, but the winery told me this name comes from an old French Proverb and they were not changing it, so we kept everything the way they originally packaged it…you can read more about the origin of the name HERE - it's pretty awesome.
