No one is slowing down the Wagner clan. With the Copper Cane series of wineries, this multi-generational dynamo has eminently gulp-able wine to bring to market. Elouan is another project helmed by famed grandson of Charlie Wagner (he made Caymus) and Chuck Wagner’s youngest son (who helped create Belle Glos and then Meiomi).

As a fifth generation Napa Valley winemaker, Joe Wagner had learned his way around a vineyard and winery long before he was able to drink wine. By the time he was 19, he was in it up to his elbows. In 2014, he opened a new company Copper Cane Wines & Provisions, and Elouan Winery became one of his Pinot Noir obsessions (think Belle Glos).

Let us explain the name “Missoulan Wash” on the label: a term that describes not only the little piece of northern Oregon owned by the Wagner Family but much of the Pacific Northwest landscape as well. About fifteen thousand years ago, there were floods that originated around present-day Missoula, Montana, glacial dams that broke and spilled water a hundred or more feet high traveling across what is now Washington and Oregon at nearly fifty miles an hour. Since there were people living there then, that was definitely a bad day. But the good news is that the floods altered the landscape in unique ways, and this part of Oregon shares some of the flood materials and washed rocks that were pooled in places along the flood route.

The wines from these places can be large and Elouan wines proffer big fruit and character. Elouan offers a Pinot Noir style reminiscent of the Caymus mentality: lush, supple, ripe and rich.

You've seen this movie before.

But dang people, every time I get one of these new products, taste them, and then see the price... I honestly have trouble believing what I am seeing / tasting.

What's up with this particular wine?


Maury is not a person; it’s a place, in the warm Agly Valley along the Mediterranean coast of France with Priorat-like schist soils. The traditional wines built on old Grenache vines but the brilliant Jean-Marc Lafage creates this gem as a dry and powerful Grenache, and Syrah blend.

It's a perfect example of why Solomon and Lafage are so successful. Take a region where vines have been cultivated for centuries, but people are just now paying attention. Bring in a winemaker whose sole focus is churning out some of the best value wines in the world. Purchase grapes from said high quality vines at a ridiculous price. Bring to market wine that if made in the Rhone Valley would cost 2-3x as much. Repeat as necessary.

As long as these two keep the hits coming, we'll keep drinking them :) We hope you love this one as much as we do! The price is certainly right!

What's up with the wine?

We found the Vivarés brothers from Cotes de Thau – you’ve probably not heard of it but it’s the hilly coastal part of Languedoc in Mediterranean France. They live in Pézenas, which you should visit someday because it’s the charming birthplace of France’s greatest playwright, Moliere. Robert Vivarés has a B&B with a fine restaurant and Paul travels the world for his business tasting a lot of wines. They needed a house wine that reflected the place where they grew up. So they blended Picpoul, Terret and Colombard from the hills around them and called it Bleu Blanc and its straight up silly value.

We taste A LOT of really bad inexpensive wine every year. If we find 4 or 5 wines under $15 each year that really sing, we consider that a huge success.

This is one of those wines that sings. Why, do you ask?

As the Foppiano family has been growing grapes in the Russian River Valley since 1896, it seems reasonable to slap that vintage on this wine. That’s particularly true because the wines of a century ago were field blends, amalgamations of various and sundry grapes planted throughout the North Coast vineyards. It’s only in the last half century that people have become fixated on varietally-specific wines, but not so much back then.

Today, the Foppianos have 160 planted acres; back then, not as much. But they grew a mix of what was cool then, and maybe what is still cool today: this is 67% Petite Sirah, 14% Carignane, 8% Barbera, 7% Mourvedre, 4% Zinfandel.  Don’t let the grape blend give you the impression that this is some over the top, high octane wine. It’s more like the wines of that bygone era: soft, supple, fruity and with only moderate alcohols at 13.5 %. It’s aged for a year in American and French barrels. Like we say, a moderate touch.

We'll have it on the machines at all eight stores all weekend long so you can see for yourself!

Finally...

Finally, after 6 long months of delays, our best selling white wine is rolling back into our stores this morning.

We found this gem at the world's largest wine trade show, ProWein, where so many of the world’s winemakers collect each spring in Germany. At Prowein we tasted and tasted and tasted (someone has to do it). We did all that tasting because you wanted us to find something so tasty, so refreshingly crisp (but still weighty enough to matter) and, dare we say it, a freaking value that it practically crawled into our luggage and said take me home.

White and Sea fit that mold for us - and I think you all seem to agree with our assessment. Up until October of last year it was our best selling white wine in 2021...then supply chain chaos kept it away until now. 

What makes it so good?

It’s surprising that grapes like Sauvignon Blanc aren’t more widely planted in southern France, as they can be harvested fairly early to retain bright and citrusy acidity without really losing character or even complexity. So here they do only night harvests, and they keep fermentations at low temperatures, emphasizing the tropical side of the grape.

The wine also handles consumption at high velocity quite well - so with the warm weather now hopefully here for good, you may want to have a bottle handy :)

I'll be honest. I love all things rosé...and I love all things Pinot Noir. So when they come together in a delicious wine like this I get super excited!

We’ve been hearing about Lieu Dit for a while, a partnership of Santa Barbara native Justin Willett and restaurant nerd Eric Railsback, two longtime friends. Justin has worked in wineries from Arcadian Winery to Tyler Winery and has always been focused solely upon Santa Barbara fruit.

Eric earned his chops at southern California mainstays like the Wine Cask and the Hungry Cat, but then really got famous at Osteria Mozza (crazy great wine list) and then Gordon Ramsey in LA - you know who that is, right? Ramsey doesn’t yell that much in real life.

Gordon Ramsay LA is where Eric started appearing on everyone’s radar as a smart and dedicated wine guy, and then he was off to Michael Mina’s RN74 in San Francisco – becoming a part of the inner circle of northern California sommeliers, building an international palate that could be harnessed to utilize any grape to its ideal iteration. He came back to Santa Barbara to open Les Marchands Wine Bar & Merchant and since 2011 he and Justin have earned a cultish following for these wines.

This unctuous pink wine is dry, stony, fruity, lengthy and 100% Pinot Noir deliciousness. 70 degrees and sunny this weekend...what are you drinking?

We've been trying hundreds of new products lately in order to select just a few for featured spots in the store (I know, someone has to do it!), and the Baracchi O'Lillo Toscana Rosso is one of the better wines we have tried.

Though the Baracchi family has been growing vines and making wine since 1860, the goal for Riccardo Baracchi has been to do new things, to push the family, if not the wider world of Tuscan wine, into new and sometimes weird places.

Growing Viognier in Chianti or making Sangiovese into a metodo classico sparkling wine is decidedly weird. But with vineyards on the hills facing Cortona and overlooking the panorama of the Val di Chiana stretching from Siena to Perugia in Umbria, they have benefited from their creativity as well as the smarts of famed oenologist and agronomist Stefano Chioccioli.

I don't really want to be all like "Oh you really need to buy this wine..." when it costs $30 per bottle...but honestly you really should try this wine...even though it is $30 per bottle.

It is one of the best red wines I have had this year, and drinks like a Chateauneuf du Pape 2x the price.

Heady Grenache and elegant Pinot Noir might seem as far away from each other as Moscow and Memphis. But Denis Cheron, the owner of Domaine du Grand Montmirail, had just moved from Burgundy when he created a co-op in the southern Rhone in the 60s. He handled a lot of different estates’ wines but he thought something very special was happening at Grand Montmirail and, when the owner decided to put it up for sale, he offered it first to Cheron who he felt had so improved his wines.
 
It’s a remarkable spot, with vineyards nestled underneath the great toothy Dentelles de Montmirail looming a hundred yards above them, and with Mount Ventoux jutting up in the distance. This isolated spot is on a long gentle slope, surrounded by rosemary, thyme and sage. The soils are well drained, uplifted ocean floor, littered with limestone and granite, but there are three underground springs so, while hot years can stress so many southern Rhone wines, Montmirail stays cool and calm.
 
Denis’ son Yves, who studied in Burgundy, has refurbished an old convent on the property and made it his family house. The domaine now covers almost 90 acres, all planted exclusively on the hillsides and terraces, known locally as banquettes. The vines benefit from a remarkably sunny exposure while being sheltered from the windy winter mistral by a sort of natural amphitheater.  The altitude of the vineyards varies between 1000 and 1200 feet — among the highest in Gigondas, something that helps the wine retain some acidity.
 
I know, I know; we got all wine geeky on you. But some wines just deserve it.

Honestly, we can't help ourselves. We just love doing deals...especially when prices on everything from Doritos to gasoline seem to be going through the roof. You guys know we are gonna look after your pocketbook as if it was our own!

So many people have been asking over the last several months "When is Benières going back on sale?" and we're all like "Probably Memorial Day" and finally we just decided - "Let's give the people what they want."



We told you back in December that for the 2nd year in a row Benières Pinot Noir and Chardonnay didn't win the voting here for our Wine of the Year, but maybe they should have. I’m certainly not shy about my love of all things Gil Family - especially Clio and El Nido. Given the supply constraints of those wines, I was excited to hear a few years ago that the Gil Family created a project to “compliment" those wines - Bodegas Morca.
 
As I’ve told you before, when I say compliment I also mean replicate 😂. For instance, the Bodegas Morca “Touran” is in the same bottle as El Nido, packed in the same two packs as El Nido, in the same 4 bottle case as El Nido. The “Morca” is packed in the same case as Clio etc. etc. You get the idea.
 
One of the foundations of our business model is when we get a better deal, you get a better deal. So when we were recently offered 224 six packs of Morca where we could offer them to you at the lowest price ever offered in the US, we jumped at the chance.
 
What’s the price? $29.99 per bottle. I would liken it to if Clio was offered at $29.99. It’s not in that “everyday” price category, but this pops into my “weekend” wine price range.
 
And the quality? At this price it is almost unmatched. As an example, in the last 5 vintages there are just NINE wines rated by Vinous, from ANY country, that scored higher than 94 for less than $30.

What makes Le Ragose Valpolicella so special?

Valpolicella may be the most misunderstood place in Italy. Seen in earlier days as a region of little importance beyond fruity wines, there are grave differences between places, producers and wines. Le Ragose is high elevation in a sweet spot: 70 acres in one entire holding at nearly 1200 feet. Enologist Arnaldo Galli and his wife Marta have owned this estate since 1969 and, while difficult to work, they chose it because of its difficulty: the terraced vines on steep slopes, above the fog.

They are one of the few growers (only 5) in all of Valpolicella that does not buy grapes. Marta Galli, often referred to as “La Signora del Vino,” was voted “Winemaker of the World” in 1990 by her peers, in part because of her influence in re-establishing Valpolicella as a classic in Italian wine and helping it achieve a DOC designation. At her level of Valpolicella, the wine is both utterly drinkable and complex.

Finding Sancerre for less $25 these days is kinda like hunting for truffles - its extremely difficult, but if you are successful you are in for a treat...and we are in for a treat today!

Sancerre is a funny thing, 100% Sauvignon Blanc for the white wines, theoretically, a bit softer and rounder than their next-door neighbor Pouilly Fume (though I defy anyone to really tell the difference outside of people who live there), but more and more tasting like something from the New World.

How, you ask?

It’s okay, let’s just say you asked. With climate change, the wines are getting even rounder and fruitier than before – I’m not sure that’s a bad thing, the wine part of it anyway. But whereas Olivier Richard’s family legacy in the southern Rhone has been, like all wineries down there, sometimes threatened by increasing temperatures and climate extremes, other places have benefited. Richard’s Rhone wine-making grandfather, family lore says, always wanted to grow Sauvignon Blanc and so, as Richard has grown a small negociant business that expanded to include wines from Sancerre, he had to name the wines after his grandfather. Thus it is Lucien Reymond Sancerre, not Olivier Richard Sancerre. Grandpa’s smiling somewhere.

If Sauvignon Blanc is your thing (and remember, warm weather is coming 😁), you'll want to try a bottle of this!

In the near decade we have carried this wine, it has gone on sale at the $9.99 price point just four times. Yes - four times in a decade. Each time was like a feeding frenzy. Like we literally could not keep the wine on the shelf.

It was chaos. Controlled chaos, but chaos nonetheless.

I get it. Snowvale at $9.99 represents some pretty unreal value. We've even seen someone selling this wine for $31! (Picture below)

The wine just works. Tuesday night spaghetti? Boom. Wednesday night burgers. Done. Saturday night Netflix. But of course.

We have 560 cases to hopefully get us to Sunday.
