We tasted this wine back in June and ordered it right away. Thanks to whatever is going on in the world of overseas shipping, the wine finally arrived last week!

A follow up taste test upon arrival may have, in my humble opinion, moved this wine to the front of blockbuster hits this holiday season.

What is going on?

Well, looking back on our 15 years of serving you, we have never carried much Bordeaux (it just gets too expensive). In addition, I can't think of any offer we have made for a Bordeaux less than $25. Every time we taste them, they taste...well...they tend to taste cheap. Nobody wants to deal with that...

I'll be honest, this is one of the best $15 deals we will run this year.

It's the top Bordeaux blend from Alcance that started out as a $50 offering back in the 2013 vintage, moved down into the mid to high $20's and after the 2016 vintage it will be discontinued at the winery. We swooped in and now you get some seriously primo wine for only $14.99.

Chile has been attracting interest from the French wine world for a century and a half and, to be a bit too candid, it hasn’t always gone well. The French tended to think that their winemaking methods were perfect and only needed to be applied to Chilean vineyards and greatness would ensue. It didn’t work out like that and they were slow to notice and change.

Baron Phillippe de Rothschild got together with Concha y Toro and created Almaviva, so there were some great Franco-Chilean projects. And, of course, the Chileans on their own were figuring it out, but others were adapting as well and a lot of those transplants were from the good ol’ US of A. Famously Robert Mondavi helped create Seña and Cali winemakers like Randy Ullom (of Kendall Jackson) headed there too. His work at Alcance has been exemplary, and this wine is a prime example of the quality they have been producing.

This is one of those deals that sadly will be one time only. But gee wiz, we are going to enjoy as much as we can for as long as we can!!

Last year we took the photo above of some decorations in Wilmington that happened to include a bottle of wine that we carry and decided we just HAD to put it on sale during the week of Halloween. We had so much fun with it we decided to do it again this year!

What's up with the wine?

I'm not gonna lie. This label is a little out there. Maybe it's a lot out there. But when we saw it in a box of samples sitting on our desk a few months ago it certainly stood out. But would the wine be any good?

It was insane.

The Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre varietals are happy bedfellows from anywhere, and the Vellas family sites throughout Mediterranean help create wine with balance as well as intensity. As for the name Double Ripasse? In wine terms, ripasse is to press or to squeeze, and that typically means someone has made wine from grapes but held onto the skins. Then they dump fresh must onto those once-squeezed skins, using the new juice to soak more flavor (and often tannin) from the skins.

Do it twice? Double the pleasure, double the fun :)

So spice up your front porch decorations a bit, and drink some nice wine while you're at it!

One of our distributors approached us two weeks ago with a proposal. They had bought too much Val de Salis Cabernet and needed to trim their inventory to get in line with company goals. Could we help them out?

Obviously we said yes! For the last two years this has been a staple in our everyday wine lineup!

What's up with the wine?

The Mas family’s Cabernet is just as New World-ish as anything from California, but winemaker Jean-Claude Mas is one of those personalities in the Languedoc for whom winemaking is part of his heritage, after generations have built this large enterprise. For Mas, it’s still just as much a winery as a business, and it’s genuinely a passion, one that he came to after he jumped into his own businesses away from the family. Wine from around the world became a hobby and then he started an organic wine company in England – if you know any of the folks who’ve done that sort of thing, you know they’ve drunk the Kool-aid. He moved to Miami and started importing French foods and wines. Then he worked for years in Bordeaux and in 1995 was lured back home to Pézenas, which you should visit someday because it’s the charming birthplace of France’s greatest playwright, Moliere. The vines at this fourth generation estate start at around 1000 feet in elevation within an eighteen-mile long triangle, sheltered on the north by the Black Mountain, and sloping down to the Mediterranean, with the river Hérault as the eastern boundary.

While the wine may taste as big, ripe and delicious as something from California, you won't find anything from the Golden State that packs this much punch at below $10 per bottle.

As for the Balcon? It delivers everything you want in a great rosé in spades. This unctuous pink wine is dry, stony, fruity, lengthy. Comprised of Grenache, Grenache Gris and Mourvedre, there’s a lot more here than many a rosé that you’ve tasted before.

In the most recent iteration, the palest rosés have been ascendant – Provence, the archetypal French vacationland, is also the poster child for what modern rosé ought to be. Pale, quenching, lip-smacking. SWIMBAD Rosé embodies that. It's is a classic G-S-M blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, and as an ideal French rosé, this has significant weight and character.

If Super Tuscan wines are your thing, this is a wine you need to be drinking. Il Fauno is one of those wines that has a universal effect on people. It makes the drinker think, "Why haven't I known about this until now?" and sometimes "Why do I need to spend more than $25 on wine when stuff like this exists!".

It's that good.

Tenuta di Arceno is an ancient Tuscan estate, massive in scale at over 2500 acres, producing some of the most interesting and powerful wines in the Chianti Classico DOCG region and under the Toscana IGT designation. The estate is in the southern portion of Chianti Classico in the all-important commune of Castelnuovo Berardenga where Il Fauno is produced.

Here Merlot is the dominant grape, at about half the blend, with Cabernet Franc playing a supporting role and only a bit of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. It’s grown in the rather warmer sunnier portion of the estate and, with more clay, famously a soil that Merlot can, in the right places, do great things.

So let us drink a wonderful Super Tuscan tonight, and perhaps begin planning that great family vacation to Italy we always wanted to take. Or let's just drink some good wine because it is Wednesday and we want to 😁

Along France’s border with Italy, between the Mediterranean coast and the continental region of Savoie, the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence is traversed by the Durance river. Vineyards are mostly found on the valley hills for maximum sunlight exposure. So the days are Mediterranean warm but the high altitude and the presence of the mountains makes for much cooler nights as air from the Alps descends into the vineyards.

These conditions make for delicious rosé. While this has the look and feel of Provençal rosé, it's a bit lighter and airier. And in case you wondered who Lou Pichoun is, that’s Provençal slang for the youngest, as in, the most favored child.

Nothing says Friday like awesome Pinot Noir from Far Niente at the lowest price in the US of course...and 40% less than Total Wine :)

En Route has had a good life thus far, but being founded by the team at the legendary Far Niente Winery gives you a pretty good chance at being a successful winery. It’s not too surprising that Far Niente would take an interest in creating a Pinot Noir focused project. But unlike the Far Niente style with Chardonnay (fat, rich, powerful), En Route has chosen a more nuanced personality for their wine. Comprised of grapes from their Northern Spy Vineyard in Russian River Valley’s Green Valley (an abandoned apple orchard, hence the name) as well as some grapes from their Amber Ridge Vineyard (on rolling terrain in the upper Middle Reach area of the Russian River Valley) this is a blend of clones and cool spots (even a bit of Manzana Vineyard). Djion clones like 114 and 115 are mixed with the more classically California based Pommard. In general, this wins on nuance and length, more than weightiness, and that’s just how Pinot should be.

So let's keep it short and sweet for today. TGIF!

You know it is a good day when you can offer a top wine from one of the most iconic names in all of wine at the lowest price in the US!

Who is Max?

Max Shubert, the irascible but brilliant creator of Penfold’s Grange Hermitage, the most famous wine of the Southern Hemipshere. In the 1950s Australia just drank sweet, fortified wines (don’t chortle, Americans did the same back then). Max created a wine that reminded him of great Bordeaux and his bosses responded by telling him, if he ever did it again, they would fire him.

But Max being Max, he kept making Grange on the sly and then, though he never really owned up to it, he sent some bottles of Grange to an important blind wine tasting in England and it won. His bosses wisely chose not to terminate him after all. I met Max a few decades later and he was still irascible but that’s another story.

Meanwhile, you should drink this Shiraz named for him; it’s far friendlier than he was.

The importer for one of the biggest breakout stars of 2021 offered us an "end of summer deal" a few weeks ago, and the wine has finally arrived! As you know, one of the cornerstones of our operating model is when we get a deal - you get a deal! So here we have SWIMBAD white wine at my favorite price point :) Hey - yesterday we did say we needed more $7.99 in our lives!

One thing I have been loving about this wine, aside from the fact it is delicious and the packaging is awesome, is that it just fits perfectly in the fridge. Like I don't have to make room for the bottle, I don't have to try and cram it in one of those side trays, and it doesn't weigh so much I am worried my shelves are going to buckle 😂. It is a side benefit, but one I love nonetheless...

This blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Colombard is just an overall pleasurable experience. It kinda embodies both the classic style of traditional French white wine and the very modern pursuit of fresh fruity flavors.

As we've said before, there is so much about wine that is subjective. If we are to understand how traditional wines came to be, it’s to know that pleasure is the goal. Of course, we could demand more but why is that necessary? Isn’t pleasure enough? Shouldn’t we enjoy wines for what they are and what they offer? If the last year has taught us nothing else, it is that seeing the downside of everything is easy. Our goal is to find the positive. As James Joyce said of his epic Ulysses, the book should end with the most positive word in the English language. "Yes.”

So I'm going to continue to say "yes" to SWIMBAD white...and at $7.99 I think I'm going to say "yes" to a six pack 😂

You guys didn't think we were going to kick off the month of October with anything less than an awesome deal, right?

What makes this wine so awesome?

The wine business can be a weird place, and the story behind this wine is a prime example.

So there was a wine made by a Guenoc Winery and Langtry Winery partnership called "Lillie's Collection Victorian Claret" for a California wine powerhouse called BevMo.

Guenoc and Langtry decide to split up. Langtry owns the trademark to "Lillie's Collection". Guenoc owns the trademark to "Victorian Claret".

Potential problem? Indeed.

Langtry continues producing the wine for BevMo but has to put "Red Wine" on the label instead of "Victorian Claret". BevMo says that doesn't work - now they don't want the wine anymore.

...and that brings us to how we are able to offer this gem at an absolutely silly price.

Langtry called us, and we were able to take the entire production off the hands of Langtry. Problem solved!

Langtry Farms was originally founded back in the 19th Century by entertainer Lillie Langtry, who purchased 4,200 acres in Northern California around 1888. Today, Langtry Estate makes up over 21,000 acres and is one of the largest continuous land holdings in all of California.

Their Petite Sirah, which makes up the base of this blend, is one of the best Petite values in the North Coast. Both powerful and well balanced, it's a prime example of what stunning values can come out of the North Coast when left at the hands of a master like winemaker Eric Stine.

So BevMo's loss is your gain - at least until we run out!

You guys didn't think there was going to be a new Eric Solomon white wine release without a red wine to go with it, did you?

Welcome Trencalos Red, what I believe may be one of the only new Eric Solomon red wines under $15 in the last several years.

There are lots of folks who import wines; and Charlotte is home to one of the most revered and influential wine importers in the business today - Eric Solomon. His wine portfolio from Spain and France is scary good, especially if you are an importer trying to compete with him. His amazing stable of wines includes Marcoux, Giraud, Clos Erasmus, Mas D'en Compte, Janasse, Closa Battlet, Roger Sabon, Roget Champault, La Peria, Chateau Tirecul, Jean Paul Droin...and the list goes on and on.

His properties are all the rage at the moment among the critics, and for good reason. They make utterly lush and delicious wines, and yet they are not wines that have sold their souls (ya know, with high alcohol, over-extraction, too much oak and the like) in order to get blessedly high scores from he-who-must-not-be-named. These wines are rich and impressive but they not only retain their souls, they HAVE soul. Character. Personality. Whatever.

Solomon's book is an embarrassment of riches. We are delighted that he lives in Charlotte and that we have the opportunity to offer so many of his fabulous wines. The Trencalos offering today is a perfect example of why he has been so successful. Old vine red wine from Terra Alta, where vines create wine less powerful than Priorat (at $100+) but still rich, elegant, and easy to drink.

It's tough for me to explain how much I like this wine. It very well may be the best value wine I have ever tasted. Find me some other wine that delivers this kind of experience at $7.99...I just don't think it's possible.

Centuries ago the DO of Almansa produced high quality wines, albeit at that time they were sweet ones. The locals used Alicante Bouschet, but today they call it Garnacha Tintorera, and for the most part all the producers have nixed the sweet part of the equation. In the case of Carmita, they mix the Garnacha with 30% Monastrell to make this wickedly powerful red wine.

It's easy drinking, big, rich and all around delicious.

Oh, did we mention that the winemaking team behind this gem are involved in some of the most celebrated wine projects in Spain? So the street cred, in addition to everything else, is off the charts.

What's up with the wine?

Amongst the many still unknown wine regions of Spain is Terra Alta, with limestone hills set above the Mediterranean, surprisingly near better known spots like Priorat and Penedes. Eric Solomon's specialty is finding these regions, locating the best producer in the region, and bringing them to market.

This Garnatxa Blanca (white Grenache) is an excellent example of why this region is about to become the new thing in value wine. Refreshing, tangy, bracing, crisp and with mineral notes in the finish. Oh, it's also 100% Organic.

When you make some of the best Pinot Noir in Sancerre, and arguably some of the best Sauvignon Blanc on planet earth, the wine does not sit around very long.

So sadly we are here to tell you that this is your last call for Vacheron, and who in the world knows when it will return.

I know I've been drinking the Pinot Noir with a nice chill right out of the fridge for the last 4 weeks, and I may have shed a little tear when I heard what is in our stores is all that is left.

I bought 6 of each this morning though, as I won't have happen to me what has already happened a bunch this year. I find a wine I love, then it runs out, and I don't have any to drink.

What did we tell you about Vacheron when it landed back last month? Well...

Last time we were able to offer you Vacheron Sancerre Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc it was 2016.

There just is not a lot of it made, most of it sells in France, and what does come into the US mostly goes to Michelin Star type restaurants in New York, Boston, Los Angeles and Chicago.

Back in 2016, 84 cases - total - came into the US of the Pinot Noir. A cursory run around the interwebs searching for current vintage Vacheron will show places with “9 bottles in stock” and massive quantities like that 👀

What is so crazy good about Vacheron?

Every region has its champions, even if it’s unfair to single out particular producers when the ancient Loire Valley has so many heroes. But cousins Jean-Laurent and Jean-Dominique Vacheron are among those great winemakers - even if you've never heard their names before...

If Sauvignon Blanc is your thing - this is by some estimations the best that is made on planet earth. It exists on a whole other level.

If you love Pinot? I’d put this stuff up against even the greats like Dujac at 10x the price. I’m not kidding…not even a little. And in a vintage as lush as 2018, this is just plain fabulous stuff.

Pro tip - chill the Pinot Noir before drinking, just as you would the Sauvignon Blanc. You won't be disappointed!

You can read more about Gail Wines HERE, but long story short is this: Dan O’Brien is a working class Boston area fellow who fell into the wine trade via the restaurant biz. He moved to the Bay Area to help run a wine program at an elite restaurant and found himself next to restaurant and wine superstars who showed him the opportunities growing just up the road, and he eventually took the red pill and jumped in as a winemaker.

This Cabernet was a random sample sent to us a few weeks ago, and all I can tell you is that for $20 this wine is on point.

There is plenty of stuff coming out of Sonoma and even more so Napa at 4x the price that I would put this up against...I'm not kidding, not even a little bit. It’s also rare to see single vineyard organic Cabernet offerings hit this price point.

If Cabernet Sauvignon is your thing, you’re gonna want to give this a try! If Cabernet Sauvignon is not your thing, maybe try it anyway? I kinda think it's that good. One of those wines that everyone will like (famous last words...)

Barbera probably was once California’s potential deadly weapon – we will never know because most of those vines disappeared a few decades ago. As is appropriate to the tangy fruit complexity of the grape, this crushable wine is fermented and aged only in stainless steel and cement. No oak needed because this is a wine you just want to drink at a measurable velocity.
