Verbo Malvasia

The region of Basilicata represents the arch of the boot that comprises the shape of Italy. Aglianico is the famed grape there but surprisingly they also make crisp and balanced white wine, thanks to the volcanic origin and elevation of the vineyards. The Malvasia grape is at home here though we still don’t really know where it was born. The prevailing theory is that the name derives from the Greek port of Monemvasia but it’s important to understand that there is no single grape called Malvasia; there are many versions. Nonetheless, the particular style that is Malvasia di Basilicata is delightful and distinct: honeyed, floral and lemony.

Verraco Ridge Pinot Noir

California has had several Pinot Noir moments. There were some vineyards in Napa in the 70s and 80s - then people got smart and headed closer to the Pacific Ocean. Like Monterey. Open to the ocean, where vineyards are hot and sunny in the morning and cold and windy in the afternoon - these sorts of conditions make for brighter fruits in the red wines, many of them crisp and even slightly tart, you know, like Pinot Noir is. Like this wine is.

Vinum Pinot Noir

Richard Bruno and Chris Condos were more than mere wine enthusiasts, though they certainly began as that. Each is a UC Davis alumnus and at this late date can be considered old hands in Napa Valley. They continue to represent pretty awesome value, something that’s harder to find in California. Central Coast Pinot is still a reasonable proposition though, and this is a single vineyard bottling. The smoky nose is courtesy of Francois Freres barrels that spice up the wine over 18 months.

Von Strasser Diamond Cab

Rudy von Strasser intended to be the “King of Hard-Cider”, but in 1980 he was working at Robert Mondavi Winery, found himself drawn to study at U.C. Davis and shortly found himself interning at Chateau Lafite-Rothschild, followed by stints at Trefethen and Newton. In 1990, he and his wife bought property on Diamond Mountain, next door to the legendary Diamond Creek.

Yalumba Antique Tawny

For anybody who knows Aussie stickies, this stuff is legendary. Great and sticky Muscat with a few decades of age on it, then aged again in the hot northern riverland in northern Victoria. If you don't like this, then there is seriously no hope left for you in this world. It's that good.
