Chardonnay

Absolu Chardonnay

This is grown on eroded limestone and clay in one of the newer classified spots along the Mediterranean Sea. Night harvesting helps retain acidity and that’s important in a place that might as well be a beach in Capri were it not for the surrounding vines and the winds coming down off the mountains to the north and west. This is fermented partly in stainless steel and partly in barrel, but all of the wine spends a year in French oak.

Sauvignon Blanc

Antoine de la Farge L'Enfant Rebelle

European AOC system sets the boundaries of any winegrowing region; the idea is that the best and appropriate area is reserved for the AOC’s. That means that there are other places that can make high quality wine but simply don’t fit within the AOC boundaries. That includes this site just outside of the established Loire Valley vineyards where delicious Sauvignon Blanc can be made, similarly to Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé, but not at similar pricing.

Sauvignon Blanc

Antoine de la Farge Sancerre

This small domaine in the heart of Menetou-Salon was created in 2003 by Laurence and Géraud de Farge. Laurence’s father Bernard was involved in setting up the Menetou-Salon appellation in 1959, one of those “other” areas of the Loire Valley that are providing great value. But Sancerre is still hard to beat, especially in an era of climate change.

White Blend

Belcoop White

Grenache Blanc is a work in progress, but only because the consumer is still discovering it. With enough sunshine, Grenache Blanc can develop weight and power. The wine is fermented like Chardonnay in some ways, though the stainless steel variety; its lees are stirred in the tank, creating greater richness and texture, and Grenache Blanc is very happy that way. You will be too.

Chardonnay

Belleplane Chardonnay

In France, the grape is sometimes secondary - it’s the place that counts. The French label police have loosened up and they’re okay with Chardonnay being on this label. It matters if you’re close to the coast, or up in the mountains, and with a grape like Chardonnay, cooler, higher elevation sites are best. A third of the wine is barrel-fermented - the rest is in stainless steel, with enough lees-stirring to fatten up the wine and round it out.

Benieres Chardonnay

Love Sonoma Cutrer? Try Benieres Chardonnay! The vast vineyards of France’s Languedoc hold many well-known grapes, including Chardonnay that is friendly and accessible. This one is gathered from organic vineyards on the Aspères plateau with its excellent marl and limestone soils. The winemaking is straightforward – stainless steel fermenters and just enough lees stirring to enrich the texture and flavors. We love finding wines like this!

Bleu Blanc Thau

This blend of Picpoul,Terret, and Colombard is so tasty, so refreshingly crisp (but still weighty enough to matter) and, dare we say it, a freaking value that it practically crawled into our bag and said take me home the first time we tasted it.

Grüner Veltiner

Brunn Gruner Veltliner

The Austrians are both new and ancient with their wines: this is in a liter bottle, it’s all the rage; all the cool kids are going with liters these days. But winemaker Karl Steinschaden and his family are also focused on tradition, harvesting solely by hand from old estate vines with low yields, doing only native ferments. A few months in large Slovenian oak vats and you have bracing crisp, clean and absurdly drinkable Grüner.

Chardonnay

Cape Charles Chardonnay

When it comes to Carneros, it’s the proximity to San Pablo Bay that matters. Every time it heats up in central Napa or even in the Central Valley, the air rises and is replaced by the cold, foggy stuff flowing under and through the Golden Gate Bridge and all along San Pablo Bay. The sun burns it off each morning and grapes that require acidity for balance (like Chardonnay) thrive in it.

Sauvignon Blanc

Cape Charles Sauvignon Blanc

After killing it with the AVERÆN project in Oregon, the Banshee gang is hard at work again in France. They’ve grabbed some vineyards in Gascony and we’re smart enough to snag some of their early efforts. There’s a lot of Sauvignon Blanc grown in these spots, but what these guys excel at are wines like this one: poised, more bright melon and citrus - just the way it should be.

Cary Potet Montagny

Cary Potet is an ideal example of hidden Burgundy; the label disappeared after being imported by a small producer for years. Some importers were adept scroungers of the French retail shelves and years later they spotted the Cary Potet label. These folks, the Desfontaine family, have been making wine for 12 generations and their family motto is ‘Ex Nihilo Nihil’: nothing comes from nothing. But from hard work, delicious wine can be coaxed from the old stones.

C'est pas la Mer a Boire Picpoul

Here’s what you should know about Picpoul de Pinet: it’s never bad; and only sometimes good. So there’s a lot to be said for grapes that never suck. About the time I decided I was no longer going to think about the Picpoul grape, I tasted this Picpoul de Pinet and it was utterly delicious.
