Love Sonoma Cutrer? Try Benieres Chardonnay! The vast vineyards of France’s Languedoc hold many well-known grapes, including Chardonnay that is friendly and accessible. This one is gathered from organic vineyards on the Aspères plateau with its excellent marl and limestone soils. The winemaking is straightforward – stainless steel fermenters and just enough lees stirring to enrich the texture and flavors. We love finding wines like this!

The south of France has been home to a sea of vines for centuries, though its heyday was the late 19th century after the newly built railroad allowed shipments to fill the carafes of Parisian cafes. Cotes de Thau is gaining notoriety for its rosé wines grown beneath the former volcano of Agde, with a mix of garrigue, sand, nearby sea and lagoons. This is a blend of Cinsault and Merlot made in a crisp, clean, even racy style of pink wine.

Chuck and his family, as you probably know, are virtual dynamos in the California wine business, with Joe Wagner, his son and the grandson of Chuck Sr. one of the great pioneers of Napa, producing Pinot Noir in Oregon as well. Chuck and his other son Charlie and daughter Jenny, continue to make Caymus the grand Napa benchmark that it is. So when he makes a tasty little blend like this, it makes sense to buy some and enjoy them tonight.

Boulee Cordot

Syrah is planted throughout Mediterranean France, and has a strong reputation dating back to the mid-19th century when Bordeaux chateaux would blend a small amount into their wines to improve them. Alicante? It’s one of the rare Teinturier grapes, having red juice as well as red skins and in the right spots it can be powerful and juicy, not just inky. Together they make for a very modern, fascinating, if untraditional, wine.

Brunn Gruner Veltliner

The Austrians are both new and ancient with their wines: this is in a liter bottle, it’s all the rage; all the cool kids are going with liters these days. But winemaker Karl Steinschaden and his family are also focused on tradition, harvesting solely by hand from old estate vines with low yields, doing only native ferments. A few months in large Slovenian oak vats and you have bracing crisp, clean and absurdly drinkable Grüner.

Canteperdrix Anthologie Vacqueyras

Anthologie Vacqueyras an expression of Grenache and Syrah from one of the first villages within the Cotes du Rhone Villages to be labeled on its own (Gigondas was the first). Like other areas of the eastern side of the southern Rhone, Mount Ventoux looms large above it and allows cooler air to drain towards the valley (and Vacqueyras) below. But Vacqueyras is closer in resemblance to the rich decadence of Gigondas.

Canteperdrix Vim Solis

Vinsobres is a red wine only appellation that sees a more diverse set of soils than most of the other Rhone AOCs. The usual intense Mistral wind is accompanied by a cooler, gentler Pontias wind, making this one of the cooler sites of the southern Rhone. The wines have a bit more nerve: think of cranberry instead of black cherry, more tangy Grenache than rich, robust Syrah.
