Pinot Grigio/Pinot Gris

Wunsch et Mann Pinot Gris 'Steingrubler'

Steingrubler' — try saying that five times fast. Legend has it this grape came to Alsace in 1565, brought back by a general returning from battle in Tokaj, Hungary — which is exactly why it used to be called Tokay Pinot Gris. Whatever the real story, the wine doesn't need it: rich, textured, baked apple and toasted nut, with real weight behind it.

Pinot Noir

Wunsch et Mann Pinot Noir 'Coteaux des Cerises'

Picture an afternoon in a Wettolsheim orchard — birds overhead, bees drifting lazily between the blossoms, warm sun, nowhere to be. You know how these afternoons tend to go: one thing leads to another. This Pinot Noir bottles that particular kind of afternoon. The Mann family's grown grapes on these hillsides since 1793. Pour it anytime you're in the mood to find out where it leads.

Pinot Noir

Wunsch et Mann Pinot Noir 'Hengst'

Hengst' means stallion in German — no, that's not a comment on the winemaker. Legend has it the name comes from the heavy horses once needed to plow this dense clay-and-limestone slope; others say it's because the wine itself has always been this powerful. Either way, the name's been on this vineyard since the 9th century. The Mann family's only been at it since 1793 — new blood, by comparison. Give it room to breathe — it still bucks a little.

Riesling

Wunsch et Mann Riesling 'Steingrubler'

Riesling's often called the 'king' of Alsace grapes — and on a site like Steingrubler, planted over what was once a 13th-century stone quarry, it wears the crown well. Unlike Rieslings from Germany or elsewhere, Alsace Grand Cru Riesling is always vinified bone-dry, and the limestone-marl soil here is what drives its signature minerality. Despite the bone-dry style, the acidity and concentration mean this one only gets better with 5–10 years in the cellar. No pressure, though — it's already drinking great right now.

White Wine

Wunsch et Mann Sylvaner Reserve

Wait, didn't I just see 'Sylvania' on the lightbulb I put in the other day? Close — but this is Sylvaner, and it's been quietly lighting up Alsace tables since long before anyone plugged anything in. The Mann family's grown it on these Wettolsheim hillsides since 1793 — four generations. Same grape, same hillside.

Zinfandel

Z/N Zinfandel

I know, I know, Zinfandel is the same grape as Italy’s Primitivo. But is it? Even the best Primitivo doesn’t have the fruitiness, the power, the sheer intensity of California’s best Zins. And how do we describe that fruitiness? I always find that it has something like more red fruits than black fruits, with a little hint of red currant jelly right at the end that is part of the easy friendliness of the grape.
