Copain, now owned by the Jackson Family, was once the doyenne of the “balanced” wine set. That’s to say, it was not uber-rich or possibly even sweet like so many Chardonnays a few decades ago (and, okay, still today).

Founder Wells Guthrie was a hero to many of us who felt like he had cracked the code to California Chardonnay. Buuuuuuuuut - like all crazy popular brands, Wells then got bought out and we all wondered what was next.

In truth, the Chardonnays have stayed true to the founder’s vision. So maybe we’re going in the same direction as Wells had already pointed us.
