The Palace Thief #2

Most of the Napa OGs have been bought out or at least changed hands numerous times. The winery behind Palace Thief Napa, starting in 1969, has remained owned and run by the same family. Now, it’s a third-generation project but the critical piece, the vineyards, is really what has allowed this family to achieve such demonstrated excellence. The Cabs are firm, powerful and very classically Napa-esque.

Roche Bousseau Anjou Rouge

The Château de la Roche Bousseau is first mentioned in the 15th century, but it was destroyed following the French Revolution. The Regnard family bought their first vines in 1791 around that time, now they own about 200 acres of vines. This is typical of what they produce: absurdly underpriced 100% Cabernet Franc from older vines with bright fruit and slightly herbal notes that are both fascinating and perfect for you to toss chicken on the grill.

Vineyard 29 CRU

an early cult favorite, Vineyard 29 was founded in 1989 with the planting of a 3-acre vineyard by David Abreu and cuttings from neighboring Grace Family Vineyards. In 2000, owners Chuck and Anne McMinn bought the historic Aida vineyard to add to the winery’s portfolio. The 2021 Cru blends the estate vineyard, from a hillside just at the “pinch” of Napa Valley’s hourglass shape, with Aida Vineyard fruit, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 20 months in French oak. This is sexy, sexy stuff.

Snowvale Sierra Foothills

Since the 2012 vintage we have been partnering with Banshee Wines to select some insane high end left over barrels from prestigious wineries and bottle them under their Snowvale and Willowlake labels. The results have been pretty eye opening. We’ve seen wine from Dominus, Hidden Ridge, maybe or maybe not Dunn and some other crazy names.

Austin Hope "Austin"

The “Austin” wine is a multiple vintage blend of vineyards in the region; think of it as the ultimate winemaker’s craft for his own table.

Highland Falls

"Mountain-grown, it’s the richest kind,” as coffee commercials used to say, but it’s also true of Cabernet. Foley Family's pedigree doesn’t hurt either: the guys who bring you Merus, Chalone and Chalk Hill Wines are behind the powerhouse Highland Falls lineup too.

Mazet de Palombiere

Nicolas Vellas is one of the old-line guys who has been buying selected sites to grow his Les Naturels de Nicolas Vellas wine portfolio. For four generations his family has collected great but forgotten vineyards. It’s time people started paying attention – that’s easy because at these prices, they’re easy to notice.

Dosoris Lane Proprietary Red

Maybe one of the most hyped up wines this year, Dosoris Lane is all about showing what type of crazy quality you can produce for under $15. Think black pepper notes from a little Syrah. The black fruits in the middle suggest a little bit of Cabernet; the red fruits and white pepper hint at Grenache. Put it all together and you have some epic red wine from the sunny south of France, with expansive and bright flavors.

Chateau Eyquem Le Belvedere

The Bayle and Carreau families bought this 17th century manor house, named for Louis d’Eyquem, nephew of Michel de Montaigne, writer and philosopher and often called the inventor of the essay. With clay-limestone soil and a view of the spot where the Dordogne and the Garonne rivers meet, this is planted to 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Malbec.

Chateau Landreau Cuvee La Roseau

In the 1950s, two families joined forces; the Carreaus as vineyard experts and the Bayles as winemakers, but they had both been in their respective business for more than a century. They’ve since collected more vineyards from the family and from neighbors, including Château Landreau in 1995, a 40-acre estate in Côtes de Bourg with red clay soils and a view of the Gironde River. This is 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and very, very classic.
