Grenache Blanc is a work in progress, but only because the consumer is still discovering it. With enough sunshine, Grenache Blanc can develop weight and power. The wine is fermented like Chardonnay in some ways, though the stainless steel variety; its lees are stirred in the tank, creating greater richness and texture, and Grenache Blanc is very happy that way. You will be too.

After killing it with the AVERÆN project in Oregon, the Banshee gang is hard at work again in France. They’ve grabbed some vineyards in Gascony and we’re smart enough to snag some of their early efforts. There’s a lot of Sauvignon Blanc grown in these spots, but what these guys excel at are wines like this one: poised, more bright melon and citrus - just the way it should be.

Within Cabardès, a prime site in the ocean of vines that is Languedoc-Roussillon, the Ramés are growing many of the same grapes as their neighbors but using them to sometimes unusual ends. They call some of these wines “les Dissidents” which are “delicate blends concocted in jars of 150 or 500 litres, and in casks of 2,000 litres.” This one is 100% Vermentino (they call it Rolle there) and it has layers and layers.

There was a time when Bordeaux Blanc was a joke. Then the 2000s happened and suddenly all the white wine from Bordeaux was delicious, they are better than ever. This blend of 40% Sauvignon Blanc, 40% Sémillon and 20% Muscadelle is classic and still very modern and completely compelling. It’s been matured in new French oak so it’s not simple. Bring oysters to the party or even grilled fish.

The Piedmont Guy, an importer, has one love – Piedmont. This obsession has allowed him to put together a rich group of great Piedmont producers but also to have access to dribs and drabs from those greats that he can craft into his own label – Ercole (Hercules to the rest of us). This Cortese based blend has 15% Chardonnay and 5% Sauvignon Blanc to add to the texture and aromatics and it comes in a liter bottle, so you can enjoy even more of it.

Started by a family from Bordeaux, where their ancestors were making wine in the 1830s. The next generation moved to southern France. Farming was part of their heritage too and by 1972 the family was growing grapes and making wine again. They’ve since built a very modern winery and this Viognier reflects very light yields and very light extraction to make a more delicate style of Viognier, lighter in alcohol and more refreshing.

The Comte Tolosan region encompasses famed wine regions: Jurancon, Cahors and Armagnac. Typically, the white wines are based upon neutral grapes like Ugni Blanc, Colombard, and Folle Blanche, or more aromatic grapes like Petit Manseng or Gros Manseng. While few of these grapes have distinctive personalities, if you put them into a harmonious blend, they can be pretty charming.

Using the grape Petite Arvine is a new project for Maison Ventenac, with the wine called a ‘bastard’ on the label because Petite Arvine is a Swiss grape that few grow in France. The wine is 100% Petite Arvine, tense and minerally, fermented with native yeasts and no sulfur in Italian terracotta amphorae. It adds color, texture and complexity to this otherwise simple, refreshing grape.

Gascony ain't just the Three Muskateers, though they have a place in our hearts as well. More than anything, Gascony is foie gras, delicious plums and apricots, rich dinners with Armagnac to follow. But the white grapes grown here are not just for great brandy, they have always been consumed as wine too and the last decade or so has seen an embrace of clean, cold winemaking to preserve the aromas of otherwise neutral grapes like Ugni Blanc or Folle Blanche. It's also seen new plantings of Sauvignon Blanc, a grape that requires no heroic measures to reveal its aromatic riches. Whats fun here is that these same winemaking methods generate something bright and vibrant but without much resemblance to other such Sauvignon Blancs (I'm looking at you, New Zealand), many of which have begun to seem like self-caricature. This one is comfortably itself, needing only an ice bucket and a big glass.

In 2002 they bought 200 acres in the Blind River sub-region of Marlborough, Sauvignon Blanc’s sweet spot. Lobster Reef represents wines from that spot as well as some from some of their neighbors in Marlborough.
